"Yes, we know that this would give the Mets the "worst" defensive left side of the infield in baseball"

Heals, are you also trying to tell us that if the Mets acquired Soriano, he would be playing third or short?
Please tell us that was errata.

who are "we" and "us"? are you writing this column in conjunction with someone?
i HATE when a writer refers to himself in the plural for no reason (though if "we" does mean more than just you then thats fine)

It's a time-honored (thouugh not nymr-honored) journalistic technique, when writing a column with a continuing title. For one, often the research and the writing are being provided by more than one person, for another, it allows the column to be handed off.from one writer to another. It's used often in gossip columns where more than one peep is bouncing around society getting dish, but it's used in sports also, usually for catch-all columns. The Village Voice's Jockbeat column used it, as does Mets by the Numbers.

It's less convincing, I'll grant, when the byline is a singlular guy's name, rather than an abstraction like "The Reliable Souce" or "Loose Lips" or a collective like "The Village Voice sports staff." It also works with no byline at all, letting the column's continuing title to serve as the signature.

Mark - instead of starting a different thread for each week's column, would you consider an All Purpose Going Nine thread? We have similar threads for Patchy Fogg's shows and for FAFIF, and they have been working out very well.

Thanks :)

My impression has always been that it's the "royal we" and I don't really care for it either, although I use it myself!

It was, and it has been fixed. Thanks.

If that's what you guys would prefer, sure.

The All-Purpose Thread Mafia would like to announce the addition of ScarletKnight to our ranks. Scarlet has a long track record of rule enforcement and command over a staff of shin-kicking minions. A press conference is scheduled for 1:00 tomorrow. Though it's after lunch, we ask that the press corps arrive without food stains.

I hope she doesn't demand my uniform number.
