Re: Current Shortstop Depth

Rube will be evaluated today. The chances are good he will be put on the DL, in which case Valdespin can be recalled. If he doesn't need to be put on the DL, which would be good news in the long term, I guess we see Quintanilla.

Cedeno was supposed to start a rehab assignment today. The plan was to activate him on Friday, but I suppose circumstances may alter that plan.

Cedeno isn't actually even eligible to come off until..Thursday? so might see Q for Rottino in the meantime.

Buzz late last night seemed to be DL for Tejada which I have to imagine means Valdespin starting most games.

In terms of Depth? they did slide Wright over there late in a game last year so I guess he might serve as the emergency guy if they played short today and Turner got hurt.

Quintanilla would need to be added to the 40... which can take place without having to waive anyone as soon as the Mets slide Pelfrey to the 60-man.

One option: Pedro Beato could get transferred to the 60-day DL, and be eligible to come off on June 5. Mejia is just about ready to see game action.

Another option is removing Schwin.

CBS local website wrote:
A team source told the New York Post that Tejada’s MRI results were “not good,” and though not certain, a trip to the disabled list was “very likely.” The 22-year-old was injured while beating out a bunt single in the bottom of the fourth inning, which resulted in a nasty spill over the bag at first.

“The final decision won’t be made until he’s evaluated,” a source told the paper. “Tejada still thinks he can play in a few days.”

Justin Turner replaced Tejada at shortstop, and Mets manager Terry Collins said the infielder could fill in for a time at the position. The Mets planned to bring an extra player to Philadelphia on Monday as insurance in case Tejada needs to go on the DL.

“If they think it’s going to be five, six days, we’ll probably have to make some move,” said Collins.

Tejada is batting .305 with 10 doubles and eight RBIs in his first year as a full-time starter.

Re: Current Shortstop Depth

Quintanilla was a 1st round pick by Oakland, who has had a very good minor league career as a SS. He has not been productive in various opportunities with the Rockies, but at 31, having another good AAA season, seems absolutely the person best suited to fill the slot if Rube goes on the DL. I'm not sanguine about using Valdespin there, with his much more limited experience at the position and his long-term potential at other positions. I don't think there is much doubt that Quints is a steadier fielder, and he's even put up a better career OPS in the minors, and while it's entirely possible that Quints may ultimately prove to be no more than a AAAA-type player, I don't get the rationale for Valdy being anointed the likely replacement, since he's never proven anything.

Re: Current Shortstop Depth

I didn't get the rational for Valdespin being brought up in the first place, but it seems like we've got 40 man issues and Cedeno probably taking over on Friday anyway so Quintanilla probably doesn't add enough to add him to the roster.

The rationale for Valdespinmeister has going for him is 40-man-rosteriness.

Re: Current Shortstop Depth

i understand the roster problem (though you mentioned some obvious workarounds), and if Cedeno's return is imminent, it probably doesn't matter much. I just think there is no good BASEBALL reason for using guys like Turner or Valdespin at SS, even short term, when there is a way to get an experienced SS like Quints onto the active roster without losing anybody (e.g., Beato to 60day dl), and if Cedeno isn't really ready to come back just yet, they should get Quints up as soon as possible.

Ceetar

Re: Current Shortstop Depth

Yes but Quintanilla would have to be sent down again. unlikely he's sticking. That may be more the issue than moving around players to find room for him.

He's hitting well this year about an .804 OPS in the Pacific Coast League..well.. a wee bit below the PCL average last year. That's in 300 games. Valdespin barely has 300 AB and has a much higher upside.

I'll just guess that they have baseball reasons for not choosing to put Beato on the 60-Day, though I may disagree.

Re: Current Shortstop Depth

Not using a guy because you're afraid you might lose him two weeks later would seem to be a losing strategy. Especially if he may become your first stringer the moment he shows up. If he plays well, he looks to stay. If he plays ill, he's unlikely to be lost. If he is lost, se la vie, but they needed him.

Anyhow, Valdespin showed why he's the man tonight.

Neither would be missed, even if they were claimed.

Re: Current Shortstop Depth

Satin's still borderline a prospect or whatever. youngish. Not exactly expecting much from him but trying to avoid just losing guys like that. Of course, they jettisoned a similar "probably not going to make it but still young" case in F-Mart for the likes of D.J. Carrasco.

Don't they still have a spot open or did Egbert take it? Acosta will be one spot, but the Mets don't have a ton of flexibility, especially if you want to consider the option of Harvey being added late in the year. Johnson/Nickeas could be another spot depending on how many days away Thole is.

I imagine it's going to be Valdespin up though.

Cedeno's only day-to-day (may even be available for Tuesday) so it's not like we have to jump through hoops to get two SS in here.
Even if Wright has to start there for one game and then be the only back-up for a week until Tejada returns that wouldn't be the worst thing.

We didn't dump him so much as return him to the Blue Jays for a nominal rule-fiver-who-can't-stick fee.

The Jays immediately traded him to the Rockies, who flipped him at the end of last season to the Red Sox. The Sox released him at the start of this season, and the Mets signed him to a minor league deal a few weeks later around the time of Cedeño's first injury.

Re: Current Shortstop Depth

Qunitanilla, btw, was the 5th different starting SS this season [Tejada with 27 starts; Cedeno = 16; Turner = 5; with OQ & JV at one each prior to tonight] tying that position with 1B for [u:1c44vvfi]2nd most[/u:1c44vvfi] in the musical chairs competition.
Only LF with six different starters [Bay, 14 starts; Hairston - tonight will be his 13th; Nieuwenhuis = 12; Baxter = 9; Rottino = 2; and Valdespin = 1] has had more, but, really, LF is probably the position most likely to see the least stability for most teams in most years I would think. Not so good to see that kind of turnover at SS.
