Goodwin, Teufel, and Baserunning

I'm not holding the numbers in front of me, but my observation tells me: [list:rxleqiqu][*:rxleqiqu]We're stealing at under 50%.[/*:m:rxleqiqu] [*:rxleqiqu]We're getting picked off at something like a record rate.[/*:m:rxleqiqu] [*:rxleqiqu]Our baserunners are successfully taking the extra base at a terribly disappointing rate[/*:m:rxleqiqu][/list:u:rxleqiqu] Maybe it's just a self-awareness thing and the coaches and players need to realize that they're not that sort of team. Today had Turner getting caught advancing and Torres picked off. Those lost baserunners (and found outs) could cost us some big games. Already have, I think.

The only break Turner gets from his out at 3rd on Sunday was that there were two outs and making them throw to 3rd in an attempt to get him assured that the run would score. I think it would have scored anyway but I bet that was in his thought process. It seemed as if Nieuwenhuis did [u:3062ukpr]not[/u:3062ukpr] take an extra base on Saturday when he could have and probably should have - although the network feed didn't note it and we never got a second look. The funny part this weekend was watching the DBacks constantly playing tight, pitching-out, throwing-over, and just plain worrying over the NYM running game as if Reyes, Pagan & Beltran were all still here. And then when Ransom finally played back at 3B, Ruben dropped on bunt on them and beat it out easily (albeit while tripping on his face at the end)

Yeah trading an out for a run (or a stronger guarantee of a run) will always have its value, but more generally, there have been diminishing returns on the outs they've given up.

Turner was also in the game cold at that point right? May have cost him a step or two. I think it's still a big of a sample size with the bad running. Not that they're ever going to be great at some of the extra base stuff with the average-sucky speed they have, but they were aggressive in spring training too and it might be time to tone it down a wee bit. They should always be trying to read pitchers and look for tells and stuff, but maybe not be quite as daring.

I'm having trouble finding a good number to confirm/contradict this, but my eyes tell me that we've been having REAL trouble scoring from scoring position on singles... like, to the point where it feels like a 50-50 proposition.
