OlerudOwned
Dec 03 2005 08:21 PM

File this under: Bored, Very.
And hopefully its baseball enough for this part of the forum.

Anyway, using this, find the Mets sharing your birthday.

My turnout, Jan. 11:

Jim McAndrew

The Underwhelming Jermaine Allensworth

Danny "Before My Time But Apparently Known As A Really Ugly Dude" Napoleon

Dan Norman

This will soon be followed by "Mets with Similar Social Sec. #s to You" and "Mets who share your PIN number".

I'll play. I already know, before I even look, that Alejandro Pena was born the very same day as me.

Here's my list, I think he's the only one that was a Met...

I share a birthday with Dyar Miller and Toby Borland.

Another way to play this game is to see which Met was born closest to your date of birth.

I was born in 1963, just two days after Edwin Nuñez, whose name came up around here just a few days ago.

I share a birthday with only one Met: Ken Singleton, who also, is probably the best player in bb history with that birthdate (although you could make a case for Jack Graney, who played in the teens and 20s for the Injuns, or maybe Freddy Garcia.

The Mets born closest to my birthdate are Bill Spiers (5 days older) and Dave Lidell (5 days younger).

To my knowledge the athlete born closest our birthdates is Mike Tyson (2 days).

Mets born on my birthday: Kevin Brown (1990 Mets, born exactly one year prior to me in 1966), Tucker Ashford (1983 Mets, born 1954), and Stan Jeferson (1986 Mets, born 1962 in New York).

Other big-league notables born on my birthday:Hall-of-Famer Sam Thompson (1860). Also Lee Smith (1957) and Paul Konerko (1976).

I was born 11 days before Don Florence, and so our lives are linked.

Dec 04 2005 04:51 PM

No, thanks. That was an error. I mistakenly had two pages open. One for my day, and one for today, and included players from both days.

I was born on a chill day in early spring. Frost was still on the mountain grass. The geese had begun re-arriving. Australian destroyers were attached to the US seventh fleet in Viet Nam, as Dr. Martin Luther King protested against that war, his first anti-war march.

Tiddlywinks had completed it's evolution into its modern form. The Mets had just begun their spring training schedule with a young righthander from Southern California named George Feaver.

Jackie Wilson and his drummer and friend Jimmie Smith were arrested in a South Carolina motel on "morals charges." They were aparrently entertaining caucasian women in some capacity.

Ted Kennedy hadn't yet disgraced himself and it was still OK, if somewhat clichéd for an Irish Catholic family to name their fourth child Edward and nickname him Teddy. That didn't last long.

It was in this historical cauldron that I first saw the light in this fallen world.

On the date of my birth, the Rangers blew by the Bruins 4-1 to reach the Stanley Cup finals.

In exhibition baseball, Carl Hubbell led the Giants past the Brooklyn Dodgers. Johnny Dickshot went 0-2 for the Terrymen.

The Yanks lost 3-2 to the New Orleans Pelicans, despite 3 hits, including a triple, by Joe DiMaggio. Almost all the Pelicans had such long names that they were abbrevieated in the box score and I'm not quite sure who they all were, but future major leaguers included Carden Gillenwater and Pete Coscarart. During the game, the PA announcer had to ask three fans to remove their cars from a nearby railroad track so that a train could get by.

Burgess Meredith and Ingrid Bergman opened on Broadway in Liliom (later to become Carousel).

For some reason, I thought in the back of my head that I shared a birthday
with The Say Hey Kid. I was mistaken. I know it's someone famous, but I
can't think of it right now.

Otherwise, slim pickings for 8/27 Mets wise ...

Holy Shizzle, I share a birthday with David "Big Papi" Ortiz!

That completely overwhelms the Mets born on the same date:

Steve Henderson (who hit the walk-off grand slam that got me hooked on the Mets when I was young)

Cal Koonce
Allen Watson

Other non-Mets: Gary Sheffield (Uncle Doc's birthday is 2 days earlier), "Flash" Gordon, "Bionic Fat" Bichette, Jamie Moyer and Gene Mauch.

No Met shares my birthday, June 29, but Harmon Killebrew and Pedro Guererro do.

My daughter, born April 1, shares an April Fool's birthday with Rusty Staub and Willie Montanez.

My wife, born December 15, shares a birthday with Met-busts Mo Vaughn and Art Howe.

seawolf17
Dec 05 2005 02:57 PM

My wife's birthday is much Metlier than mine: she shares with Jeff Duncan, Tony Tarasco, Mike Fyhrie, Juan Samuel, Bruce Boisclair, Doc Medich, Jerry Cram, Del Unser, and almost-Met Todd Van Poppel. That eight has to be some kind of record.

December 9 is indeed the most common Mets birthday, with 8 players born on that date.

December 1 and October 1 come in second with 7.

Six Mets were born mon May 12, December 3, and February 18.

And the following dates have never birthed any Mets:

January 1, 5, 18, 25, 26
February 3, 6, 8, 22, 26, 28
March 3, 6, 14, 15, 18
April 22.
May 8, 18, 22, 26, 30
June 13, 14.
July 20, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28.
September 10.
October 8, 22.
November 19.
December 2, 12, 22.

(Note: I haven't figured in the LoDucas, Delgados, Wagners, etc. This only covers the 771 who have played for the Mets through 2005.)

Speaking of birthdays, today, December 5, is the birthday of the worst "regular" ever to play for the Mets - Al Moran.

Those of you who saw him play would probably agree.
Those of you who didn't, trust me on this one.

Johnny Dickshot
Dec 05 2005 05:22 PM

Tho the record says different, the 1963 Mets were worse than the 1962 Mets. I don't mean to pile on Al Moran, but he was one reason for sure.

You could also argue the 1965 Mets were worse than the 1964 Mets

Edgy DC
Dec 05 2005 05:25 PM

Though it's hard to define "full-timer," I think Phil Linz '68 had as tough a season as anybody who ever led the Mets in appearances at a position.

Johnny Dickshot
Dec 05 2005 06:01 PM

Billy Cowan has to rank up there. Acquired for a decent player (Altman) and the opening day leadoff hitter and centerfielder in '65.

179/205/314

He was Rich Becker before Rich Becker was Rich Becker.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/cowanbi01.shtml

Edgy DC
Dec 05 2005 06:24 PM

Good call, Cowan flew under my radar, as he wasn't one of the three leading outfield apparitions, but, when narrowing it down more specifically, he did lead the team in appearances in center.

Johnny Dickshot
Dec 05 2005 06:35 PM

He was the only one who could play center, really. Had 19 homers the year before and was still young, but just a dreadful swing-and-miss guy and probably flew out an awful lot in Shea vs. getting windblown homers in Wrigley. Look how fucking bad he was!

But at least Phil could provide some comedy relief with his harmonica playing. By comparison, those who saw him play would probably agree that they can't think of one positive thing to say about Moran. (We're not sure about his being kind to his parents, kids and small animals.)

Later

Edgy DC
Dec 05 2005 07:27 PM

Although he wasn't an opening day guy, Jeff Duncan's 2003 (leading all Mets with 52 games in center, despite a .536 OPS in 166 plate appearances) is pretty analagous to Billy Cowan's 1965.

Looks like the only Met to share my birthday is Ray Burris -- whose hair was more interesting than his pitching.

I do share with three hall of famers, including one born in the same county as me.
