Re: About Jack Egbert

Toby Hyde tellin' it like it is, and letting his conscience be is guide.

A hard pill to swallow if you're Egbert.

What’s he doing putting on a Mets uniform? The simplest answer is that he’s expendable and won’t be wearing it for very long. Friday, the Mets moved Pedro Beato’s rehab assignment to AAA Buffalo. He should be big league ready in a week or two. Actually, it has to be 15 Major League games. He was placed on the teams’ 60-day DL during spring training and will not be eligible to be activated until game #61. At that point, the Mets will need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Egbert would likely be the first casualty.

Also, Jenrry Mejia’s rehab tour will be heading to Buffalo on Friday. The Mets have made perfectly plain that they expect him to relieve in the big leagues in 2012.

Adding Egbert to the 40 and 25-man roster postpones some more difficult decisions by two weeks. However, at some point, the Mets might actually want to bring up a pitcher who can help a bullpen with the worst ERA (5.18) and the third-worst xFIP (3.98) in the National League. Perhaps that’s Beato or Mejia, or Elvin Ramirez or maybe even Spring Training darling Josh Edgin. It’s not actually Jack Egbert.

A reasonable person might wonder why the Mets did not just skip the bridge step, and call up Elvin Ramirez right now. In 10.2 innings in AAA, he’s allowed just three hits and a walk, struck out 12 and has not allowed a run. Those are great numbers, but it’s just 10.2 innings. Add in the fact that he walked seven batters in 13 innings in AA to start the season, and the team might well want to continue to see him refine his control. Also, he pitched Thursday night (like Egbert). Also, if the team were to add Ramirez to the 40-man roster now, barring another injury that necessitated a 60-man DL stint, they would essentially guarantee losing someone off the current 40-man if they re-activated Pedro Beato.

And you know what, if Egbert cannot hack it before Beato is ready, Ramirez is still in AAA.
