Love for Omar and the Mets

From today's SF Chronicle

Bruce Jenkins...Three Dot Lounge...

"Omar Minaya is the game's most dynamic desision -maker, and the Mets are burying the storied Yankees in the battle for NY headlines.

Minaya has simply gone crazy, delightfully so, with the Mets formidable resources. He bought in one of the game's great power hitters, Carlos Delgado, then reliever Billy Wagner, who was throwing 100-mph darts for Philadelphia in September. Determined to work a deal with the Red SOx in light of Manny Ramirez's clearly stated desire to be traded Minaya is making a relentless pitch for that potential Hall-of-Famer.

If we were to draw up a pay-to-see list of players right now, it would include Delgado, whose compact swing has been an awe-inspring sight over the years. Wagner would be an automatic, his dominance of left-handed hitters often bordering on the absurd. Third baseman David Wright cemented his spot, in SF last sseason, when he nearly cleared the LF bleachers with a titanic homerum in his first at-bat, then cleverly pushed a situational off-field single the second time around. SS jose reyes, teh first player on a NY team to lead his league in SB since Willie Mays (1957) is pure electricity. Carlos Beltran may have been a disappointment last year, but his five-tool package remains a treasure. Cliff Floyd is second only to Barry Bonds with his left-handed bat speed on inside pitches. And Pedro martinez is absolutely the best show among all starting pitchers in either league."

I don't care about the battle for the back page, and I hope he's neither determined nor relentless regarding Manny Ramirez.

Oh my gosh, I totally have to root for this team! They're awesome!

Seriously, it's refreshing to see the view from outside the NY media cauldron, that not everything the Mets do has to be framed in terms of what might go wrong next. Boy do I hope we live up to Mr. Jenkins' expectations.

(Rickey led AL for NYY in SB 3X, but I'm willing to ignore that in the interest of a good storyline.)

I don't like the battle of the back page slant either, and there was tons of that
on the radio the last couple of weeks. The media still can't cover the Mets without
mentioning the Yanks ... we need to change that ... there's only one way.

It is nice to see nice Mets comments from out of town news, ESPN and a couple
of the other more national outlets on tv and the web have echoed a lot of what is in
that column.

I agree that Omar is sure making the off season an exciting time.

Ive always had a problem in general with the money being thrown around in baseball, the spiraling inflation of salaries that just dont seem to be in scale with what I think players are worth. But it is what it is, in all sports.
If it was logical hocky players would make the most money, cuz they really have the toughest gig.

Its the price of doin business these days, and Im glad the Mets are using thier money and trying to get the most out of it. Going for the best instead of just dealin with one hand and wishin and hopin with the other. Your always still takin a chance, but I like the chances Minaya takes.

Im not really familiar with other baseball G.M.'s (aside from the Skanks and Phils), but I really believe we have one of the top three in the game right now. (#1 to me, of course, cuz he's doin this stuff for the Mets).

And im sure that he will end up being one of the best Met GMs of all time, up there with Frank "Bowtie" Cashen, Johnny "Ol'stogie" Murphy and Steve "Glamourboy" Phillips.

Maybe the best. Kinda early to go there, but he has what it takes, and I noticed this when he was doing Phillips job for him.

Never met the guy but we both attended Newtown High School the same years, from what Ive read. I try using that as a brag with my brothers, but they arent too impressed. Well, maybe the 1st time I told them,....but not the other dozen times after that.

I really wish Minaya the best of success, and with the Mets.
I didnt exactly feel that way when he was GM'n up north.

And I do love the fact the Mets have had most off season back pages and press. I like to read and it bites when theres nothing to read about the Mets. Or a lil blurb and then 2 full pages on the Yanks. Since seasons end the trend has tilted the other way, and I luuuuuuuv it.

My dad's a Newtown grad, from waaay before Omar and you. Recently learned that a blogquaintance of mine went there as well. So many distinguished alumni! Well, you'll have to take my word on my Dad.

The back page business is a Yankcentric contrivance. As my FAFIF partner Jason once put it, who cares if the Mets are on the back page, they're on my front page every day of the year.
