Three Cool Cats

Jennry Mejia, Elvin Ramirez, Pedro Beato, and Chris Young. The Mets are desperate, and at least three of these cats are probably going to be added to the roster soon. None count against the 40. Who do you you cut free to make way?

Time to deal somebuddy? Put Bay on the 60? DFA Hef? DFA Carson, Egghead, and Schwinden?

Forget it. That's it, isn't it?

Batista for Young.

Rob Johnson for Ramirez (This is likely happening tomorrow)

Mejia and Beato..I dunno, I could see them holding off a little on these, but a guy like Egbert seems a good candidate.

Of course, other injuries are possible. Rottino could be cut loose too, and likely will be. Young could make one start and then be 60day'd for Mejia for example.

Bay is progressing, Hefner's sorta helped so far. Carson and Schwinden are still a little big in the new/shiny phase of prospect to "well, what can they actually contribute?" and I doubt they'll just be jettisoned so fast.

Re: Three Cool Cats

It's not a lock that Rob Johnson will be the victim of Josh Thole's return. Johnson is a better hitter, Nickeas is a better fielder, neither is fantastic.

Somebody has to be removed from the roster.

I believe Nickeas has options though. So keeping him gives them the flexibility to swap him for someone else (should they suddenly have 40 man room)

but yeah, it's gonna be one or the other for Thole on Friday.

Re: Three Cool Cats

Rubin says that they both have options. Perhaps they will DFA Nickeas. Would anybody want him? If he clears waivers, then he can go to Buffalo. Same thing with Schwinden.

Only one 40-man roster move (for Elvin Ramirez) has to be made before tomorrow's game as Beato and Young will not be activated yet.

More Rubin: "you're talking removing 3 and putting on waivers from group of Egbert, Schwinden, Carson, Nickeas/Johnson, Havens, Lutz, Satin."

Later, Egbert, Schwin, and Nickeas.

I'm ESPN-blocked, but Rubin appears to be reporting that Schwinnie is being de-rosterized.

Chris Schwinden will vacate one of the two roster spots that need to be opened for the promotion of right-handed reliever Elvin Ramirez and activation of catcher Josh Thole from the disabled list, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Schwinden was placed on waivers by the Mets on Thursday, the source said. That maneuver would free a 40-man roster spot for Ramirez.

The 25-year-old Schwinden is 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA in 8 2/3 innings at the major league level this season. He has made three appearances (two starts).

The Mets still will need to free a 25-man roster spot for Thole. Assuming the Mets do not go with three catchers -- which would not seem the likelihood -- Mike Nickeas would appear far more vulnerable than Rob Johnson for a demotion.

He deserved it. I mean, Nickeas does too but I think Johnson effed up more plays at home than you'd expect of a "defensive specialist" and he and Niese appeared to be from different planets in that one game.

Plus with a guy on, down by 1,1 out, late, given 100 bats, Nickeas would hit more homers and into fewer DPs, I'd bet.
