IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

“There were times I felt like, ‘What do I have to do in order to be one of their favorites?’ Fans choose who they want to cheer for. I’m a quiet player. You’re never going to see me out there showing a lot of emotion. I am who I am. When you try to be someone else then you’re being fake to yourself, and I don’t like to do that. I don’t know how it’s going to be [tonight]. They’ll decide if they want to cheer or boo.”

(Quotes taken from this NY Post Story).

Given that I was profoundly disheartened by how the Mets fans treated Jose Reyes upon his return, I would probably be apoplectic tonight except of course that so many fans of this team showed what idiots they were while Beltran was actually here.

Welcome back Carlos. At least a few of us appreciated you for what you were: one of the greatest and most talented players to ever play for this team.

Edit: screwed up the BB Code

I'm not sure why any Mets fan would have a valid reason to boo Carlos Beltran.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

I would never be a dick and blame CB for anything and find it sad that fans do, but at the same time I've also had it with the snarkironic #BlameBeltran joke. You wonder if the tail is wagging the dog at this point.

He wuz what he wuz. Thanks Carlos!

Bonus topic for discussion: Logo on his HOF cap?

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

it's not like he walked out to play for more money elsewhere. he got traded, and we got a good prospect for him.
are people really still cheesed about the Wainwright K? It was a hellacious curveball. get over it. Or that he had the temerity to get injured after setting the record for HRs in a season? Jeezus... he ain't a child molester, folks. He's probably the top CFer in Mets history. Rise and clap, then sit down and shut up.

Only Darryl could be considered a better outfielder in Mets history, and even that's debatable.

--

Beltran's HOF cap: It pretty much has to be the Mets, right? He spent about the same amount of time here as he did in Kansas City but his accomplishments here were clearly greater.

I think he needs a couple more good seasons before he gets there, though. The 300 HRs/300 SBs combination helps, certainly.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

I think the Mets have the edge in the cap thing at this point (assuming, of course , that there will be a plaque to put that cap on) but if he wins an MVP and a couple of World Series with the Cardinals that may change.

Does Kansas City have a shot?

44games 128 PA more with the Mets than the Royals. (which would be the only other cap option barring him spending the next 7 years dominating with the Cardinals) Also has 10 games and 45 PA in the postseason for the Mets though, including a 1.054 OPS in the NLCS. His Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers are all with the Mets. B-R gives him 7.1 more WAR with the Mets than the Royals.

ABs w/KC = 3,134
ABs w/NY = 3,133

Aside from that coincidence, he had predictably better 'young man' stats in KC, namely SBs and 3Bs (that last one is largely park related)
while his 'older player' stats like walks and power were somewhat better with the Mets

are people really still cheesed about the Wainwright K?

Yes!
And then there was the bad first year (first impression stick),
the lack of outward emotion ("He doesn't care!!"),
the injuries - both the ones that took him out of the lineup and the ones he played through (don't underestimate how pissed fans can get about injuries),
that he's Hispanic (especially in the midst of Omar's "push" to remake the team as Los Mets,
and that he was there for the '06 loss and the '07/08 collapses ("He's not a winner!").

oe: Oh yeah, and then there was the part about how hit got 20 hits w/10 HRs and a .400+ BA for the Astros in two post-season series and didn't duplicate that for the Mets (10 hits w/3 HRs, ~ .250) meaning, of course, that he proved he couldn't handle NYC.

the final out, it dropped out on the windup. nothing. then crowd noise. then arms raised.

then there was a lot of silent hopping up and down in my basement. i was right below minimm's bedroom, and he'd just gotten to sleep. he'd done his part today, wearing a mets shirt to day care.

One oddity is that this game didn't have the feel of even an early in-progress no-hitter because of all those early walks and deep counts.
I was aware that the Mets were hitless before I was aware that the Cards still were too.

As soon as the last out was recorded my phone blew up. I'm telling you, baseball is wonderful.

Some part of me always suspected that when it finally happened the Mets would find a way to lose the game. I never thought it would be this great.

