The Twinks designated Jason Marquis --- a pitcher over whom too much Met fan blood has been spilled -- for assignment. I never thought much of him, but neither do I much value letting a guy go for nothing, so perhaps the Mets could look into flipping DJ Carrasco for him, and maybe some cash.

He's 2-4 with a [crossout:rf4y1oez]3[/crossout:rf4y1oez]8.47 ERA and is on a one-year, $3.3 million contract, but he had spent his whole career in the National League, and was more or less successful last season, and the Mets have a rotation slot open.

If not, I think the Mets should trade DJ Carrasco for DJ Cut Creator or DJ Polo.

A 3.47 ERA looks awfully good. It would be the second best ERA in the Mets starting rotation.

Correction: 8.47.

Marquis never struck out that many (5.2 career K/9), and strikes out fewer now (sub-4 over the last two seasons). Do we have the defense to make his stuff look good? (Assuming he keeps it in the park-- he's given up 9 HRs in 7 starts, with five of the turns coming at offensive-depressive Target Field.)

I never trust pitchers who don't get some strikeouts. At least 5-per-9 please.

But you know, the match may be there. Carrasco makes $1.2 million this season.

I mean, I'd rather have him than Carrasco. But then, if I'm Terry/Sandy, I'd rather have daily cockpunches than Carrasco.

Marquis lives in Staten Island and has wanted to be a Met for years. He's not great but he was adjusting to a new league. Maybe finally playing at home will rejuvenate him. If not, he won't cost very much. And he can probably out-hit half of the team.

* and has wanted to be a Met for years -- well, whenever he wasn't wanting to be a Yanqui. Admits (IIRC) to growing up a YLDB but shirley didn't miss a chance to mention the Mets during FA periods

Marquis still makes Staten Island a home base. Plenty of property for newly rich dudes there.

One thing that may have fed into his lousy performance so far this season is that his daughter Reese (left) nearly died from a freak bicycle accident in April.

I'm glad she didn't, and maybe her stabilizing and his being closer to home help get him straightened out. I'm not saying he's the answer, but I certainly consider it if I'm Sandy.

Yeah, can't hurt to look into things.
Was borderline mediocre for the Nats in the first half of last year, then was traded at the deadline and pitched only 11 innings for the DBacks after that so there was probably some health issue.
That the horrid 2012 Twins can't find a spot for him doesn't bode well.
Doesn't turn 34 until August.

Well, if they claim him off waivers there's about $2.5 million to lose. If they trade Carrasco for him, there's about $1.575 million plus Carrasco to lose, along with whatever marginal value he may have provided bouncing between Buffalo and Flushing this year.

Egbert's from SI. that's good enough for me.

and Torres was born in Paterson, NJ which I drive through every day to go to work (and I think has some Jackie Robinson connection but I could be mistaken there. I'd look it up if it wasn't 11:15 at night already)

On 8/18/1946 Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the Minors against the Jersey City Giants at 24,000 seat Roosevelt Stadium.

Maybe thats it. I know he never played in Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson.

Very nice brick stadium in its' day. I have played softball there and it had a "bigtime" feel to it.
