Re: What the Hell is Wrong with the World, Part 8

I've got to figure that the parent company of Time (presumably Time Warner, but who knows anymore) has an interest in Showtime, or whichever cable company profits from Claire Danes' new show.

Not hard to see a link between Time Warner and Jeremy Lin. Gross journalistic abuse.

also suspect: No Bieber. I'm pretty sure if he said "I just bought Mets season tickets" they'd sell out every game the rest of the year.

The last time I was influenced by Goodluck Johnathan was --- never. (In case anyone's interested, he's the President of Nigeria.)

Anonymous? Gimmie a break.

Kristen Wiig often influences me to fast-forward through SNL.

The fact that while Bush was in office they choose not to put him on this list one year tells you what you need to know about this list.

No matter what you might think of the person in the office, the sitting President of The United States, or more appropriatley, the Leader of The Free World, should always be on a list of 100 most influential people in a given year.

surely, negative influence is still influence.

I presume this, like most lists not hard-coded in raw statistics, is mostly influenced by popularity.

Again, I'll proffer the notion that affiliation with Time-Warner affiliates is even a better asset.

I mean, where's Justin F. Bieber?

Looks to me that the folks at Time let some of their corporate brethren from People contribute to the list.
I mean who exactly is Viola Davis influencing?

It's not a coincidence that my wife looks like Claire Danes.

As Brian Krakow could no doubt tell you, Claire Danes hasn't been a redhead in many, many moons.

When I saw this thread, I was convinced it would be about this.

wow. if there was a sporcle where you had to match these 100 people with the means by which the might influence me, i'd probably score about a 20%. if i were to do a sporcle where i had to name these 100 people, i might get 10.

Purpose of list: Get people talking about the list, reminding them that Time Magazine still exists.

Effect of list: Get me to resent Time Magazine, making me wish that Time didn't exist.

And again, there certainly was a secondary purpose, and that was to promote the properties of Time's corporate partners by disguising them as newsmakers, and that's just all kinds of lousy.

Justin Bieber impersonator accused of threatening, sexually abusing NJ girl

NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities in Canada have accused a Justin Bieber impersonator of threatening and sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in New Jersey.

He's charged in Canada with luring, manufacturing child pornography and extortion.
It's not clear whether Moir has an attorney.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says 34-year-old Lee Moir of Toronto, Ontario, posed as the pop star on Facebook. Authorities allege he threatened to harm the girl's family to force her to perform sex acts using a video chat site.

Canadian authorities launched a parallel investigation in which an undercover officer posed as a 14-year-old girl. Authorities say Moir engaged the officer in sexual conversations and requested a meeting. Toronto police arrested him when he arrived at a designated location.

Well, as I said, on past "Top 100 Most Influential People In The World" lists they'd put celebs enjoying a bit of Andy Warhol time (a bit harsh for some of the celebs, but that is kind of the folly of calling an entertainer whom is enjoying white hot fame for a time "influential") over a sitting President, so yeah, I'd agree with this point.
