IGT 5/18/2012 NYM @ TOR: International Relations

The Canadian team in the American League gets a visit from a most Metropolitan bunch.

Niese vs. Romero.

Re: IGT 5/18/2012 NYM @ TOR: International Relations

Besides being one hit from second-most in Mets history, David goes to Toronto tied with Mike Piazza for most RBI in interleague games, with 80.

Sometimes it's fun to read the game notes.

Re: IGT 5/18/2012 NYM @ TOR: International Relations

Andres Torres - CF
Justin Turner - 1B
David Wright - 3B
Lucas Duda - DH
Daniel Murphy - 2B
Scott Hairston - LF
Kirk Nieuwenhuis - RF
Rob Johnson - C
Ronny Cedeno - SS

Jonathon Niese - LHP

Don't know what that designation next to Duda's name denotes. Must be some Canadian thing.

Re: IGT 5/18/2012 NYM @ TOR: International Relations

A significant chunk of your 1981 Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff was a supergroup comprised of New York Met washouts:

Jackson Todd 2-7
Mark Bomback 5-5
Juan Berengeuer 2-9
Roy Lee Jackson 1-2, 7 saves
Dale Murray 1-0
Nino Espinosa 0-0

This fascinated me in 1981. It fascinates me now.

The infusion of discarded Mets helped the Jays not at all. They finished seventh in the first half of 1981 and sixth in the second half of that strike-asunder year.

Re: IGT 5/18/2012 NYM @ TOR: International Relations

Doug Linton, a bit player on the 1993 Jays, not in the postseason, was presented a World Series ring before one of the first games of the '94 season when he was a new Met. Gord Ash flew down for a little home plate ceremony, which struck me as one of the classiest things I'd ever heard of.

His rookie teammate, just finding his way alongside a young Carlos Delgado in 1993: Shawn Green. I find it hard to believe Green and Delgado were once young ballplayers.

The first Met who was an ex-Jay: Dyar Miller.

Miller might've had a more-extensive career, but he spent most of his 20s buried in the Oriole system behind.. everybody. Maybe bringing ex-Orioles personnel into the Mets braintrust is what precipitated his arrival in Queens. He gave them 42 innings to the tune of a 1.93 ERA. and then they let him walk.

Don't the umps have the discretion of awarding an extra base on a ground-rule double? If so, they should have right there.

If the Mets drop this game, they will be 0-4 in cities where they arrived dressed up in costumes.

Re: IGT 5/18/2012 NYM @ TOR: International Relations

The generic 'Win Pct' figures from this game
- after 1 inning (3-0 Jays) NYM win chances = 22%
- after 2 innings (5-1) = 14%
- after 3 innings (8-1) = 3%
- after 4 innings (8-1) = 2%
- by the time Rajai Davis hit the 1st of his 2 HRs* in the game with two outs in the 5th the chances had decreased to essentially 0%, a spot they'd stay at for the remainder of the game not even ticking up on account of our 4-run "outburst" in the 8th seeing as how of the decreased number of outs remaining was enough to cancel out the only slightly reduced deficit.

* also the first 2 of his whole season and just the 14th & 15th in the 7-year/1,700 AB ML career for the #9 hitting 31 y/o
