As of this morning, assuming Tejada is unavailable.

Omar Quintanilla?
|
Edgy MD May 07 2012 07:27 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Has he been added? With that gallery of options, it would seem inevitable.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket May 07 2012 07:29 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
If Tejada is out more than a day or two Qunitanilla will be here faster than you can say 'Wilson Delgado'
|
smg58 May 07 2012 07:34 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Rube will be evaluated today. The chances are good he will be put on the DL, in which case Valdespin can be recalled. If he doesn't need to be put on the DL, which would be good news in the long term, I guess we see Quintanilla.

Ceetar May 07 2012 07:39 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |

Cedeno isn't actually even eligible to come off until..Thursday? so might see Q for Rottino in the meantime. Buzz late last night seemed to be DL for Tejada which I have to imagine means Valdespin starting most games. In terms of Depth? they did slide Wright over there late in a game last year so I guess he might serve as the emergency guy if they played short today and Turner got hurt.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 07 2012 10:33 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Quintanilla would need to be added to the 40... which can take place without having to waive anyone as soon as the Mets slide Pelfrey to the 60-man.
|
Edgy MD May 07 2012 10:35 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Pelfrey was slud onto the 60-man to add Rottino.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 07 2012 10:36 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Fartnuggets. Acosta, then? Carrasco?
|
Edgy MD May 07 2012 10:42 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
One option: Pedro Beato could get transferred to the 60-day DL, and be eligible to come off on June 5. Mejia is just about ready to see game action.

This move befuddles me. What is Rottino bringing that was worth adding him?

Edgy MD May 07 2012 11:49 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
It wasn't an issue until now.

See! He's doing a FINE job replacing Reyes!
|
Vic Sage May 07 2012 12:24 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Quintanilla was a 1st round pick by Oakland, who has had a very good minor league career as a SS. He has not been productive in various opportunities with the Rockies, but at 31, having another good AAA season, seems absolutely the person best suited to fill the slot if Rube goes on the DL. I'm not sanguine about using Valdespin there, with his much more limited experience at the position and his long-term potential at other positions. I don't think there is much doubt that Quints is a steadier fielder, and he's even put up a better career OPS in the minors, and while it's entirely possible that Quints may ultimately prove to be no more than a AAAA-type player, I don't get the rationale for Valdy being anointed the likely replacement, since he's never proven anything.

John Cougar Lunchbucket May 07 2012 12:26 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Vic Sage, as he frequently but not always is, is right.
|
Vic Sage May 07 2012 12:28 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
who did i used to say that about?
|
Ceetar May 07 2012 12:28 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
I didn't get the rational for Valdespin being brought up in the first place, but it seems like we've got 40 man issues and Cedeno probably taking over on Friday anyway so Quintanilla probably doesn't add enough to add him to the roster.
|
Edgy MD May 07 2012 12:29 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
The rationale for Valdespinmeister has going for him is 40-man-rosteriness.
|
Vic Sage May 07 2012 12:35 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
i understand the roster problem (though you mentioned some obvious workarounds), and if Cedeno's return is imminent, it probably doesn't matter much. I just think there is no good BASEBALL reason for using guys like Turner or Valdespin at SS, even short term, when there is a way to get an experienced SS like Quints onto the active roster without losing anybody (e.g., Beato to 60day dl), and if Cedeno isn't really ready to come back just yet, they should get Quints up as soon as possible.
|
Ceetar May 07 2012 12:45 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Yes but Quintanilla would have to be sent down again. unlikely he's sticking. That may be more the issue than moving around players to find room for him.
|
Edgy MD May 07 2012 12:55 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
I'll just guess that they have baseball reasons for not choosing to put Beato on the 60-Day, though I may disagree.

As per Guys!:
I think it speaks volumes about the thread topic that we're biding time waiting for Ronny Fucking Cedeno.
|
Ashie62 May 07 2012 05:04 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
I thought he was Zoilo Versalles.
|
Nymr83 May 07 2012 08:28 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Leaving aside 40-man space, is Q out of options? If so he'd be able to refuse the assignment back down and/or could be claimed by another team right?
|
Edgy MD May 07 2012 08:32 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Not using a guy because you're afraid you might lose him two weeks later would seem to be a losing strategy. Especially if he may become your first stringer the moment he shows up. If he plays well, he looks to stay. If he plays ill, he's unlikely to be lost. If he is lost, se la vie, but they needed him.

