Open-source KTE: Giants, 4/20-4/23

"Hey, you. YOU! Yeah, I see you, asshole. Stay away from my calcium supplements."

Catching and batting somewhere in the belly of the Giant order is your 2010 NL Rookie of the Year/2011 Bay Area Ortho Surgery Sophomore of the Year, Gerald Dempsey "Buster" Posey III. He's back at full strength-- .361/.410/.472 over 39 PAs-- and determined to stay that way; Posey will put in as much time at first as Bochy can spare and-- don't tell Razor Teufel-- he is apparently under orders to no longer block the plate, after losing the second half of last year to that nasty collison with pumped-up Aquaman Scott Cousins. Not that it'll matter much to our Weaverian bunch, but he's a poor-man's-Molina behind the dish, with a 36% lifetime CS percentage.

[Prior caddies Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart have moved on-- the latter to the MFYs-- so Posey will be backed by young switch-hitter/Rod Barajas impersonator Hector Enrique "Hector Enrique" Sanchez.

(Throbs) (Swings hard) (Misses)

Sanchez swings a lot-- 20% Ks in the minors-- but doesn't hit a lot of balls hard. A most ingenious paradox! He'll catch Zito, and pinch-hit some, for some reason.]

Who's on first when he isn't?

At 1st is the combo of Brandon Belt and Aubrey Huff

Belt, the 6' 5", 24 y/o (on Friday in fact!) Texas native, was last year's hot rookie when called-up in mid-season but he stumbled to a .225/.306/.412 pace with 57 Ks in just 200 PAs
Off to a similar start this young season [4 for 19 w/1 2B]

Huff also swings from the left side and provides similar occasional pop but with declining stats [6-for-29 so far] since he was a big part of the Giants 2010 WS run. In the last year of a 2-yr deal; looks like $10mil (+ a $2mil buy out) doesn't get you as much as it used to.

Also something named Brett Pill [R/R] has snagged two starts this season which, I believe, sets a record for having three first-basemen with 4-letter last names.

Now what's on second?

Re: Open-source KTE: Giants, 4/20-4/23

Second base is being manned by the quasi-inspiring duo of Emmanuel Burriss and Ryan Theriot, carrying the slack while the Gints wait for Freddy Sanchez' shoulder, and face moles, to heal up enough to get him back on the field next month.

Neither has done much to date, Burriss hitting at a .280 clip (but just a .613 OPS) with 2 runs and Theriot at a paltry .190. That's his batting average, and OBP, and SLG. Yep. Four singles in 21 AB's and 17 outs.

Hey, I hear their SS is an equally big steaming coil of statistics. So what'cha got?

Re: Open-source KTE: Giants, 4/20-4/23

Johnny LeMaster! And is that Duane Kuiper over at second?

No but it can seem that way. Man, has any good team been so divided between the wonderful players that carry them (Posey, their starting pitchers) and the poor players who merely fill roles? That's the makeup of this team, which doesn't mean you can underestimate them. The pitchers have the shit to keep them close against anybody, and if you keep a team close long enough, eventually one of those .196 hitters is going to catch up with you.

This particular .196 hitter is Brandon Crawford. He's OPS-ing at .599 and that's a step up from the .584 he rolled out in 66 games last year. He hasn't hit in the minors since High-A, so this might be what he is. But he's got a game-winning homer already this year, so what I said about them staying close counts. He actually hit a grand salami in his first big league game, so he knows how to do the drama. He sports a frat-boy beard and he's old enough to party.

His defense has been described as "silky." Batting coach Bam-Bam Muelens meanwhile has been working to get him to shorten his "ridiculously long stride." Betcha if we pitch him away, we can get him reaching at the slider.

That's not just some groupie on his back up there, but rather Mrs. Crawford, previously known as UCLA gymnast Jalynne Dantzscher, the kind of woman who make a gullible young man do some stupid stupid shit.

Ahoy there, Brandon! Who do you spy to yer starboard at third. ARrrr!

Re: Open-source KTE: Giants, 4/20-4/23

Shortstop Brandon Crawford (.196/.229/.370) scares nobody. His defense had better be awesome with a bat like that.

Moving back a few positions, I think that too many people don't appreciate that Posey stops being all that special of a hitter if he permanently switches to first base.

I hear their third baseman stops a lot of ground balls simply because he leaves them no room to get through to the outfield...

Beaten to the punch!

Pablo Sandoval is up to his old tricks (.333/.396/.563). Even with him, it's a pretty sorry infield.

Is the outfield any better?

Re: Open-source KTE: Giants, 4/20-4/23

Melky Cabrera (LF) is now on his fourth team in four years. Off to a reasonably hot start: .315/.375/.471

Our old friend Angel Pagan (CF) is not off to a good start: .222/.286/.400. Dropped a ball in center on Monday that started a four-run first inning for the Phillies when Halladay was pitching against them (oops).

Nate Schierholtz (RF) has the best numbers of all of them: .310/.323/.621. Nate has 2 homers and 6 RBIs, although most of that came in one really good day at Coors Field last week. Nate's been a fourth outfielder for the Giants for the last few years but with Burrell, Ross and Rowand all gone now, he's been upgraded to starter.

