Zito in 2012: 2 Starts, 1-0, 1.13 ERA, 1 complete game shutout, 8 K, 1 BB, 16 IP

Still, the Mets should be capable of slapping him around.

Re: IGT 4/20/2012 SFG @ NYM Zito @ Niese 7:10 pm

6 runs in 5.1 or less would triple Zito's 1.125 ERA.

if they only score five they'd have to do it in 2.1 innings to triple it.

4 runs in 8 or less innings would double it.

If they only score 3, they'd have to chase him in 4 innings to double his ERA.

For his ERA to dip under 1, he only needs 2.1 scoreless innings, but if the Mets score once he'd need to go 11.

As per GKR, the Giants are leading the league in errors (16 in 12 games). So, between this and the .700 team OPS, they're the total package, lineup-wise.

Wright walks, giving us a two-on/one-out sorta stew goin'.

THAT's how you work a LOOGY.

With DP machine Cedeno coming up (and Tejada behind him).. do you consider a safety squeeze here? Hell, with the strong safety Newhouse on third, you've got a shot of knocking it loose even if the throw beats him by three steps.

That's some serious persistence by Thole there to work a hit out on the 9th pitch of the at bat. And Newey going first to third on that, puts the winning run 90 feet from home.

And now, it's all up to... Ronny Cedeno! Aw, hell.

The 9th inning was a battle of over-managing. If the SFG hold on, Terry lost the battle by PH'ing Baxter, a rookie, for Cedeno, a veteran, when all you needed was a fly ball. If that's how little Terry thinks of Cedeno then Cedeno has no business being on the team.

Battle's not over yet.

Hensley for Romo-- unless he REALLY thinks Romo is gassed after facing four batters/throwing ten pitches with a break in the middle-- is questionable; he's a sinker guy, but if he lets one sit up to Ike...

Freaking Bay. What is that, the only time he can't hit a fly ball?

In Bay's defense, the first bad strike call really fucked him up.

Frigging fly ball would have won it in the 9th and tied it in the 10th. Awful.

Welp, we're 7-6.

Need to find some confidence in the middle of our offense.

As long as we're assigning blame, Ike left about 57 runners on today and never got a ball out of the infield in five shots.

Not really in the mood to defend Bay, but he got dicked
on called strike two there and pretty much 'had' to swing
on the third one.

Bobby Scales (switch hitter, utility IF/OF and 34 years old) is killing it in Buffalo. He might do a better job of preserving the bench than Baxter. Might not too, but...

A lot of good things happened yesterday. The win wasn't one of them, sadly, and the team finds themselves behind the eight ball in game two for the first time this year. But I think they're learning a lot about what they can do. The problem is you have to learn faster than your health can hold out.

Francisco is going to be a goofmonster all year, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear whispers of how not being in a save situation affects his effectiveness. I'm not advocating for it, but I wouldn't be shocked if talk of Harvey debuting as a reliever (and potential closer) starts surfacing as well.

Bleah! I sure hope that doesn't happen. Hopefully they'll turn to Rauch or Parnell before that happens.

I've heard it, not in serious 'do this' comments but in the sense of it being an option. Innings limits/big league exposure/etc. whether or not the Mets are 'in it'. Grab some junk innings, probably not as a closer unless they're hopelessly out of it and next year's closer isn't on the team.

If his personal progression is that he's likely ticketed to at least compete for a rotation spot next year, they may want to 'break him in' this year.

Headline in MetsBlog: "Frank Francisco is a different pitcher in non-save situations"

The article goes on the quote the stats which show that he indeed has been a different pitcher so far - and that's all fine except of course for the fact that we're talking all of 3 outings each for both saves and non.
But then it goes on to talk about how Frankie-Frankie "looks different" when it's a non-save outing, and about how the "energy and presence" aren't the same, never questioning which is the cause and which the effect. Personally I haven't seen too many pitchers who look all commanding and stuff out there while giving up hits.

What if he's up, grabbing some junk innings, and doing very well, and the Mets are hopelessly in it, the rotation is stable, but they don't have an effective finisher?

It's a ways off, but sometimes these things happen that way, and it's not so bad if they do.

Re: IGT 4/20/2012 SFG @ NYM Zito @ Niese 7:10 pm

I'd like to see the comparison for closers in save situations that the team has the lead early versus save situations that were created via a comeback in the 8th versus non-save situations that aren't save situations because the team scored in the last half inning to put it out of reach.

i.e. not that it's an 'adrenaline' thing but simply a prep thing.

Harvey: I dunno, it seems unlikely the Mets are 'in it' if they don't have anybody they trust to finish games when September rolls around. But if Harvey helped them close out games into the playoffs, he'd be so hyped this offseason you'd almost want to trade him for Buster Posey AND Tim Lincecum.

Re: IGT 4/20/2012 SFG @ NYM Zito @ Niese 7:10 pm

Plenty of teams remain in playoff contention without a top-tier closer. Plenty of teams persist as contenders after appointing a new closer in the final two months. Happens every day and in every corner of the baseball world.
