Ill start with the two from an earlier story I posted here at the board.

These two were damaged in my adventures in autograph seeking.
The first one I never got signed.

What medium is that? Pencil or charcoal? And what about the color insert of Gooden?

Thanks Yancy.

Portraits are pencil. A mix of different lead types, primarily soft lead.

When it comes to the color parts, Ill use whatever I have, usually a mix of Berol color pencils and colored marker.

Zvon
Nov 29 2005 02:51 PM

The Gooden was touched up in Paint Shop Pro to hide the crease marks.
The Wilson is as is.
These were the two drawings that were in a picture tube when I went to Shea (hoping to get Gooden to sign his) and they were run over by who knows how many cars in the parking lot.
The up side,......I thought they were lost for good, but they were found them after much worry and searching.

This one I messed up the facial expression a lil bit on the big portrait.
Pelli Lindberg, done in memorium in 1985. (so,...........he couldnt sign it)

....and no cooby. I have sold two pieces, and they were commissioned, back in the 80s ( I have may have an old pic of the baseball one), but Im no professional artist. I gave it a go back in the 80s and maybe Ill share that tale with the board someday. Ironically Ive made more money in music that I ever have with my art, and I think Im a much better artist than musician. And I didnt make all that much with the music. Both were outlets for creative expression.
No, sadly Ive been forced to do real work for a living, and this kinda stuff I do for fun.

These works arent for sale and I dont think I could ever part with them.
Ive considered selling copies but you really have to get em printed in the hundreds to get a printing deal.
Full size lithographs are pricey.
Ive never had the spare flow. Not to risk in such an investment back when I was hoping to break into that field, anyway.
But the internet age has changed some things in terms of advertising and reaching people. Exposure........

I havent hand drawn anything worth posting in over ten years.
Ive been into graphic art and animation, and someday Ill post some graphic work or link you to some animation (which I just started trying, using macromediaFlash). Its fun and a kool challange.

Ill post more of this stuff over the winter months.

erry Christmas CPF'rs

This is one of my favorite works.
It commemorates Lenny Dykstra's '86 NL Playoff walk off homer.
Lenny signed the pencil portrait before I added the color work surrounding it.
It cost me $35 for the autograph, and Lenny never even saw the pencil portrait, no less the finished work.
How that happened is a tale that isnt too long but I dont have the time to get into it now.
Im very proud of this one,and I put alot of detail into it, so I will add closeup shots .

Jan 03 2006 06:33 PM

Let me tell you about the Lenny Dykstra autograph on his drawing.
Back in the late 80s, early 90s, whenever I read there was a local baseball card show coming up in the papers, Id try to whip up a drawing of a player available and get it signed. Not just any players though. Only my favorites. I did around a dozen during that time, but for reasons I cant even remember now, only had afew successfully autographed.

I went to a card show to get that in 1993, when Dykstra was with the Phillies.
It cost around $20 for the signature ( I checked this since I posted the drawing and found the actual ad stored away with the CertOfAuth ), and there was a big line you had to wait on.
I only had a weeks notice of the event, and the drawing you see is actually my second effort. I didnt like how the first one was coming out at all, and at some point I decided to start completely over. It was a good decision, because the portrait came out much better. But It didnt give me much time to complete it.

So when I went to the show, all that was complete was the central pencil portrait. And it was still attached to and in the drawing pad.
None of the color work had been done yet.
Id always get this awkward feeling when presenting one of my drawings for an autograph.
The player would usually have something to say.
It was never bad, but I was just nervous enough being there as the fan I was of that player.
And here I was sharing a very personal thing with them, my drawing.