The pitching is where it's at with the Giants. The Mets hope Lincecum has one more bad start in him to start the season, because he's off to a pretty bad start.(10.54 ERA) Matt Cain may be the one guy you least want to face right now, and the Mets miss him. (1.88 ERA)

Barry Zito is having a good start, but he's not striking anyone out which doesn't bode well for him. He's got a 1.13 ERA and a Complete Game Shut Out. His .688 WHIP is probably not sustainable, and he's only striking out 4.5. He's only walked one guy so far, which also isn't sustainable.

Yeah, considering that Cain has given up 9 hits this year over 24 innings - ** including just 3 in his last 18 ** - I'd say it's a good thing we're missing him.

So who are we getting?

Friday 7:10 PM: Barry Zito (L) [2 starts, 16 IPs, 3 Runs, 2 earned, 10 Hits, 8 Ks, 1 BB] vs Niese
Zito had one great start -- a 4-hit shut-out in Colorado -- and one decent one: 2 earned over 7 innings at home v light-hitting Pitt.

Saturday 1:10 PM: Ryan Vogelsong [1 Start, 6.1 IP, 2 Runs, 4 Hits, 7 Ks, 3 BBs] vs Pelfrey

Sunday 1:10 PM: Tim Lincecum [3 Starts, 13.2 IP, 16 Runs on 22 Hits, 16 Ks, 4 BBs] vs Gee

Monday 7:10 PM: Madison Bumgarner (L) [3 Starts, 17.1 IP, 7 Runs, 18 Hits, 7 Ks, 5 BBs] vs Santana

Re: Open-source KTE: Giants, 4/20-4/23

in the pen, you have one beard missing due to tommy john.
beard:

Replacing him as the closer is Santiago Casilla, who has notched one save up till now a couple days ago against the phils. His SO's haven't been that high, and allows a few more walks/hits than you would generally like from your closer (career 1.4 whip), so hopefully we can make a dent in his pristine ERA this series if it ever comes to a 9th inning comeback.
no beard:

Behind him is Sergio Romo who (being on my fantasy team) should've been the new closer (his beard is a pretty close equivalent of their now injured closer). But alas, Bochy likes him as a setup guy. Historically, his era averages in the 2's, and whip < 1. great k/9 ratios.
beard:

Jeremy Affeldt & Javier Lopez have been their lefties, and while it seems like affeldt is getting a lot more innings, he hasn't been so good, to a tune of 5.4 era and 2.4 whip. in 8 AB's against lefty hitters, he's given up 4 hits. Meanwhile Lopez hasn't allowed a hit yet all year.

Rounding out the pen are righties Clay Hensley, and ex-met Guillermo Mota. Hensley has been pitching much better so far in this young season, while Mota sports a 10.8 era and a 2.4 whip.

This feels like it was scribbled down on a plane. I'm tempted to take this guy down on Twittter for the apathy comment (really?) but don't want to make it seem as though I'm hurt by it. Very douchebaggerly. And he never got to Pagan's real issue here, whatever that was.

Pagan's 'Escape from New York' comes full circle
NEW YORK -- No, Bruce Bochy won’t be able to shake Andres Torres' hand "eight or 10 times every day." Torres won’t be at Citi Field when the Giants and Mets begin their four-game, wraparound series today.

The inspirational little center fielder hurt his calf on opening day and is in Port St. Lucie, Fla., doing his rehab work.

But the man for whom he was traded at the winter meetings, Angel Pagan, will get to reintroduce himself to Mets fans.

Pagan couldn’t be happier with the swap. It really was an escape from New York this offseason for several players, led by Jose Reyes' free-agent defection to the Miami Marlins.

Attendance plummeted, ownership was caught up in the Madoff mess and apathy is at an all-time high -- which is saying something, because this is the Mets we're talking about.

Yet Pagan also said the Mets are "better than people think," and said he is not surprised they are off to an encouraging start.

Pagan's start was less encouraging. He is no stranger to a bad spring and he hit .111 through seven games. There were more than a few cries to sit him in favor of non-roster center fielder Gregor Blanco. But Bochy stuck with Pagan, and was rewarded with a four-game stretch that included seven hits -- three of them triples.

He's already a quarter of the way to the San Francisco-era franchise record, set by Willie Mays (in 1960) and matched by Steve Finley (in 2006). Pagan, a huge Mays fan, pledged to break it, too.

Citi Field is a triples haven as well, but it might play different now that the fences have been moved in.

Here's who he's likely to face: Friday (4:10 p.m. PDT), LHP Jonathan Niese (2-0, 2.13); Saturday (10:10 a.m. PDT), RHP Mike Pelfrey (0-0. 3.09); Sunday (10:10 a.m. PDT), RHP Dillon Gee (1-1, 2.92) and Monday (4:10 p.m. PDT), LHP Johan Santana (0-2, 3.97).

Cat's Twitter handle is @CSNBaggs. I'm not saying I'm going to stuff it with rebuttals or feed it Spam; I'm just saying I wouldn't cry if someone did.

No IGT yet for today's game (and since the Mets won yesterday, it would be a faux pas for me to start one) so I'll post this here:

This Afternoon: Periods of rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 55. North wind between 11 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

It seems very unlikely this game is happening. (It's supposed to SNOW in Buffalo?)

beatees tweeting about it raining and the gates not open to public yet.

apparently the Bobblehead has a patch of dirt on the knee.

Was in the neighborhood, and dropped by to see whether I could exchange a use-in-person voucher burning a hole in my pocket for May tickets. Never did open those gates... OR the ticket office. LOVE that customer service, eh?