Listened to the 6th in the car on the way thanks to XM and I had not realized, until then, that it was a no-no.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

On this night at the opera.

Not that I wasn’t already succumbing to my more lachrymose tendencies, but what opened the floodgates good and wide up in my eyeballs where I couldn’t believe what I was seeing was the SNY camera shot of a mother holding a son of maybe five years old. They were smiling and they were cheering and I realized something about that kid:

If this happens, he won’t have to grow up with this.

To clarify the pronouns, the first “this” was the no-hitter Johan Alexander Santana was closing in on with (I think) one out in the ninth.

The second “this” I seriously doubt I have to specify.

Because it existed like hell for 50 years and two months and it has ceased to exist as of June 1, 2012, the night of the real and true First No-Hitter in New York Mets History.

Of course it’s an upper-case affair. It’s an up-in-lights affair. It’s an above-the-marquee event that will forever front this 51st season of New York Metropolitan baseball. Like Bill Haley & The Comets; like Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods; like Huey Lewis & The News.

Like the First No-Hitter in New York Mets History & The Rest of 2012.

Whatever comes along, the Mets have a pass. 29-133? Oh, that’s not gonna happen, but you know what I mean. Every season in which the playoffs don’t seem particularly possible, I make a little bargain with Whoever might be in a position to do something about it: Give me a no-hitter and I’ll accept anything else that befalls the Mets.

As if I had a choice. As if, for 8,019 games — the vast majority I have witnessed in one form or another — I had something to say about this most holiest of grails eluding our grasp. As if I could have revoked all those miserable clean singles. As if I could have turned Tarzan Joe Wallis around at the players entrance of Wrigley Field. As if I could have told Leron Lee to take off the Fourth of July forty years ago and have himself a leisurely Independence Day. As if I could have convinced Mr. and Mrs. Qualls to do no more than hold hands.

You’re a Mets fan. You don’t really need me to be specific about who and what I’m talking about here, either. Those names — Wallis from 1975, Lee from 1972, Qualls from 1969 — used to mean something to us. Paul Hoover, Kit Pellow, Cole Hamels, Ernie Banks, Wade Boggs, Keith Moreland, Chris Burke…the whole miserable club.

Those names mean nothing now.

The only name that matters now is Johan Santana.

Peaked at the score occasionally because I'm an addict and have a smartphone. Saw Duda's home run and noticed the Cardinals didn't have a hit but noticed Johan's pitch count and mostly dismissed it. Was there for his last start as a mere mortal and knew he'd been dealing and figured this would be just more of that, lifted after 7, great game, love the comeback, etc.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

I've never been one of those who were desperately longing for a no-hitter. Sure, I wanted it to happen, but I also thought that the lack of one was one of those quirks that made the Mets interesting. And if I had heard about the no-hitter after it had ended my reaction probably would have been, "Huh! How about that?"

But I turned the game on in the seventh inning, just as Baxter was being led off the field. (I was so glad that it was a Gary/Keith/Ron game, and not one of those games where Extra Innings only gives me the opposing team's broadcast.) Like all of you, I was considering the pitch count, and I was also wondering if the first Mets no-hitter would be one of those (I assume) less-satisfying combined efforts. I didn't want that.

When Terry went to the mound, I was thinking, "Don't you dare!" But I figure he had no intention at all of taking Santana out of the game. It was theatrics, and nicely done. When Terry turned around and ran back to the dugout, I started to think this was really going to happen.

When Johan batted in the bottom of the 8th, my daughter said, "What if he gets hit by a pitch and hurts his arm?" And I confessed that I had been worrying about the same thing.

That flare up the middle that Murphy and Quintanilla converged on: My heart was in my mouth. I had to rewind and watch it in slow-motion to see who caught it, and even then it wasn't clear, but it was most likely Murphy.

A couple of line drives into the outfield. An instant of tension, then a sigh of relief.

I've seen this play out so many times. Memories of Leron Lee, of all people. One out in the ninth. Two. I'm getting very optimistic, but bracing myself for heartbreak. I'm pacing back and forth in front of the TV like I haven't since, I figure, late 2008. That final swing-and-a-miss (a perfect ending!) and there are tears in my eyes.