I remember when Glenn Wilson signed his. He was one of my favorite Phils, even though he was always hurting the Mets with his bat in the mid 1980s.
When my turn on line came up I presented it to him (this one wasnt still on the pad, and was finished) and he looked at it and he says:
"Is this for me?"
I didnt know how to respond because it was the last thing I expected to hear. For him?
In my awkwardness I said : " No sir. You get the seven dollars and fifty cents it cost me to wait on this line for your autograph.
That drawing with your signature on it goes home with me."
We looked at each other and then he laughed. I felt real foolish at this point so I added, " Ill be glad to send you a copy."
He said that would be nice, let me give you my address. So I hand him a matchbook and he writes his address on the inner flap.
Just his address.
I used to use matchbooks like that alot, for numbers and names and addresses.
So I wasnt trying to take advantage of him when I said could you please add your name, so Ill know what this is.
He said " Nope,....sorry. That would cost you another seven fifty."
Now it was my turn to laugh. And I did.
I did want to mail him a copy too, but never got around to it and lost the matchbook.
Odds are it probly went into the wash with the jeans I was wearing that day. lol.

So, anyway, I was a bit more nervous about the Dykstra signing because I was a much bigger fan of Lenny.
And this drawing was of him as a Met, and this show was full of Philly fans, and I figured he'd have something to say about that.

But, as I said, the drawing wasnt complete and was still on the pad.
It also wasnt 'fixed", which is to say sprayed with fixatif to preserve it and make sure the pencil work can never be smudged or smeared.
Fixing it at this stage of the drawing would effect the unused portions of paper I planned to do the color sections on.
It would make the paper rough.

So I didnt "fix" it, but I was worried that Dykstra might possibly smear the portrait while signing it.
I used a rather soft lead, and alot of the texure and shadow effect I do in pencil portraits is through the process of soft finger smudging of lightly drawn pencil.
I wanted him to sign in a specific place (I knew exactly how I was going to lay out the color action shots) that would have required him putting his hand and arm on top of the portrait.
So I was worried about this.
And this is what i did.
I took the page of drawing pad paper in front of the Dykstra drawing and cut a hole in it right in the area I wanted him to sign.
The preceeding page on the pad covered and protected the drawing.

Hundreds of people paid their money and were on this line for his autograph.
Now, Lenny was sitting at a long table, and as you approached him there were two or three of "his people" who previewed what it was that you wanted him to sign.
They would approve it ( I didnt see anyone turned away ) and take the info you provided for drawing up a certificate of authenticity.
So these guys all lifted the preceeding page with the hole and looked at the drawing and said "nice work" and "very good" and " what do you want to call this."
The line was moving and you had to answer fast. "Thanks", "Thanks," " Lenny Dykstra 1986 Game Three Playoff Home Run Commemorative Drawing, please."

What the guy actually typed was " Original Artwork- 1986 Playoff Game Winning Homer."
I explained real quick why the drawing was protected by the proceeding page.

Lenny was sitting there like it was an assembly line, and when they approved and processed the item they just slide it down to him and he signed it and slide it past and took on the next item. One after the other. It was all a pretty fast process that Im sure made it possible for him to sign as many as he could in the least amount of time.
So when they slid the pad down, all he saw was a blank page with a hole in it. One of his people told him to just sign inside the hole in the paper.
And he did. And slid it down the table where the certificate guy would give you your typed out CertOf Auth.
He never saw the drawing.
For all he knew, he could have been signing his next MLB contract, lol.

Truth is, I was relieved. I always feel awkward at those times and I just want to get it done and get out a there.
But there is a sense of pride in me that wishes Dykstra had gotten to see it. I was very proud of that portrait.

So, that was in December of '93, and I worked at my liesure on the other parts and drew around his autograph. It was completed in early 1994.

And thats my Lenny Dystra autograped drawing story.
I told ya it would be long. ;)

This one was done as an assignment in Color & Design II, in '78.
Had to draw using color, dots and lines.
If you notice, some of the players depicted are Mets put in different uniforms.
Koos is Koos, Reggie is Reggie, the Reds are the Reds.
I think thats Cecil Cooper up right, and no change there.

Of the remainder, 3 were actually Mets, and 3 are from another team.
Guess who.
The Cardinal making the catch is an obvious one.

The picture sources were from '69 to '78.
Im pretty sure none of the Mets whose uniforms I changed were on the '78 squad.
Ones questionable, and Ill check at UMDB.

