6.59

6.59. Good if it's the annual return on a mutual fund.
Horrible if it's the ERA for your closer.

Eh, 'searly. I disagree with the whole concept of crowning closers. But I understand that it's not gonna look good to measure them early in the season the day after a blown save. One bad inning can explode an ERA and often does.

Miiami just got in bed with their closer to the tune of $27-33 million and he just recently got his ERA under 10. The AL East has four of five closers on the DL.

Francisco has a history of running hot and cold, which presumably Alderson understood when he signed him. I'm not necessarily enamored of the guy, but he'll have his good stretches too, and 13 innings is hardly sufficient to pass final judgment.

Re: 6.59

See, this thread frames the closer/reliever thing as a problem.

The bullpen's blown 2 in the last week-and-a-half... and been excellent-- EXCELLENT-- in the other 6-7 games (it's the hidden story of the whole "comeback kids" angle everyone's been writing about in the tabloids).

While the blown games are frustrating-- as they always will be-- 75-80% performance out of the pen isn't terrible, and I have a cautious (and, I think, realistic) optimism that it gets at least a little better.
