IGT: May 29, Ring the Phillies' bell!

metsguyinmichigan
May 29 2012 10:36 AM

I didn't see an IGT started, so I figured my recent activities in Philadelphia might bring us some luck. I brought the Alternate Victory Flag with me on my morning runs through downtown and eluded the National Park Service long enough snap some defiant Mets photos with Philly landmarks.

Tonight, Jermey Hefner goes up against Joe Blanton.

That is one gawky-looking great play by Pence on the Nickeas drive to the bullpen area in right-center. But then, ANYTHING involving Pence kinda feels... prepubescent, doesn't it?

Re: IGT: May 29, Ring the Phillies' bell!

Random note for the rain delay:

During the aftermath of the Hefner homerun, did anyone else notice Ron talk about Joe Blanton hitting a home run in the World Series, and that he was the "first pitcher" to do so?

Obviously that's not quite right, as plenty of other pitchers had done so previously, particularly before the DH. Blanton was, as best as I can tell, the "first NL pitcher to do so in the DH era" which is a pretty arbitrary line to draw for "first."

Love our announcing crew but even they're not perfect.

Re: IGT: May 29, Ring the Phillies' bell!

Atlanta up on the St. Louis Beltrans, 5-4 in the seventh. Miami beating the Nationals by the very Nationalistic score of 2-1 in the eighth inning.

I believe a pitcher hit a WS homer in the first or second year of DH play. An AL pitcher, I think, for the A's.

Now 3-1 Marlins.
Ceshek got out of a bases-loaded one-out situation in the top of the inning (K'd Harper then a Zimmerman GO) with no runs allowed
Hanley then hit the first pitch of the bottom out of sight.

Miami, btw, is an ML best 19-8 in the month of May
Another thing as I check out tonight's in-progress game, is that their stadium is actually somewhat loud! Not sure of the crowd size but they were roaring when they danced out of that jam in the top of the inning then again for the leadoff HR.
On the other hand, the grass there looks like shit.

It beats WPIX cutting to a sitcom rerun imo, and I wouldn't want "Mets Classic Games" or anything like that because who would want to cut out of Game 6 to get back to the rainout? Yearbook is fine, keep it on mute til the game comes back if you really want.

Re: IGT: May 29, Ring the Phillies' bell!

The fun thing is that was exactly what you were hoping for 30 years ago. If they put on an old highlight film during a rain delay, you would be living in hope. If they cut to a Dick Van Dyke rerun in progress, you knew things looked bleak, and there was a good chance that the Sara Lee Kessler would be opening the evening news by telling me I'm an idiot and I oughta go to bed or at least done my homework, because the game was called twenty minutes ago. And now it's too late and you're too tired to do your homework. Idiot.

b-r.com play index says there's only one case of a 9th hitter having two HR in Mets history, but I don't have an account so it won't tell me any more than that.

nevermind, managed to trick it:

Walt Terrell 1983-08-06 against the Cubs. They won 4-1, with Terrell providing all the offense going 2/3 with 2 2-run home runs.

Anyone done it since Gooden and Chico Walker in July 1993?
Which leads me to the question if the pitcher has just hit a home run, and you would like a pitcher like Gooden to stay in the game, why pinch hit for him?

The answer to the question above is that Gooden in 1993 was hardly a sure thing.
