Mets Draft History (Split from MLB Draft (June 4-6))

Fucking up is a bad idea under any circumstances. And 'sides, it'll be two-three years at least before we have a fair notion of whether they've fucked it up, unless somebody pulls a Matz and gets hurt on his way to the bathroom after signing a deal.

Anyhow, the Mets are winning. They had a crap draft in 1969, and even worse in 1986. Winning that same season shouldn't mitigate that too much.

Hey! Here are the Mets best draft classes from their first five drafts, giving them credit for the full careers of guys they signed and developed, but credit for nothing for the McGuires and Clemenses who they may have drafted but ultimately didn't sign. (I've included secondary phases and January phases as well.)

Re: MLB Draft (June 4-6)

Pretty slim for a while there:

1970: Bruce Boisclair (20th round)
1971: Rich Puig (1), Rick Baldwin (9)
1972: Craig Swan (3)

Then it picks up:
1973: Lee Mazzilli (1), Jackson Todd (2)

And then not:
1974: Dwight Bernard (2), John Pacella (4), Bob Myrick (14)
1975: Nobody, unless you count Charlie Lea (15) and John Tudor (21), neither of whom signed

Re: MLB Draft (June 4-6)

In the late seventies, we start to see pieces of the great 1980s teams appear.

1976: Mike Scott (2), Neil Allen (11), Dave Von Ohlen (17), Jody Davis (Jan-3), Kim Seaman (Jan-4)

Scott and Allen, as we know, contributed to the 1986 championship in the form of Danny Heep and Keith Hernandez. Neil Allen was scouted by 1969 champ Ed Charles.

Von Ohlen was a Flushing High product who became a free agent after a couple of years at Tidewater without getting a call. He signed with the Cards and fashioned a 4+-year career for himself. May have even earned a pension if he logged enough DL time.

Davis was traded while in AA for Ray Searage who was traded for Tom Veryzer who was traded for two going-nowhere minor leaguers. Diminishing returns.

Any value the Mets got out of Kim Seaman was by trading him and Tom Grieve for Pete Falcone. But one the face of it, that's a decent haul for a draft, I guess.

But talk about diminishing returns. Check out Greg Harris. Greg F. Harris.
[list][*]June 5, 1974: Drafted by the California Angels in the 10th round of the 1974 amateur draft, but did not sign.[/*:m]
[*]January 9, 1975: Drafted by the New York Mets in the 4th round of the 1975 amateur draft (January Secondary), but did not sign.[/*:m]
[*]January 7, 1976: Drafted by the New York Mets in the 7th round of the 1976 amateur draft (January), but did not sign.[/*:m]
[*]September 17, 1976: Signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent.[/*:m]
[*]February 10, 1982: Traded by the New York Mets with Jim Kern and Alex Trevino to the Cincinnati Reds for George Foster.[/*:m][/list:u]

Gets drafted and says "no" three times, before finally signing as an undrafted free agent with the team he's spurned twice, who then up and trade him. For the purposes of this survey, though, he's worth nothing to the Mets, as he counts as a failed signing.

1977: Wally Backman (1), Mookie Wilson (2), Brent Gaff (6)

Big fun and excitement, right? The Mets third-round pick that year was named "Steve McQueen," too.

1978: Hubie Brooks (1), Brian Giles (3), Mike Fitzgerald (6), Randy Johnson (11), Jamie Nelson (Jan-8)

That's half the bounty for Gary Carter right there. More than half.

Johnson wasn't the HoF-bound pitcher, but a backup infielder with Atlanta, traded there by the Mets for Terry Leach.

1979: Tim Leary (1), Jeff Bettendorf (2), Ron Gardenhire (6), Rusty Tillman (Jan-10)

Leary ended up fashioning a pretty good career.

The team also picked future suit David Howard in this draft.

Know what the next year needs? A little Bowtie, that's what.

1980: Darryl Strawberry (1a), Billy Beane (1b), John Gibbons (1c), Jay Tibbs (2), Mike Davis (4), Ronn Reynolds (5), Jeff Bittiger (7), Lloyd McClendon (8). Rick Ownbey (13)

Tibbs helped net Bruce Berenyi. McClendon went in the Tom Seaver deal. Lots of trades with the Reds around this time. Ownbey, of course, went to St. Louis with Neil Allen for Keith Hernandez. Quite a haul, couting future managers GMs.

Let's rank them in there.

Mets draft History 2

1981: Terry Blocker (1), John Christensen (2), Mark Carreon (8), Lenny Dykstra (13), Randy Milligan (Jan), Herm Winningham (Jan Sec), with a failed Roger Clemens in the 12th.

1982: Dwight Gooden (1), Roger McDowell (3), Barry Lyons (15), Doug Henry (16), Wes Gardner (22, then traded for Ojeda), Randy Myers (June Sec) and a few others; also notable for Floyd Youmans (2, traded for Gary Carter), Tracy Jones (4, didn't sign), Gerald Young (5, traded for Ray Knight), Greg Olson (7, left via FA before making majors), Rafael Palmeiro (8, didn't sign)

A lot of that 1986 team came out of the 1982 draft!

1983: Stan Jefferson (1), Calvin Schiraldi (1), Dave Magadan (2), Rick Aguilera (3), Dave West (4), Marcus Lawton (6), Jeff Innis (13), Jeff McKnight (Jan Sec), plus Matt Williams (27, didn't sign)

1984: Shawn Abner (1), Rich Rodriguez (9), Goose Gozzo (13, traded for Cone), Kevin Elster (Jan), plus John Wetteland (12, didn't sign).

1985: Gregg Jefferies (1) and a bunch of nothing, plus Scott Servais (2, didn't sign)

1986: Fritz Polka (2), Curtis Pride (10), plsu Cal Eldred, John Olerud, Scott Erickson, and Todd Jones, none of whom signed. (Seriously? We only won the World Series that year, kids. Certainly wouldn't want to be part of that organization, right? Dumbasses.)

(And no, I don't know who Fritz Polka is, but I wish he made the majors.)

edit: Added January and Secondary draft folks. Also interesting that they drafted pitcher Jerry Nielsen THREE times:

# January 3, 1985: Drafted by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 1985 amateur draft (January), but did not sign.
# June 3, 1985: Drafted by the New York Mets in the 1st round (16th pick) of the 1985 amateur draft (June Secondary), but did not sign.

# January 14, 1986: Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 1st round (26th pick) of the 1986 amateur draft (January Secondary), but did not sign.
# June 2, 1986: Drafted by the New York Mets in the 8th round of the 1986 amateur draft (June Secondary), but did not sign.
# June 2, 1987: Drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 11th round of the 1987 amateur draft, but did not sign.
# June 1, 1988: Drafted by the New York Yankees in the 18th round of the 1988 amateur draft.

Nielsen pitched about thirty innings for the Yankees and Angels and was out of baseball. Maybe you shoulda started younger, eh, pal?

Ballpark organists would've had a field day with Fritz Polka.

So, adding 1981-1986 into the ranking (and please dispute me where I'm wrong --- this is guesswork), we've got:
