July 8 at the UUFSB: "Ya Gotta Believe"

Our church -- the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook -- hosts a number of lay-led services over the summer as our reverend takes some time off. I led a service last summer, talking about how my mom's alcoholism and death affected my life... and had such an amazing experience, I'm doing it again.

This summer, on the Sunday before the All-Star Game, I'm leading a service I've titled "Ya Gotta Believe":

Is baseball religion? If you don't think so, then you've never watched the late innings of a crucial game with your team down by a run... or watched a grown man cry as the last remnants of a stadium come down... or seen the joy on the face of a six-year-old when aluminum meets ball for the first time. As a lifelong Mets fan, Chris D'Orso has been praying to the baseball gods since 1986; he'll discuss what being a fan means to him as a person, as a husband and father, and how baseball is very much a religious experience.

I'm excited; should be really fun to put together. Still trying to figure out what to include, musically, but I've started re-writing "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request" with a more Metly spirit.

God's gonna punish you when he finds out how much fun you've been having at church.

Better example of the "ya gotta believe" phenomenon -- the 10-run inning in 2000, or the July 4, 1985 game? Tempted to use both.

That 10-run inning in 2000 vs. the Braves was pretty awesome. I'm too young to remember the 1985 game specifically.

likewise. plus the 2000 game was a packed house, so that really added to it.

Do they still play the blues out in Flushing
Whenever baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away
Do the Metises still play
Across the street from the Iron Triangle grounds...

Good to go for tomorrow.

Six and a half pages is a little long, but we'll make it work.
