The Weekly Frayed: ATNTMTM

ATNTMTM = All the News that Matters to Me
aka: a general round-up of semi-interesting shit that's going on.

* BoSox won six straight to crawl back to .500 before losing this afternoon. All this started the day following that debacle against the Yanx.
The thing is they pretty much have to take advantage now during this relatively weak spot in their schedule. They just fattened up on the Twins & ChiSox and have Oakland, Baltimore, KC, Cleveland & Seattle coming up before things turn messy again.
Crawford's going to miss at least half the season, Ellsbury is nowhere near coming back, and their pitching is still a mess. But if they kick ass now, who knows, maybe they can get to 85 wins by early September after 4-10 just like they did last year. Then they can worry about not collapsing down the stretch.

* I don't want to say that the Pirates have decent pitching coupled with pathetic hitting, but when they lost to the Braves Friday night 6-1 in what was their 19th game of the season, it was the first game of the season for them where [u:1fdgs3tb]either team notched over five runs[/u:1fdgs3tb]. They've since started a new streak by winning 4-2 on Saturday then losing 4-3 today.

* It's not just Pujols
He's obviously the most notable guy with 0 HRs so far this season. Other noted power hitters wearing the bagel are Giancarlo Stanton, Mark Reynolds & Alphonso Soriano, while the likes of Robinson Cano & Joey Votto have 1 each.

* Now that the Angels have released Bobby Abreu do you suppose Arte Moreno and his mgmt are starting to evaluate just how much cash they've thrown at OFers either thru FA or acquiring other teams' expensive contracts? ... Abreu, Gary Mathews Jr., Vernon Wells, Torii Hunter. Man, that's been an expensive decade of mostly mediocrity (or worse).

* Every time I tune into the middle of a Nats game it's either 0-0 or 1-0
Their last four games have consisted of 17 runs scored - both teams combined! And most of those were late in the game.
Their starters' ERA is around 1.70; the BAA in the .180s; WHiP is under .90

* No Carpenter, no Pujols, a shitty Adam Wainwright, a slow start from both Holliday & Berkman - and yet the Cardinals leading the NL in both Runs Scored/Game and fewest Runs Allowed/Game
It's like every year whatever shit they throw out there suddenly catches fire.

* Paul Konerko now has over 400 career HRs. I wouldn't have known that.
394 of those are with the White Sox where he went in 1999 (in a trade for Mike Cameron). HIs arrival there essentially pushed Frank Thomas into full time DH duty. Thomas had arrived in 1990 and he hit 448 of his 521 HRs for the ChiSox. Then when Thomas left they picked up Jim Thome and he over-lapped with Konerko and produced 148 of his HRs for Chicago from that same 1B/DH spot. That's a lot of fucking HRs (990) from essentially 1-1/2 positions on the field in just over a 20-year span.
I mean to get back before that trio at 1st the last regular guy you find is freakin' Dan Pasqua

I wouldn't have known he was still active.

Umm, yeah, I'm still active bitches -- currently to the tune of 163 ABs; 65 HIts; 24 XBHs; 11 HRs; .399/.476/.681; 211 OPS+ [bold = leads majors]
And this is all coming off a year where he went: .300/.388/.517 w/31 HRs

Gary brought him up during yesterday's telecast, initially just to point out that David was no longer leading the majors in BA, but then went on to add that you'd probably be hard pressed to find a more under-the-radar star, especially one who has spent virtually his entire career on one team and in a major market at that.

Oringinally drafted in the 1st round by the Dodgers in 1994, they dealt him away four years later after parts of two ML seasons and 166 PAs along with reliever Denys Reyes to Cincy for reliever Jeff Shaw. Cincy, in turn, was so pleased with this heist that they gave him 73 PAs before sending him to the ChiSox four months later for Mike Cameron.
Now in his 14th season as a south-sider averaging over 600 PAs/yr (8K+ total with <1,000 as DH) his HR yesterday was his 407th overall and 400th for the Sox.

Has been a FA twice (2005 + 2010) and re-upped with the ChiSox both times. Is signed through 2013 when he'll be 37

Good to see a Pole going so well in Chicago. I remember reading good things of Konerko when he first came up but those early trades damaged his hype.

Ventura 2012.

The thing I like about him is that he's not a huge whiffer. He's probably 50/50 to finish his career on 500 HR at this stage (currently 407). I would say he's an unlikely HOFer, but it would be hard to deny him if he was > 500 jacks.
