The Sox got Burnett and Lowell on Monday. On Tuesday, the Mets apparently dealt for Carlos Delgado.

How much Hell and high water do you think the Yankees are trying to move at this very moment to get Dontrelle Wills despite him being a cheapie for the Marlins?

Willis and Cabrera aren't going anywhere. Everything else that isn't nailed down could be out the door, though.

Probably.

Funny that the Mets didn't simulataneously move for Castillo, though.

I'm surprised the Yankees have not gotten Juan Pierre to play CF, apparently Cashman is intent on never parting ways with Wang or Cano.

I was thinking that too.

Maybe they wanted to close the "smaller" deal while they could. They can always keep talking to Florida about Castillo.

Who do we have left to trade for Castillo? Anderson Hernandez? Keppinger? I like Castillo a lot...he's only 30 and gets on base all the freakin' time, but if Omar even thinks about moving some of our pitching for Castillo I'll...I'll be really angry and huff around for a while.

Depends on which pitching.

A look back at the Marlins last firesale:

11/11/97: Traded Moises Alou to the Houston Astros. Received a player to be named later, Manuel Barrios, and Oscar Henriquez. The Houston Astros sent Mark J. Johnson (December 16, 1997) to the Florida Marlins to complete the trade.

11/18/97: Traded Robb Nen to the San Francisco Giants. Received Joe Fontenot, Mike Pageler (minors), and Mike Villano (minors).

Traded Devon White to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received Jesus Martinez (minors).

11/20/97: Traded Jeff Conine to the Kansas City Royals. Received Blaine Mull (minors).

Traded Ed Vosberg to the San Diego Padres. Received Chris Clark (minors).

12/15/97: Traded Kevin Brown to the San Diego Padres. Received Derrek Lee, Rafael Medina, and Steve Hoff (minors).

12/18/97: Traded Dennis Cook to the New York Mets. Received Fletcher Bates (minors) and Scott Comer (minors).

12/19/97: Traded Kurt Abbott to the Oakland Athletics. Received Eric Ludwick.

2/6/98: Traded Al Leiter and Ralph Milliard to the New York Mets. Received A.J. Burnett, Jesus Sanchez, and Robert Stratton (minors).

5/14/98: Traded Manuel Barrios, Bobby Bonilla, Jim Eisenreich, Charles Johnson, and Gary Sheffield to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Received Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile

5/22/98: Traded Mike Piazza to the New York Mets. Received Preston Wilson, Ed Yarnall, and Geoff Goetz (minors).

7/4/98: Traded Jay Powell and Scott Makarewicz (minors) to the Houston Astros. Received Ramon Castro.

7/31/98: Traded Todd Zeile to the Texas Rangers. Received Daniel DeYoung (minors) and Jose Santo (minors).

Traded Felix Heredia and Steve Hoff (minors) to the Chicago Cubs. Received Justin Speier, Kevin Orie, and Todd Noel (minors).

Looking at what the Marlins got back, the most significant players were Burnett, Lee, Wilson, and Ramon Castro. Makes you wonder if this firesale will give them better results?

Also makes you think twice before just assuming the success of the always popular 'trade em all for prospects' method of team building.
Not only did most of those trades receive little in return but -- unlike most "dump 'em" strategies -- many of the players traded were dealt at or near the height of their careers and presumably their fetching power: Brown, Alou, Sheffield/Piazza, Nen.

Talk about helping a team in your division.

Future Mets dealt off (not all directly, certainly) in that series: Dennis Cook, Kurt Abbott, Al Leiter, Ralph Milliard, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson (for a minute), Mike Piazza, Todd Zeile (twice), and Felix Heredia.

Hey! Even "Brandon" Looper makes another appearance! I like the little minor league guys. Funny.

How about Joe Girardi? He gets hired to captain a ship but they blow holes in it before it even leaves the dock.

He can't resign as a point of honor because it's his first job and he may never get another shot.

It also seems like the Mets gave up more in that prior firesale than other participants: Preston Wilson and AJ Burnett outshine most of the other names (discount Piazza since he ws only there a brief while)-- Derrek lee for sure, but who else??

This is either a reflection of bad Met GMing or a really deep farm system on our behalf.

Well, we also got more (Piazza and Leiter) than anybody else got who dealt prospects, although in hindsight they got more for Leiter than they did for Piazza.

I'm not sure how they'll fare this time around. Hanley Ramirez is high on "tools" but low on actual performance, and Jacobs and Petit don't have the "tools" and "stuff" that a lot of scouts like but keep performing well.

I guess we know why Mr. Girardi gave some serious thought to the D-Rays job.

I love that Naver Sports stuff, lol.

I think they keep Willis for the gate every 5 days.
They need some kind of draw.
