Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

Jeez, Pelfrey.

Gets ahead of Nix 1-2 and then throws three fastballs high, not particularly close to the zone.

2-1 through 2. Pelfrey laboring, missing zone with fastballs, floating curves. but hey, the Phillies suck so they can't string together enough bleeders t oscore.

Maybe, but mechanical perfection and consistency isn't just born of the mind.

Meanwhile, stop bunting, world.

Pelfrey hanging in there through five. One run allowed and 87 pitches in.

Meanwhile, Wright gets his average up to .600. .600!

Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

Agreed it's not born of the mind but the mind is necessary to execute once/if the other pieces are in place. There are plenty of examples where athletes of "limited" physical ability produce because of the mind. There are many others where physically "superior" athletes never realize their potential -- generally due to shortcomings north of the shoulders.

Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

Not good.

My issue --- and it's always the same --- is that we signed Pelfrey to be a hoss and then lift him after 99 pitches. Wasn't even due up and double-switched or pinch-hit for or nothing.

Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

Seriously, shmanybody else disappointed by Terry's quick hook on days like today? Do you think he'll let his starters go deeper as the season goes deeper, or does he have Jerry's Disease, believing the Seventh-(Eight-, Ninth)Inning Guy must defend leads in that inning whether he is explicitly needed or not?

Oh, I'm with you. I'm just not convinced it's Jerry's disease. I suspect it may be the overall conventional "wisdom".

Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

I think it was more that Pelfrey was kinda laboring at time and it was the "heart" of the lineup and the 4th time through.

I expected him to come out for the 7th though.

Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

Well, at the time, being the period immediately preceding him being yanked, he was laboring at holding the bench down with his ass, since he was lifted before the start of the inning.

The previous inning? Gave up a leadoff hit and got the next three guys.

Pete Orr flies out softly to left fielder Scott Hairston.

Cole Hamels out on a sacrifice bunt, catcher Mike Nickeas to second baseman Daniel Murphy. Carlos Ruiz to 2nd.

Batter: J. Pierre
PitchSpeedTypeResult
194SinkerCalled strike

Juan Pierre grounds out, pitcher Mike Pelfrey to first baseman Ike Davis.

I don't know. A 12-pitch inning (the platonic ideal of pitches in an inning, according to Ron Darling), the last eight going for strikes, still touching 95. Pierre not getting it past the mound. We should all labor that much.

Yeah, I missed this part of the game, I was napping. But given that sequence I trot his big dumb country ass back out there for another inning.

Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

you're right, it was the fourth he was laboring, not the 5th. (and he didn't have problems in the 6th but then I'm not sure _I'd_ have trouble with those guys) Victorino, Rollins and Pence are the actual hitters there, coming up for the 4th time.

Pelfrey all in all pitched pretty well, grounders and settled in. Pitchers get lifted way to early in general when they seem to 'settle in' late in games.

But Ramon Ramirez didn't even really pitch that badly. got victimized by some blooping and some bad jumps by outfielders. And the wild pitch/passed ball.

Manny Acosta on the other hand.. There's something to be said for treating 1-run deficits like 1-run leads, especially when an offense as good as the Mets have. Bring in Rauch there.

Re: Temporary IGT 4/15

In retrospect it might have been a good idea to yank Pelfrey before he bunted into a DP the inning prior. Not 4 nothing but what irritates me most about Pelfrey isn't his the struggles to put guys away, necessarily, but the fact that he hardly ever helps himself by hitting, bunting, fielding, holding gfuys on, etc etc etc.

That DP was a big mo killer!

indeed. a Wright pickoff too. Think there was something else sloppy in failure toget insurance hits/runs.

Pelfrey has seemingly gotten better with his pickoff move, and hey, he had a double last start. But yeah, that bunt was bad.

This stuff bothers me more than pitch counts. Being able to actually square up a ball for a pitcher and hit it hard can be such a huge advantage. I know it's not "easy" easy, but a couple more swings in the cage a week goes a long way.