Seaver is not the Astro pitcher, but real good guess.

The reason I did this (uniform changing thing) was to create the balance I was looking for.
Not only in form and composition ("the flow"),...also in portraying an equal number of NL and AL players. And of course, color played a part.

I checked UMDB. Nope, all were gone by '78.

Guess again.
I mentioned the Cardinal (top/center red uniform) making the catch.
You know who that is, right?

Rockin' Doc

another good guess, but the 'S' means nothing.
And the pitcher never actually played for the Astros.

Ill give you a hint for that one.
He had a mustache that I didnt include.

heres a breakdown.

Mets whose uniforms were changed:

1)The Cardinal red top center catch (4 images-coooomon, that ones easy)
2) The SF Giant leaping catch left-under Koos. (2 images)
3) The A's fence catch - bottom right

Other MLB'ers whose unis were changed.

1) The Astros pitcher
2) The Orioles diving fielder top left- behind Reggie ( looks like Brooks, but it isnt.)
3) The large Detroit hitter on right. Hint: I added the mustache.

Im really pleasantly surprized you guys have enjoyed this one, cuz it was a school assignment and I just threw it up cause I had a pic.
I also have a rock n roll one that I did, a similar excersize from Color & Design I.

He was a Yankee for part of his career, tho, and he did have a mustache.

And that drawing shares no resemblence to him other that his picture was used as a source. Well, maybe the sideburns.

BINGO!

Good one Doc.
*Z tosses him a Gooden bobblehead doll

Thats because I took the liberty of putting him in an Astro uniform.
Thats what this game is all about.
I changed players uniforms, and you guess who they were before
i did this strange thing to them (for reasons Ive explained).

Now, the guy pictured as a Detroit Tiger below, he never played for Detroit.
But his face is pretty accurate, aside from the fact that I added a mustache.
Who is he? (he was not a Met player)

The Athletics outfielder bottom right did play for the Mets,
and actually made that catch you see depicted in a Met uniform,
at Shea.I put him in that A's uniform. His face was made more generic.
Who's he?

Good guesses, but
nope & nope.

On the Detroit guy, I also added those sideburns.
Clue: He was a player in the N.L.

Clue for the Met player: he was a Met centerfielder, and that catch occurred in the post season.
(and you know what? Im not even 100% positive that he caught that ball. If I rememeber right, he did. That was from a newspaper clipping)

1)The Cardinal red top center catch Tommie Agee
2) The SF Giant leaping catch left-under Koos. (2 images) Bud Harrelson
3) The A's fence catch - bottom right Don Hahn

Other MLB'ers whose unis were changed.

1) The Astros pitcher - Catfish Hunter

3) The large Detroit hitter on right. Hint: I added the mustache.Roberto Clemente

What Im going to show you now came together by accident and then became an excersize/lesson in graphic art for me.

I ended up designing a logo for the CPF. I did this for fun.

The CPF did not request this and is in no way obligated to use it, or the images associated with it.
KC and Edge, if you think the primary logo design in any way puts the CPF in jeopardy of breaking any copyright laws,
please let me know and I will pull them. If there is any trouble or complications, I am the one to be held responsible.

What I learned doing this, in information and layout of fonts alone, was well worth the weeks spare time I put into it.
(btw-the closest font that looks like the NEW YORK on the Mets away uniform that I have found so far is called Saloon Girl.
The site where I found it wants $20 bucks for it so....... I didnt use that font.
I am still searching for it but in the mean time Ive settled for the font you see with afew custom alterations made to it.)

Thank you SK.
I really dont expect it to be used here, as Ive told KC and Edgy.
I did it for fun, and aside from looking at fonts for hours it was.
I did learn alot about and downloaded many new and kool fonts.
The logo itself came together inside of an hour one afternoon...the one when the CPF was down last week.

If there are legal issues the logo design still can make a nice personal wallpaper for your PC.

SwitchHitter

IANAL, but I would think it's a derivative work and so there shouldn't be legal issues.

