Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

Barring something really crazy happening, Travis Jankowski will likely join the ranks of Stony Brook "alumni" who have made the jump to the professional ranks. Hitting .412/.477/.632 in 228 AB this season (not counting yesterday's doubleheader), Jankowski projects somewhere in the supplemental first round or thereabouts. (Make it happen, Sandy.)

He'll join two Seawolves in the minors:

Tom Koehler is 6-4, 3.71 in 11 starts with AAA New Orleans. Koehler celebrated his addition to the 40-man roster by starting 0-3, but in his last seven starts, he's gone 6-1, 2.43, and if you throw out the one loss (8 runs, 2 1/3 innings), he's 6-0, 0.93 in the other six games.

He's knocking, Marlins.

Nick Tropeano was drafted in the fifth round by Houston. He's 4-3, 2.94 in 10 starts, with a 76/13 K/BB ratio and a 1.119 WHIP in 64 1/3 innings.

He's knocking, Astros.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

Jankowski goes #44 overall to the Padres, less than an hour after Stony Brook wins their regional bracket and heads to the "super regionals" against LSU. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

And catcher Pat Cantwell, selected in the 39th round last year but didn't sign, goes much higher this time, going 123rd overall (3rd round) to Texas, where Joe Nathan can keep a distant eye on him.

Tom Koehler made his MLB debut tonight against the Brewers. Flawless in the 6th, going 1-2-3, but gave up two long two-run homers in the seventh.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

Ready for 2013? We've got Seawolves on the field:

* in the majors -- Joe Nathan
* at AAA -- Tom Koehler, starting tomorrow on Opening Day for New Orleans (MIA)
* at AA -- Nick Tropeano, starting tomorrow on Opening Day for Corpus Christi (HOU)
* at high A -- Travis Jankowski in Lake Elsinore (SD), Pat Cantwell in Myrtle Beach (TEX), James Campbell in Rancho Cucamonga (LAD)
* at low A -- Maxx Tissenbaum in Fort Wayne (SD), William Carmona in Lakewood, NJ (PHI)

And two more guys, Tyler Johnson (OAK) and Jasvir Rakkar (CHC) who will probably find themselves in short-season ball.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

why can't the Mets ever draft one of these guys?

it reminds me of when the Knicks purposely skipped over St. Johns' Ron Artest to take Fredric Weis. well maybe not, but you know, lets get a local school feeding our minor league system. There'd be alot of support if a kid like that made it to the show in Queens.

I wish too, Vic. Was really hoping they'd grab one of the middle-round guys last spring.

As of 4/17:
Koehler (AAA Miami): 0-1, 1.06 ERA in 3 starts. 17 innings, 7 hits, 10 walks, 14 K
Tropeano (AA Houston): 0-2, 2.57 in 3 games. 14 innings, 13 hits, 2 walks, 15 K. 10 innings in his two starts, four innings and a save in a relief appearance for some reason.
Jankowski (A+ San Diego): .349/.408/.419 in 49 AB with only 2 Ks. Really impressive start.
Cantwell (A+ Texas): 2 for 16
Campbell (A+ Dodgers): 6 innings, 6 hits, 4 walks, 2 K. 4.50 ERA.
Carmona (A Philly): .190/.227/.238 in 42 AB, 0 HR, 1 RBI. Looks like he's mostly DHing this year.
Tissenbaum (A San Diego): .212/.449/.303 in 33 AB. Eleven walks in 11 games!

Or he can make a big splash and then get buried and dumped like Mark Jackson.

Johnnies have played for the Knicks over the years: Jackson, Mel Davis, Reggie Carter, Lavor Postell.

In earlier days: Dick and Al McGuire, John Warren, Max Zaslofsky.

