2-out HRs

Been serving up a lot of them lately (just in case you hadn't noticed) and from a variety of sources (we're equal opportunity offenders).

Friday:
Tulowitski - 1st inning - 2-Run (Schwinden)
Hernandez - 7th inning - Grand Slam (Parnell)

Saturday
Fowler - 9th inning - Solo (Francisco)

Sunday:
Helton - 8th inning - Grand Slam (Byrdak)

Monday:
Downs - 6th inning - 2-Run (Dickey)

Those five shots were responsible for thirteen frickin' runs and were more than half of the eight HRs the staff has served up over the last four games; the dual 3-Run bombs during the 5th inning disaster on Friday (0 outs & 1 out) plus Carlos Gonzalez's 1-out/9th inning HR on Sunday being the others.
The only thing that saved this past stretch from a complete Chernobyl was that Frank^2 had a two run lead on Saturday and that Marco Scutaro's 2-out/11th inning shot on Sunday (which I was positive was gone the second he hit it) fell just short.

Re: 2-out HRs

The glass is half full: We're 2-2 in that stretch in spite of it.

Re: 2-out HRs

Here's the team's other problem with HRs ... their timing sucks.
The Mets are being out-homered this season (including tonight's shots) 25-18. Not good obviously but hardly deplorable.

But an overwhelming 11 of those 18 have come with the bases empty despite coming from a team that's been at or near the top in getting base-runners (OBA). Six more came with one runner on base, leaving just one with 2-on and of course no grand slams (I've accepted the fact that we're allergic to those).
On the other side of the ledger, the 25 the NYM staff has served up includes 11 solos, 8 with one-on, 3 with 2-on, and 2 grand slams.

So while the HR edge is a somewhat modest 25-18, the runs scored via those HRs is a lop-sided 44-24

oe: Looked at another way, the 10 HRs the Mets have served up just since Friday have accounted for as many runs as the ones NYM batters have hit all season.

Re: 2-out HRs

Our HR deficit now stands at 27-18 while the runs driven in via HRs gap expands to 49-24

Re: 2-out HRs

- HR gap for the season now at 28-18 and runs via HRs at 51-24

- In the last 9 games we're being out-homered 14-4 with runs off those HRs sitting at 32-6

- Of our "Big" HR-hitters:
Duda has one in the last three weeks
Wright: One in the last three weeks
Davis: none since 15 games ago
and Murphy has the 4th most ABs in MLB this season without a HR (behind Bourne, Pujols, Rollins)

Re: 2-out HRs

I got faith that the homers will come like a great wave. I got more faith than George Michael's fanny.

Re: 2-out HRs

If and when Ike manages to get one past the 2nd baseman, THEN I'll consider contemplating that a wave is en route.

Re: 2-out HRs

Season HR gap now 29-18 -- Runs scored off HRs = 52-24
Last ten games = 15-5 & 33-6

Re: 2-out HRs

I forgot to note that the Mets notched an actual 3R HR two games back - marking only the 2nd HR worth more than two runs this season (as opposed to the seven they've given up)

This (when coupled with Pence's 2R HR last night) brings the Season HR gap to 30-19 and the Runs scored off HRs to 54-27
and going back twelve games it's 16-6 and 35-9

Wow, much better!

Re: 2-out HRs

More importantly, that was also a two-outer that Valdespin hit.

Re: 2-out HRs

The Mets might not have that many home runs with two outs, but I think we've done well enough as a whole in those situations.

Re: 2-out HRs

Two-out HITS we're getting all over the place.

My frustration with the 2-out HRs came mainly from that Colorado series - and then the one in Houston just spun this thread into a tally of our recent debt of HRs in general, particularly those coming and going with men on.

This series straightened things out a wee bit - mainly by tripling our season's output for HRs with more than one guy on base (from 1 to 3) - although the deficit is still pretty large against us.

Re: 2-out HRs

Oh wow! More 2R HRs and more multiple run HRs. Whoda thunk it?!?
But, hey, we did have 2 solos this week!!!!!!!!!

So after a stretch where we actually hit a few w/men on and narrowed the sizable gap a shade, it goes right back to kablooey.
I'm not going to even bother to track it anymore. But Stanton's GS (and who didn't smell that coming!) has pushed our GS hit to given up ratio since the beginning of 2010 to a stunning 3-to-18.
That shouldn't even be possible if you were trying to to see how bad it could get.

Re: 2-out HRs

Speaking of HRs - or the lack thereof - the Mets have had 7.6% of their hits go for HRs this season.
Only the Cubs (7.2%) and Padres (5.3% and are being out-homered overall by Josh Hamilton) have lower, plus the Twins (7.4%) if you count both leagues.

And while I know it seems like the Yanx have about 75% of theirs go over the fence, but it's actually "only" 16.9%. Only Baltimore at 18.6% is higher
Milwaukee, despite the loss of Fielder, tops the NL at 14.7%

Of our "power" hitters:
- Murph has gone 148 PAs this year without one. Emilio Bonafacio (who had just ONE XBH coming into this series prior to his two triples today) plus Reyes & Rollins are the only hitters to have more PAs with a goose egg still in that column.
- Duda has gone 36 PAs since his last one and he has just 2 since the 3rd game of the year
- Nieuwenhuis has gone 89 PAs since his last one

These two-out run-scoring singles are nice, but it's tough to keep counting on them.

Re: 2-out HRs

So how goofy is it that half of our >2R HRs (2 of 4) have come via back-up short-stops?
Valdespin & Cedeno now each have a 3R HR

They're the ones who will get pitched to with men on base.

Re: 2-out HRs

Oh they're pitching to everyone else (except for Sugarpants).
They're not throwing Ike or Duda any fastballs, but they are throwing to them.