ScarletKnight41
Feb 13 2006 09:50 AM

The logo with the skyline background could arguably have a problem, because the Mets own that image. But nobody is using it for profit, so IMHO the worst that anyone could do would be to ask us to cease and desist from using it anymore.

The generic image is very safe. There's nothing that screams out Mets from that one.

Edgy DC
Apr 08 2006 10:34 PM

Help me out. The diving firstbaseman seems to be wearing 13. But that was Mazzilli's number in 1986, and the guy looks fair-haired. Plus he's a lefthanded thrower, and Mazzilli --- despite his reptuted ambidexterity, and the presumed advantage of a lefthanded-throwing firstbaseman --- threw righthanded and wore the glove on his left.

Is it... Tim Corcoran?

Zvon
Apr 08 2006 10:57 PM

The portrait next to him is certainly supposed to be Mazz, but it didnt end up looking like him at all.
The diving guy is supposed to be Mazz too, but i may have used a pic of another Met and just put Mazz's number on that uni ( I used to do stuff like that when i couldnt find the pic i wanted)

Bottomline I tought that image there fit the flow of the composition best.

That dont mean I didnt screw up too, lol.

Damn.

Yep, lets call him a composite Lee Heep, or Danny Mazzilli.

I looked but could not find any flashpage.
Im curious as to what artwork you saw there.

I did do a Seaver piece back in the 90's that was unfortunately lost to me.

It was pencil and colored pencil, a mix kind of like the 86 Met tribute.
Mostly color work.
A pencil portrait and a series of colored pencil action shots of his wind up, the uniform changing to each team he played with.
If i remember right it was:
3 on Mets, 2 on Cincy,1 Mets, 2 on WhiteSox,1 Boston.

I used the uni concept on this card as well.

I would love to know if that drawing still exists somewhere.
It was incomplete.

The less-than-obvious brilliance of the Z-work on the avatars is that the image padding can't just fade into the background (unless he wants to do some sort of transparent giffery there) because our posts alternate two different backgrounds. So Z had the background on the avatars fade from one gray to the other going left to right. Gergeous.

Oh, and speaking of the Cat, one of the cool things you can easily do with iTunes is build a soundtrack album for a film that never released one. I did with all of Cat's songs from Harold and Maude:

1) "Don't Be Shy" from Footsteps in the Dark - Greatest Hits, Vol. 2
2) "Tea for the Tillerman"from Tea for the Tillerman
3) "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" from Footsteps in the Dark - Greatest Hits, Vol. 2
4) "Where Do the Children Play?" from Footsteps in the Dark - Greatest Hits, Vol. 2
5) "Trouble" from Mona Bone Jakon
6) "On the Road to Find Out" from Footsteps in the Dark - Greatest Hits, Vol. 2
7) "I Wish, I Wish" from Mona Bone Jakon
8) "I Think I See the Light" from Mona Bone Jakon
9) "Miles from Nowhere" from Tea for the Tillerman

Many of those songs were on my list to do. Many I have already recorded versions of, though none in presentable form (I have mono cassette recordings of old live gigs.
Yea, I'd throw in Cat song here or there and always got a positive response. People remembered these songs, and the younger kids knew them from somewhere or other.
Probably from their parents playing the records or movie soundtracks.
When I played "On the Road to Find Out" one gig, you can hear some drunk in the bar yell out "Harold And Maude, man! Harold And Maude!" lol.)

I loved that movie Harold And Maude, and I believe I must have seen it around the time I was first getting into Cats music.
I saw it during its theatrical release and "Tea For The Tillerman" was the LP that first introduced me to Cat.
Early 70's.
Damn, I loved that album and I thought, these songs sound simple enough for me to play.
So I decided, well, I'm gonna have to learn how to play guitar then, lol.
And I did.

