Jamie Moyer Is...

Besides being the winning pitcher tonight and driving in two runs with an infield single, Jamie Moyer is...

... still, the last playing connection to the 1986 Mets, against whom he went 1-0, 3.74 over three starts and 21.2 innings.

... the only 200-game winner in baseball (now at 269), a club that he's going to have to keep occupied until at least mid-season if it's going to stay alive, as Roy Halladay is stuck at 191 and can't buy a win.

... tweeting under the handle @moyerfoundation

... the only pitcher in baseball history who vaguely remembers seeing himself pitch when he was a kid.

You forget that 'Andy the Rat-Faced Boy' (240) is now active -- at least when he's not busy [crossout]lying[/crossout] err, testifying in federal court.
Jamie does remain, at the moment, the only 200+ game winner who actually has a win in the last 18 months.

I love the fact that I'm not the only person who calls him by that name :)

Jamie Moyer Is ... a Norfolk Tide

That's where Baltimore is currently stashing him following their signing him to a minor league deal.
Gotta hand it to the old fucker, he doesn't give up easily.

I've so much time for his absolute 100% refusal to give up.

Re: Jamie Moyer Is...

It's not a bad signing for any AAA team; a little publicity, a few extra tickets sold. Dollars to donuts he finds himself on a roster somewhere next year, even if it's in an independent league.

Re: Jamie Moyer Is...

I'm sure he's agreeing to a minor league deal with the implication that the O's are seriously considering him for the first available ML opportunity (and with Baltimore that's never far away).
The dude is now 50 years old with like 8 kids ranging from very young to college age (one was even picked in last year's draft), and a huge charity that he and wifey run. There's got to be a point where all that traveling for the next-to-nothing pay and time away from home that minor & indy leagues dish out where he's just going to say "that's enough".

Re: Jamie Moyer Is...

Hoyt Wilhelm was a mere 39 when the O's got rid of him. He went on to pitch in the majors until he was 49. Maybe the O's want to take advantage of Moyer's one more year.

Re: Jamie Moyer Is...

If Moyer is really serious about prolonging his career, maybe it's time to learn the knuckleball. That could keep him going until retirement age.

The guy is a couple of weeks older than me. Me and Stan Jefferson, actually. That's old.

My office mate used to say he was older than his grandpap. Made me feel real good.

Re: Jamie Moyer Is...

Our weekly Jamie Moyer update (this journey is almost becoming fascinating):
Dropped by the O's over the weekend at his request --translation: a promotion wasn't coming in the near future-- he's now hooked on with the Blue Jays for the same minor league and then we'll see deal. The difference here is that the Jays recently had like three pitchers go down with injuries in a very short span so this one may actually work out.

Also dropped this week by Baltimore under similar circumstances: Miguel Tejada