Like I said, I never really cared. Until it happened, and it was fantastic!

Johan pounding his heart and pointing to the crowd. In the interview with a totally gobsmacked Kevin Burkhardt, Santana acknowledges how much the fans have wanted this (a nice touch!) and then Justin Turner comes along with a cream pie. (Go away, you fool. This isn't about you.)

It's wonderful to have such a great Mets moment in June, on a day that you weren't anticipating anything. Goosebump moments are usually for October. I'm glad we all were able to experience this.

I hope the collective euphoria lasts for a while. I'm not eager to see us all go back to bickering about who despises the Wilpons more.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

Good posting there, Grimm. I was up all night and the deeper into the night/morning, the more my appreciation for Johan's no-hitter grew. But the Mets lack of a no-hitter until now never bothered me either, and I never clamored for one the way I would for a Met to win MVP, for example. No-hitters are so freakish anyway, that I never considered the lack of one as some sort of black mark on Mets pitching. In fact, if there's any team, especially an expansion team, that shouldn't feel embarrassed about its pitching heritage, its gotta be the Mets.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

I have been sick all week really, with this stupid sore throat/cold/whatever that won't go away and the doctor says isn't an infection so antibiotics aren't gonna do anything. I had even briefly considered not going.

Selfishly, one of my biggest fears was that by choosing to not go to (very many) games this year, I might miss what happened tonight.

To answer a question from before, I don't know if the stadium really did shake but it felt like it might have, just a tiny bit. I was definitely the loudest I had ever heard the park (the only thing comparable was David's game-tying homer at the first ever game at the stadium).

I was so pleasantly surprised to see how everybody in the crowd got it. As said above, to have the Mets fans united again around something positive is so refreshing. I haven't walked out of a game feeling like this since the Mets were last in the playoffs.

The only odd thing - as least as viewed thru TV - was that the ovation for Santana when he came up to bat in the 7th seemed more tepid than one would expect for a pitcher working on a no-hitter. As it turned out, the big 7th inning netted him an 8th inning AB too so the fans had their second chance and, that time, did make the most of it.

I also was among those who also never minded the lack of a No-No.
Not that I wanted it NOT to happen -- I was at the Gooden/Knight game and have lived and died with more than a few of these going back to Jimmy Qualls -- but I was certainly never embarrassed over that particular hole in the resume so to speak and even kind of enjoyed the quirk from time to time.
But it's really cool to finally have one of these come through.

Al Leiter & AJ Burnett were dealt for each other but only after Leiter had already thrown his.

My initial thought was Rick Wise and Steve Carlton but it turns out that Carlton never had one and Wise's was prior to that high-profile swap.

And there's obviously a bunch of names where I have no idea of their trade histories but I'll leave that research up to Tim Kurkjian.

I think the 7th inning might have been too early to go bonkers about it, probably tempered by the "We're not supposed to talk about it right?" thoughts.

The lack of no-hitters was never a black mark, merely a fun piece of Mets lore. The whole count, not tonight boss, etc. This is going to change how we feel when the next guy takes on into the 7th, 8th, etc (unless it's this afternoon) but it's totally worth it.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

Thoughts that hit me overnight and stuck with me as, for the first time, I woke up with a no hitter beside me:

Was that Jim Duquette in the radio booth with Howie? I don't quite know the timbre of his voice yet. I thought Duke was going under the knife, but it sure didn't sound like Lewin or Ed Coleman or Jiggs McDonald or Juan Berroa or anybody. I think we need to stay with Jim until he falters, just like we're staying with the gwreck on the IGTs.

How about Terry resisting the temptation to put Hairston in right (where, to be fair, he made some sucky plays last year) or Valdespin at second? You'd figure that in both cases you'd get more hit-preventing range, if not error-preventing sureness of hands. Is being a defensive replacement in no-hit bid just too much of a shit-your-pants situation that a manager shouldn't ask it of somebody unless he's got Ozzie Smith or Keith Hernandez or somebody on his bench?

