4th Annual CPF Charity Gift Exchange

Who's up for it this year?

For those not familiar, it's a gift exchange where participants put their name along with the name of a charity into a cyber hat, and then a random drawing is performed. Once you find out which name and charity you've drawn, you then donate a pre-determined amount to that charity, and the person that drew your name does the same. In past years, we've done $18, and $20 (-ish? how can my memory be this shoddy?).

Respond here with a "yeah" and the name of your charity if you're down for some holiday givin' and we'll go from there.

Peace out, homies.

JG

Edit: 4th Annual. I'm almost certain it is.

I'm going with the American Cancer Society this year. The mothers of two people who have inspired me each fought courageous battles with different types of quickly-spreading cancer. One claimed victory over the disease after multiple bouts. The other, sadly, did not.

https://www.cancer.org/docroot/DON/DON_1_Donate_Online_Now.asp

How much do you guys want to do this year? $18 was a good-luck number in the Jewish faith, if I recall correctly.

Any one else want to get in? Maybe one of the admins can pin this thread up top...

ScarletKnight41
Nov 30 2005 10:25 AM

$18 is chai, or life. Yes, it's good luck in the Jewish tradition. Plus I had a great time last year calling Annie's charity in Houston and explaining the meaning behind this unusual donation amount that I was making <g>

I'm fine with that, but I'll go with any amount that the majority decides.

It's a great charity, but I missed that Diamond Dad had already selected the Jimmy V Foundation as his charity. Thanks for pointing this out to me. Probably best to spread the donations around. There are so many worthy charities out there.

I would like to designate Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind as my charity.

Johnny Dickshot
Dec 10 2005 11:02 PM

Michael Waltrip & his charities are $20 richer. I think I'm the only other one here with any real appreciation for nascar so I'm glad to have contributed.

Those of you who don't know, in addition to being a stock car racer, Waltrip is also a marathoner (odd combo what with all the fume sucking he must do every week). He's raising charity ca$h through his participation in the Vegas Marathon in January.

Come to think of it, there's not many pro athletes who are also marathoners TV hoops analyst Dr. Jack Ramsey who played in the 50s in the NBA (I think) & coached, is the only other who comes to mind.

Just one correction on this - Michael ran the marathon this past January but they are still collecting money via Operation Marathon to make future donations to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. He raised $1 million already for the camp which went towards building a state-of-the-art gym for the kids at the camp. They also donated $50,000 from the charitable fund to the Red Cross for hurricane Katrina relief.

The dogs and cats of the Clinton County SPCA have $20 headed their way. :)

And Seo - MK thanks you for supporting the American Diabetes Association! He was in a school-sponsored Diabetes walk in November, plus there is diabetes in our family, so it's a cause that means something to him.

Is everybody's homework done? If not, I know the pocket book's always a little tighter around this time of year, so get to it when you can. If there's no objections, I think we can unstick this one and get back to our eleven and a half months of selfishness.

Thank you all for doing this again. The first year I brought this up, I did so in three places: My work (a department of a big movie studio), my family, and here. Work just said 'no' and went ahead and did their shitty white elephant junk trade again instead (anyone see "The Office" a couple weeks ago?). My family (who I love tons) said that would be a really sweet idea, but no one showed any real desire to follow up on it and the idea died real quickly. But the CPF's done it with excitement each and every time.

I can go to most any corner of the internet to find hot stove rumor stuff (and sometimes do), but I stick around here because I learn a lot about players and seasons past of my favorite team from really smart and funny peeps, and that makes this place never stale, even if there's a slow posting day.

But you guys are also decent people, too, making donations to charities some of us maybe haven't heard of, or have no personal connection to whatsoever, and with no guarantee that the person you swapped with will actually do their part. But that other person signed up like we all did, to selflessly give just a little, and because of that, I'm always sure everyone does donate their 20 bucks. Because it's the right thing and you all seem like right people.

And that makes you internet strangers pretty high up on my right people list. So thanks again, all.

ScarletKnight41
Dec 27 2005 08:49 AM

Thanks Seo - that was beautiful.

Meanwhile, thanks to you for spearheading the project. Most of us are inclined to do the charitable thing, but finding the energy to organize things during the holiday season is rough. Thank you for making it easy for the rest of us.

Edgy DC
Jan 02 2006 10:48 PM

OK, I made it to the second without turning to coal, but I've sent the V Foundation my check.

I'm stickying this until JG says we're all paid up.

Meanwhile, I made a modest contributiont to the Shane Reardon Memorial Foundation. It seems to me that if any good can come of the sad predicament Jeff has stumbled into, it's the publicity his son's foundation has received. But they have no online presence. So if anybody out there has a webpage design skill set, they'd probably do the family a favor to offer to design a page through which the family can receive electronic donations.

I'll get you started.

The day that bottom photo was taken, Jeff got his tenth save of the young 1988 season.