Vic Sage May 08 2012 07:44 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |

Edgy MD May 26 2012 06:34 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Any word back on Cedeno's condition. Because we're possibly in the same place we were in at the top of this thread:

Ashie62 May 26 2012 06:40 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Leg cramp..should play tomorrow.
|
Ceetar May 26 2012 11:36 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
what's the word on Tejada? he started rehab games yet?
|
Frayed Knot May 27 2012 07:31 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
They're not calling it a "set-back" for Ruben but apparently his progress isn't what they were hoping for and his rehab stint has been delayed.
|
Edgy MD May 27 2012 07:48 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Omar Quintanilla: .280 / .345 / .493 // .839.
|
Edgy MD May 28 2012 12:03 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Umm...
|
Frayed Knot May 28 2012 12:17 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Yo Quintanilla, get to the airport ASAP!
|
Edgy MD May 28 2012 12:33 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
I think they need two infielders. At least until Cedeno is back on the field. They've been faking it too much at shortstop.
|
Frayed Knot May 28 2012 12:34 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
O.Q. is NOT on the 40-man so some dancing will be required to get him up here.
|
Edgy MD May 28 2012 12:41 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Would it be the worst thing in the world if Josh Satin was removed from the roster and exposed?
|
Nymr83 May 28 2012 12:46 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
|
Neither would be missed, even if they were claimed.
|
Ceetar May 28 2012 02:35 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Satin's still borderline a prospect or whatever. youngish. Not exactly expecting much from him but trying to avoid just losing guys like that. Of course, they jettisoned a similar "probably not going to make it but still young" case in F-Mart for the likes of D.J. Carrasco.
|
Edgy MD May 28 2012 03:17 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Like I said, I kind of want two guys capable of playing shortstop.
|
Ashie62 May 28 2012 04:07 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Terry said Quintanilla is injured and they might look to AA.
|
Frayed Knot May 28 2012 04:09 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Cedeno's only day-to-day (may even be available for Tuesday) so it's not like we have to jump through hoops to get two SS in here.
|
Ceetar May 28 2012 05:17 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
|
Tejada's not a straight-line return though, hasn't been able to play the field yet.
|
Edgy MD May 29 2012 07:09 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Supposedly, Wally had a sitdown with Valdespin in the last week. And if Wally Backman needs to tell you to grow up, that's maybe something you should look at.
|
Ceetar May 29 2012 08:11 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Is 'concentration' code for something? Do they think he was pouting after being demoted?
|
Vic Sage May 29 2012 10:04 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Emaus is at AAA? i thought we dumped him.
|
Edgy MD May 29 2012 10:11 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
We didn't dump him so much as return him to the Blue Jays for a nominal rule-fiver-who-can't-stick fee.

Frayed Knot May 30 2012 03:08 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Qunitanilla, btw, was the 5th different starting SS this season [Tejada with 27 starts; Cedeno = 16; Turner = 5; with OQ & JV at one each prior to tonight] tying that position with 1B for [u:1c44vvfi]2nd most[/u:1c44vvfi] in the musical chairs competition.
|
Edgy MD May 30 2012 03:13 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
And yet, we're going .274 / .341 / .368 // .710 at shortstop, which beats José Reyes' .262 / .342 / .338 // .681.
|
Ceetar May 30 2012 03:30 PM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Tejada will workout tomorrow, and if he's fine will go do some rehab games.

John Cougar Lunchbucket Jun 07 2012 09:23 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
Oh, Buff also has Oswaldo Navarro, career .130 hitter in cuppas in Seattle (2006) and Houston (2010) but a solid .260/333/325 in almost 1,000 minor league games, 600 at ss.

The Ducks have a guy, Ray Navarrete, who's lit up Atlantic League pitching the last few years. He's 34, but you throw him in there for a week or so, and you cut him when you don't need him any more.
|
Ceetar Jun 07 2012 09:43 AM Re: Current Shortstop Depth |
still, Sandy has to do something. There's a SS somewhere that's gettable that will be able to hold down the fort.
