Take a Walk From The Wild Guy

Hepler came from Covington in V.A.
Looked like he was 12 when he got to Shea

Tall and thin as he could be
A funny looking lefty was he
We said, hey Bill, glad to have you on our side
Hey Hepler, glad to have you on our side

Hepler worked from out of the bullpen
Things would get wild whenever he came in

His best pitch must have been a ball
Cause that was always the umpire’s call
Wes said, Hey Bill, I thought you were on our side
Wes said, Hey Hepler, I thought you were on our side
And all the Mets fans went
Boo boo boo boo boo boo boo boo
Boo boo boo boo boo boo boo boo
Boo boo boo boo boo boo boo boo…

Teams knew Bill was prone to throw the ball away
If they took pitches they’d make him pay

A few walks here and a wild pitch there
New York City’s the place where they’d say
Hey man, take a walk from the wild guy
They’d say, hey man, take a walk from the wild guy

Whenever Wild Bill came into the game
The other team’s plan was always the same

Take balls high, take balls low
They’re wearing walking shoes you know
They said, hey batter, take a walk from the wild guy
They said, hey man, take a walk from the wild guy

Hepler never learned to have control
All those wild pitches took their toll

His career was one year and done
While he was a Met, hope he had some fun
Grant said, hey Bill, take a walk you’re too wild guy
Grant said, hey Hepler, take a walk you’re too wild guy
And all the Met fans said
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo…

Dickshot, fire your best bullet.

Note: Italized lyrics are spoken, not sung.

THE GUY SAID ‘KEVIN BAEZ’

“He’s poetry in motion,”
I said to the guy next to me
As we watched in slow motion
I wondered what Met did I see
And the guy said “Kevin Baez”
The guy said “Kevin Baez!”
And gave me his biography:

Local kid from Bensonhurst…
(Guy said Kevin Baez - Baez!)

“Baez.”

…A good- looking infielder
(Guy said Kevin Baez - Baez!)

“BAEZ!!!”

“Baez!”

Oh, but he’s poetry in motion
Even if he plays part-time
He never hit a home run
Or surpassed the Mendoza Line
The guy said “Kevin Baez”
The guy said… “Kevin Baez!”
And went on chronologically:

After nineteen-ninety-three...
(Guy said Kevin Baez! Baez!)

“Baez.”

...Traded for David Segui!
(Guy said Kevin Baez! Baez!)

“BAEZ!!!”

Ha! He’s poetry in motion
And now he’s bounced around the league
But can’t get a promotion
From Baltimore to Cinc’nati
The guy said “Kevin Baez”
The guy said “Ke-vin Baez”
It’s Triple A psychology

“Good heavens Mr. Baez - you're dutiful!”

I - I don’t believe it!
Here he comes again!
Ten years later, and playing with the Tides again!
All those days and nights
To sow those oats
And can’t get a promotion…
But! --
He’s poetry in motion!
When you’re on L.I. you’ll see
That with the Ducks he’s coachin’
He never gave up on his dream
Oh, THE GUY SAID “KEVIN BAEZ!”
The guy said ... “Kevin Baez”
The guy said Kevin...

Oo-Oo-Oo!
Oo-Oo-Oo!
Oooh!

Tough call, tough call.

Also kills my Scott Strickland idea.

Nov 21 2005 01:36 PM

Two things: One, I'm glad Doc beat me, because he did great work in this round. Two, I know Doc's song is obviously "Walk On The Wild Side," but is JD's "She Blinded Me With Science"?

Edgy DC
Nov 21 2005 01:37 PM

Yup.

Nov 21 2005 01:39 PM

Damn. That's two incredibly creative pieces of work there.

Great songs both of you.

Nov 21 2005 02:14 PM

I'm afraid, when I'm stuck, I'll fall into the habit of waiting until early results come in and then vote for the guy who has fallen behind in order to help perpetuate the contest.. That's not a very honorable way for me to be voting.

sharpie
Nov 21 2005 02:20 PM

I say no checking how it's going until after you vote. But that's just me. I gotta face one of these guys, can't even vote defensively, both are good.

I try not to let the song influence me, but I've always had a soft spot for the song Rockin Doc parodied. Great job both of you.

I'm sure we all have our voting quirks. I don't think I've ever voted for
a Billy Joel song. Not because it wasn't done well, but because he
gets on my nerves.

Now you tell me.

Grover
Nov 21 2005 02:57 PM

Battles raging! Pendulums swinging! Parodists parodying!

Rockin' Doc cuts open up a 4-1 lead!

Dickshot shoots back to a 6-4 advantage!

Doc recovers for a 6-6 tie!

Now Johnny leads by a nose, 7-6!

I need a liedown.

I've got a question for you Grover. You were always the monster that everyone loved. Then that annoying twit Elmo came along and has replaced you. How does that make you feel?

Grover
Nov 21 2005 03:05 PM

Not the time nor place. I'm on a different gig now.

The real monsters now are those two monster seasons Doc and Dick are having.

Yancy Street Gang

Now Doc is up 9-7.

Diamond Dad
Nov 21 2005 03:10 PM
Wow

Very nice. I didn't pick up on the blinded me with science parody until it was stated, which is a problem. Both are tremendously obscure players, which is a credit to both authors.

Nice job, guys.

Zvon
Nov 21 2005 06:41 PM

both hilarious.

You guys make the off season fun and funny.

Grover
Nov 21 2005 10:10 PM

Well, the Doc has passed the seemingly magic 13 votes, but Dick is right. On. His. Heels.

Rightonhisheels!

Fourteen and a half hours to close that two-vote gap. Can Dickshot do it?

Valadius
Nov 21 2005 11:04 PM

Did you vote, Grover? Or are you an impartial observer?

Grover
Nov 21 2005 11:16 PM

It would be... inappropriate.

Inappropriate. I-N-A-.. um, P, P... Ropriate!

Inappropriate.

Dickshot finds his two voters overnight, but one of them abandons him and goes for Docshot.

We have the first race where both candidates have reached 13 votes. One voter going the other way could have swung this to a tie.

Dickshot's best hope is that a Met transaction --- or at least a juicey rumor --- drives traffic here and brings in a few lost voters.

Y'know, I was just thinking about that.
For a while I was heading toward this year's "biggest loser" award - the person who got the most votes (12) in a losing effort. I believe one or two contestants had received 12 votes in contests that ended in a tie. I will gladly hand that award over to the loser of this match.

Dickshot, I asked them to clear the decks for an interview/profile this afternoon, and their answer was "Go ahead, it's Thanksgiving week. Nobody else is working anyhow."

Yay!!!

If we could figure that out, we could package it up and sell it to political candidates.

I doubt it was a Chicago-style "raise the dead" kind of voter turnout.

Wow, what a great contest. I left for a family Thanksgiving around noon on Tuesday. I haven't had internet access until returning home this evening. I wasn't aware of the outcome of the match between JD and I until now. Another tough contest that I feel lucky to have narrowly escaped with a victory.

Sharpie, I will look over the players I have available to me and start to work on something for our match up. I should have something for either Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