The songs were such that they could could be played well by a beginner, and as you learned your way around a guitar, they could be reproduced even better.
When I played out (during the 90's) I was known as "the guy who plays the Dave Matthews stuff", and that was fun. And in demand on the local curcuit.
But I always wanted to build a show around Cats songs. I needed at least one more musician involved to make it work like I envisioned.
I always did at least a duet thing with the Matthews stuff, like he and Tim Reynolds, and never had a problem getting other musicians involved in that,
but when I tried to do Cat I never could get anyone that interested. Nor could I find a place that would have been interested in having me play full sets of Cats songs.
I thought that this was ashame and moved on to whatever it was that I did next.

Every few years I kind of rediscover music I always loved, and I went thru that Cat phase a year or so ago.
Time to dust off that old acoustic :)

You could say Cat had a few separate careers.
Before he wrote the music that he became known for in the states he was a British teen pop star. His music had this BIG production type sound to it.
I have heard most of the stuff he did in those days and Its not my cup of tea. Thats saying it nicely, lol. I hated the stuff.
First Cut Is The Deepest might be the only exception, and I first heard that by Rod Stewart and didn't even know Cat wrote that or recorded it himself til years later.

In 1968 Stevens, still a teen, became gravely ill with tuberculosis.
It was during this time, pretty much all of 1969, when he took it upon himself to change his musical direction. While laid up in the hospital he wrote many songs.
These songs became that new direction and most ended up on the albums he released during the early '70's.

I also remember hearing talk of him being sick in the later 70's, when he was at the peak of his musical success.
Over the years, having read about him, I do believe the bout with tuberculosis was the only time he was seriously ill.

I was into Cat from Tea For The Tillerman [1970] and on.
I bought Mona Bone Jakon [1970] years after its release and liked that too.
Some albums I didn't like all that much, like Foreigner[1973] and Back To Earth[1978].
But the ones I did, and that includes the rest, I just loved. Played em all out.
One album called Numbers [1977] was really trashed by critics but it might be my absolute favorite of his.

The career he started when he suddenly left the music business is another. I remember thinking "WHAT!?"
He's not gonna make any more music? I was very disappointed although I have to say what he has done since
has only made me only respect him even more.
There is just something about his voice that is indescribably wonderful.

There is.

but, the way she took care of herself, walked hours everyday, was still sharp as a whip..
she would have easily lived into her 90s, maybe more.
I expected her to outlive me, and on some wacky level I hoped she would.

I never wanted to see her go.

I'm dealing with it. This has effected me in many ways, head, heart, health and soul.
There have been some very dark times but I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Still, very little seems to make any sense to me anymore.

I know you might say of course he's gonna say this, its his mom,
but she was a saint and lived the good life.

This is not the way she should have had to go.

Such is life, my friend.
Such is life.

All I really felt we need were some arms.
So the blame can firmly rest on Omars shoulders.
I in NO WAY had anything to do with the current state of our team.

It's weird sometimes, because we're all something of a bizarre extended family here with our common bonds, but at the same time, sometimes we're faceless strangers. (Even though we've met outside the Pool in some cases.)

I echo MF's thoughts; know that we're always here for you, even though we may very well be a bunch of axe-murderers for all you know.

As you all have already surmised, I've killed a few of them myself.
With extreme prejudice.

Thank you for all your thoughts guys.

Yesterday when I fired this thread up I didn't expect Vals question,
and I was compelled to answer honestly so I did.
I wasn't sure, after I hit send, if that was a good thing to do.
I'm a bit leery about sharing very private things with web-friends.

I can say now I know it was.
You guys are the reason I come here, and I had somewhat forgotten that.
Sure, the Mets are the subject, but you guys are the reason
Thank you.

Anyways, I don't wanna dwell on this here. Just wanted to fill you in.

What I came down here yesterday to tell youz is that "If I Laugh"
has gone up to #3 on the charts!
I'm sure those that went and played it, played a part in that.
Thanx for that too C'poolers.

[url]http://www.reverbnation.com/zvon#/main/bes_chart?artist_id=39781&genre=Other&genre_geo=Local

Two things.
1) I think if you play it once a day it counts as a vote.
2) It really is so much bullshit cause upon experimentation I found out that on my playlist,
whatever song I move up into the #1 slot ends up being the song they display there on the
chart. Still kool seeing something by me there tho.
Those carbunklebastages know this little boy loves candy.

