yes, fellow geeks, it's that time of year again... I-Con, the convention of science fiction, fact and fantasy that i co-founded on the campus of SUNY/Stony Brook 31 years ago is back for more.

my son is accompanying me on Saturday. I'll be on a few alumni-type panels. Come out and say "hi".

here's an article they published some years ago, about my recollections of the creation of the event, "A Remembrance of Icons Past"

Re: I-Con 31 is here!

little Sage had a grand time. He played in a yugioh tournament (winning, natch), while i spoke on a panel about sequels/prequels/remakes. Then we walked the dealer's room together, where he got a nicely bound volume of the collected HITCHIKER'S GUIDE novels and Dumbledore's elder wand. His eyes lit up on that thing. Then we caught some panels about superheroes and such, went for dinner with friends, a few game-show / trivia-contest type panels, and then home. All on a grey, overcast, windy, rainy (i.e., "icon weather") day, walking among many costumed, silly fellow geeks.

i think i'm doing long term damage to him. but i guess that's what parenting is. no matter what you do, they end up on a couch complaining about it, so i guess you have to show them the stuff that matters to you and let the chips fall where they may.
