Edgy MD May 23 2012 07:49 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Good chance we'll see Gorkys Hernandez get his first big league start today, possibly leading off.
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 07:53 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
btw, it's a 12:35 game, not noon ... y'know, just in case anyone was thinking of running over a bunch of pedestrians trying to make it by first pitch.
Ceetar May 23 2012 07:55 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
when Gary first said "Gorkys Hernandez" I though he was saying "Poor Keith Hernandez" like he had to hang out with the Phillie Phantic or something.

Benjamin Grimm May 23 2012 08:07 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Is Gorkys considered a top prospect? I had never heard of him until yesterday.
Edgy MD May 23 2012 08:11 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
To a greater or lesser extent, we're all prospects, my friend.

I had Yorkis Perez flashbacks, shivers.

metirish May 23 2012 08:20 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Don't know why but I would have sworn that Gorkys' was in the Mets system.
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 09:26 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Gorkys was never a top prospect but was one of those very young/very raw prospects in the Braves system who wound up being the main bait when the Pirates dealt Nate McLouth over to Atlanta.
Edgy MD May 23 2012 09:46 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |

He doesn't really go by Niesie, either. PNC does indeed become Gorkys park this afternoon. RBI single by Duda plates Nieuwenhuis in the first. Now it's the bottom second, Mets still up 1-0.

John Cougar Lunchbucket May 23 2012 11:09 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
I don't like Niese bunting for the 2nd out with a guy at 3rd.
Edgy MD May 23 2012 11:13 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
i support that only if the idea is to get the runner home.
John Cougar Lunchbucket May 23 2012 11:17 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Never even entered their minds. It was strictly a ploy to get Johnson to 2nd. The worst that could happen if you try anything else is a DP allowing Baxter to lead off the next inning.
Edgy MD May 23 2012 11:20 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Wright down to .400.
Benjamin Grimm May 23 2012 11:25 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
So far so good for Niese. One walk, one hit, 41 pitches through 3 innings.
Ceetar May 23 2012 11:37 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Yeah, didn't like that. Here's a guy struggling and we can't even trust Niese to put a hard swing on it and hope it finds a hole or they make a mistake? If pitchers are going to solely exist as bunters and an free out in the lineup we might as well just go all-DH. Not asking them to be .300 hitters..but how about half that or it be considered you're hurting the team. (which obviously, you are)
Benjamin Grimm May 23 2012 11:39 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |

No. It's that kind of thinking that spawned the DH in the first place.
Edgy MD May 23 2012 11:47 AM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Three-zip lead. Wright with the big hit.

... or is it something worse?
John Cougar Lunchbucket May 23 2012 12:04 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
This Harrison fellow is quite the little dynamo. He's also the guy who broke up Verlander's no-no last week.
Ceetar May 23 2012 12:06 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Wright back to .401
duan May 23 2012 12:07 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
you letting Niese bat?
Lefty Specialist May 23 2012 12:07 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
In a lineup with no hitters, and with first base open, why are they even pitching to McCutcheon?
Benjamin Grimm May 23 2012 12:07 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
78 pitches through six innings? I'd absolutely let him bat.
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 12:09 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |

Here? -- definitely. It's a different situation from last night.
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 12:11 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Not sure I want to be putting the tying run on base (and a speedy one at that) so early-(ish) in the game.
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 12:16 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
If nothing else, the games during this series in Pittsburgh have been moving right along.
John Cougar Lunchbucket May 23 2012 12:18 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |

Now watch Terry use 5 pitchers to get the next 6 outs.
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 12:19 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Tack on a 6-pitch 1-2-3 inning for Niese and it's on to the 8th.

It is most decidedly so...
Benjamin Grimm May 23 2012 12:28 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
84 pitches through 7 innings. Let him keep going!
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 12:32 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Again no double-switch w/Duda even though he made the last out ... and again a fly-ball single falls in despite seeming to be in the air a long time.
Frayed Knot May 23 2012 12:35 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Niese walks Hernandez and now it'll be Parnell to face McCutcheon w/2-out and 2-on

Nymr83 May 23 2012 12:39 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Walking Gorky there is pretty unforgiveable, but the bullpen stinks and part of me thinks "lock the door and let Niese go"

Ike Davis-- The gift that keeps on giving--good job Parnell.
Edgy MD May 23 2012 12:45 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
Is it a character-building thing? Terry doesn't want to get Duda down on himself by switching him out like gimpy veteran? Because these seem like obvious moves. And if Torres has lost his job --- at least for now --- as starting centerfielder, there isn't much of a role for him if you don't use him as a defensive sub.

Fman99 May 23 2012 07:37 PM Re: IGT, 5/23 vs. PIT: High Noon with Niesie |
I got to listen to a few outs here and there before it got real busy at the workplace. I did catch the radio call of the Duda RBI in the first as well as Wright's later on, so that was a plus.