When/if I get it up to #1 I'm gonna switch it for an original of mine and
WaLAA!

I'm a pop star.

You're a bundle of creativity.

I'm a bundle of something....

The continuing adventures of Zvon the charted musician:
The song went up to #2, and I get an Email from Reverb that says it cannot go any higher
up the charts until I acquire more fans.
So they lured me with the candy and now they wanna do something nasty to me.
I played their game, but I won't have other people jump thru hoops for me. (u have to register to become a fan)
So screw em.
(actually i really respect this site cuz i kept my songs there for over
2 years without even going there and they never deleted my page)
But still, you won't get me, ya dirty screws!

So now that I'm frozen at #2, I'll slip in an original, and I now have a #2 hit!
Story of my life, always fall just a lil short.

Re: Zvon's Original Artwork

I've pretty much decided that its gonna be a sketch of Ike Davis.
Now what I need is for Ike to make the rest of the fans around the country like him too.
I'm sure the odds of them using it are very low, and that's okay with me.

Considering that I lose the drawing itself, this isn't even on my
to do list.

I am taking contributions of Ike images with those restrictions above^.
I did find some on E-Bay but none have really motivated or inspired me.

It would be very kool to have a card in a future Topps set.
And it would be kinda like a Met rookie sketch.
Like I did for Dykstra when I thought he would play for the Mets for many years.
DOH!

Stay tuned here for The Further Adventures Of Big Met Guy.

TMF, are you well versed in this blog bidness?

The place is coming along, and I'm enjoying working on the site, but I don't know if I can do what I'm looking to do on a blog :(

What I'd like to do is always have the opening pages of the comic the first thing you see, and the rest following it.
And I'd like to add to it and the additions be on the bottom of the preceding entry, so they are in sequential order.

From what I can see, on Blogs everything is bassakwards, with the latest entry being on top and first.
Do you, or does anyone, know a way to strike that and reverse it?

Also, Poolians, I am looking for pictures of William Shea.
I found a very small number thru Google, 4 or so, but it would help if I had more pics of Bill Shea to work with.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thnx in advance, and then I'll thank you when you get em to me, and then I'll be forever in your debt and will have to follow ancient Poolial tradition and guard you from harm for the rest of your and my life, til you or I die.
If you die, and it involves harm, I'll have failed and then I'll probly kill myself. But if I die first..

Zvon - I'm reasonably versed in blogging (library school taught me a few things).

I'm sure what you want to do can be done, but I'm not sure you would want to do it that way; I honestly think that it would mess with people's minds too much.

I think ideally you want something like the Unshelved website, which has a home page, but gives the reader the option of starting at either the most recent strip or at the beginning.

I'm not positive I could set it up for you, but I can try to brainstorm it with you. PM me if you want to talk about it further.

Meanwhile, if someone else here can set Zvon up more efficiently, I won't be offended.

In Blogger, you can create a stand alone About Me page that could have the opening pages of the comic and which would link to the main blog.

I'm not sure whether you could change the order of blog posts. Plus I'm not entirely sure you would want to - I think it would probably confuse most readers, because the latest post at top is such a norm right now. People just aren't accustomed to scrolling down (especially when it is a potentially lengthy process).

I know this doesn't entirely satisfy what you want to do, but it might be a reasonable, easy to utilize compromise.

And use the opening page for an opening.......page.

Delay of game on the comic.
I can't post it at the size and quality I want it, as it stands now.
Maybe there's a way, but I haven't figured it out yet.
So this will go up on the shelf with Reyes for now.

So none of you fellow Met fans can help me with pictures of William Shea, from yearbooks or whatever?

I've pretty much scoured the web, and I'm really amazed there is so little about him out there, as far as I could see.
Any one have any links concerning Bill Shea that would not show up thru a google?

I wanted the blog page itself to display actual size high quality comic pages that scroll down.
But I'll gladly settle for the way it is.
