Some of you may have received an e-mail from Max Lawson, Casey Stengel's great nephew. (The message had a very large distribution list.)

wow. your honoring him by selling off everything that ain't nailed to the walls? i love it when people are so lacking in self-awareness they don't even realize they're total douchebags. And by "i love it", i mean i don't. look, its his crap and if he wants to sell it, then fine. it's his right (presumably). but at least have the decency to be a little embarrassed about it, and be circumspect. try a private auction. don't put your name on this and scream "come and get it!"

Unless the good stuff already sold, most of the items on the site are copies of photographs, not original photos or photos struck from the original negatives. Those photos don't belong in a museum and shouldn't cost significantly more than the printing and processing fees.

What about the signed bank checks? Do those go for face value?

I saw a few items for sale autographed by Stengel. Don't know what's a fair price for those because I'm not into autographs. But they're not museum pieces.

It looks like he's only charging minimal rates (a buck a photo for many of them) and the items are probably reprints, not originals. I don't see any problem with this -- it honors Casey and doesn't try to bilk people.