If there's a no-hitter going on, and the game isn't sold out, can you just pull up and buy a ticket in the seventh inning?

Is this the day Josh Thole became a man?

Sucks to be one of the guys who got sent down this week.

Double sucks to be Jose Reyes. Tough Titties. You have a hundred million consolation prizes.

Three soft liners/flares in the last innings really seemed to be knucklers --- the one Nieuie, the one to Torres, and the one to Murphy/Quintanilla. But that may have been my heart knuckling. The outfielders also seemed to playing shallow the last two innings. I don't know if that was a function of the batters or maybe they had an understanding that if Santana was going to get beat, he wasn't going to get beat on something soft.

Contrast Baxter's catch with Pedro Martinez's no-hit bid in (I think) Los Angeles when Gerald Williams failed to make a catch because he folded before hitting the wall. BOOOOOOOO, Gerald!

The tiniest part of my mind worries about a letdown start in the twilight game tonight by Dickey. Fuck that part of my mind.

If Wright is coming out of his slump and Duda is smoking hot... if we have talented reinforcements coming into the pen... if we have no less than four impressive pitching prospects banging at the door of the big leagues... can anything stop this team? No, nothing can. Don't tell me otherwise.

Can't believe Ben Grimm cried. Beautiful.

I was never bothered by the no-hitter drought myself, and understand how quirky and random it is. So I'd been in this thing where I sort of secretly wished for the streak to continue especially when guys like Glavine were on the mound.

Lunchpail was getting tucked into bed when I came in and told him, Duda hit a 3-run homer and Santana has a no hitter going... Until then I was convinced this would be one of those games where the Mets wouldn't get a lead big enough for Santana to hold. I also knew he'd thrown 40 pitches by the second inning, so even though my no-hitter gaydar was activated I was very sure it was going to end, or he'd become too gassed, or whatever. I voted "It ends on a hit" in FK's poll.

So it was a mix of shock and elation when he did it. The moment it looked real to me was when the first pitch of the 9th inning went for a fly out. I was like, OK, 130 pitches is realistic now. I'm happy it happened.

Re: IGT - June 1 - Mets v. Cardinals, Beltran Returns

I watched the first seven innings, then listened to the last two on radio with Howie. I have to say all these years watching and the occasional game where a Met pitcher looked like he was going to pitch one, I was always brought back to reality. Then i would ask myself, what were you thinking? They've never gotten one and they never will. But now they do and its great. I never understood how Houston could have such a wealth of no hitters and we have none in the same time span. Well now we do. And we have 2 championships that they don't have. Everything makes sense now.

I'm one of those Met fans that think the sad sack Met fan mentatlity is somewhat endearing. That being said, there's a large part of me thats so sick of that same old Mets shit that is spewed out by the media and MFY shills. I love seeing a true warrior like Johan fight back from the abyss and put away a number one ranked offense. I'd rather see Mike Baxter make a great play to keep a no hitter alive, than watch him miss a popup with clown music playing in the background. I love the fact that Terry Collins makes a statement about expectations when you put on the Mets uniform. Thats the way Gil was. Thats the way its supposed to be. Ronnie and Keith give off that same vibe.

I want to thank the wealth of pitching the Mets have shown me in my fifty years of being a Met fan. Seaver, Koosman, Ryan, Matlack, Swan, Gooden, Darling, Sid, Cone, Saberhagen, Viola, Leiter, BJones, Hampton, Glavine, Pedro, to name a few. And Johan repesenting and getting it done for all those great pitchers from the past that had the stuff but not the breaks.

I always thought the first Mets no-no would come from an unexpected source -- like an Oliver Perez -- on the road and during one of those West Coast night games that start at 10 pm and none of us gets to see it.

This couldn't be more different: Santana, at home, on a healthy Friday night crowd and against the World champs. Awesome.

They had a slew of Santana t-shirts - the kind that are ridiculously expensive at CF - for $4. I passed it up because I generally don't wear gear related to specific players.
