Mets giving out this t-shirt on Tuesday.

Says...

Duda-ronomy 28:3

"Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field."

I'm sure this will go over well with religious conservative pundits.

Not that I care what they think, but the Mets should be a little more aware of what will lead to a PR battle.

If the weather looks nice Tuesday, I may try to sneak out to the park.

I kind of like this one - it's clever, and not preachy.

I guess I can be glad that they didn't spell it "Citi."

This is blas(minor)phemous.

Is it? I may not have much of a nose for blasphemy, but this doesn't seem like it would fall into that category. (Is that an actual unaltered biblical quote? I guess I could look it up if I was motivated.)

I know that it's a play on words on Deuteronomy, and while I have no idea who or what Deuteronomy was, unless he was some kind of a god (unlikely in a monotheist religion) I can't see how playing with his (or her, or its) name is blasphemous.

Atheists might be less than crazy about that shirt.

Deuteronomy isn't anyone. it's the book where Moses is getting all the laws of Judiasm from God.

in context, the verse is saying, if you follow all the laws that God's giving you, then, you will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country (or field).
the quote is actually unaltered from the english standard version.

i like it cuz it actually took intelligence to know that reference, and make it all fit so perfectly. phonetically, duda-ronomy is so perfect. city and field is so perfect... just very witty and ... well, perfect.

Re: Do you believe in Duda?

I wonder if/how much say Duda had in all of this. You'd like to think the team cleared it with him first.
He's certainly not the publicity-seeking sort; have no idea if he's at all religious or that whether his religious beliefs/not would affect him giving his OK to this project.

Re: Do you believe in Duda?

I doubt it. I figure it's 50/50 that he doesn't even ever year of it. it's like 350 shirts in the left field landing and the beat guys generally ignore this kind of thing so it's not like he's going to be shown it.

I'm not offended by it (FD: am probably what you'd call a raised-Catholic agnostic-with-atheist-inflections... if you're feeling generous). It's just... odd. From going with Deuteronomy-as-punchline to "blessed in the field" for a man who might as well field without a glove... it's just really, really odd.

So odd, if I happen upon cheap tickets, I'm jumping on 'em.

CF's offended by the shirt and he wants one as evidence, preferably in a medium.