It's another stupid side-effect of the draft and the salary cap. Teams shouldn't have to make coldblooded decisions between a hometown hero and other guys who rate a tad higher on their draft board. If they think the match is right, they should be able to take a both-and strategy. If the 1985 Knicks are in love with Mullin and how marketable he is in the New York region, they should be able to pursue both him and Ewing, if the money is too dear, they dial things down and go for Mullin and Karl Malone or Mullin and Xavier McDaniel, or say all Redman and go for Mullin and Bill Wennington.

That should be a viable option. It would be great.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

Checking in with the Seawolves crew.

Majors:
Nathan (Texas): Named to sixth All-Star team this year.
Koehler (Miami): 2-5, 4.38 in 17 games (11 starts). Started 0-5, but has won his last two. Pitched seven innings of one-run ball for his last W, the other night in Colorado.

Minors:
Tropeano (AA Houston): Has been part of the Astros "split-start" setup in AA all season. 4-7, 4.03, 5 saves. 1.331 WHIP, 3.23 K/BB.
Jankowski (A+ San Diego): .281/.354/.354 in 452 PA. Leads California League (by a lot) with 59 SB, 2nd with 74 R, 6th with 46 BB.
Cantwell (A+ Texas): .258/.328/.326 in 201 PA. Splitting time behind the plate with a guy hitting .221.
Campbell (A Dodgers): 1-8, 7.65 in 24 games (7 starts) across three levels.
Carmona (A Philly): .306/.351/.426 in 352 PA. Got off to a horrific start, but has turned it on. Five home runs. Mostly DHing, a little 1B/3B.
Tissenbaum (A San Diego): .270/.364/.350 in 401 PA. 38 BB/31 K.
Rakkar (A- Chicago): 1-1, 4.70 in 23 innings out of the pen. 1.087 WHIP, 2.38 K/BB.
Johnson (A- Oakland): 1-0, 1.61 in 22.1 innings, mostly out of the pen (one start). 0.985 WHIP, 1.83 K/BB.

I know there's a lot of season left, but I'm encouraged by what Tom Koehler's done in Miami -- knock out one awful start against the Cardinals, and his ERA is 3.53.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

I'll do another full update at the end of the season, but we've got ourselves a race (HA!) for the minor league stolen base crown.

Billy Hamilton (Lousville, AAA) -- 75
Travis Jankowski (Lake Elsinore, A+) -- 71
Terrance Gore (Lexington, A) -- 68

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

Let's take a look at the year that was:

Majors:
Nathan (Texas): 43 saves, 1.39 ERA, better career save percentage than Mariano Stupid Rivera. FUCK YOU METS YOU SHOULD HAVE SIGNED HIM.
Koehler (Miami): 5-10, 4.41 on the season. 1.357 WHIP. Threw more innings than any Marlin other than Jose Fernandez. Enough success, especially in his last three starts, that he'll be in the mix for Miami in 2014; with Fernandez/Eovaldi/Alvarez/Turner all likely in front of him, figure there's only one spot, though.

Minors:
Tropeano (AA Houston): 7-10, 4.11, 1.339 WHIP. Probably back in AA next year, I'd think.
Jankowski (A+ San Diego): .286/.356/.355 in 556 PA. Led California League (by a lot) with 71 SB, scored 89 runs despite missing the end of the year with a leg injury. AA in 2014, I'd think.
Cantwell (A+ Texas): .249/.313/.311 in 289 PA. Has thrown out 32% of runners trying to steal in the past two years, though.
Campbell (A Dodgers): 1-8, 7.65 in 24 games (7 starts) across three levels, moving the wrong direction. Thanks for the memories, James.
Carmona (A Philly): .303/.356/.433 in 505 PA. Got off to a horrific start, but turned it on. (Hit .363 in June, .311 in August, .309 in September.) Six home runs. Mostly DHing, a little 1B/3B.
Tissenbaum (A San Diego): .277/.365/.359 in 401 PA. 43 BB/36 K. Gotta figure he slides up too.
Rakkar (A- Chicago): 4-1, 3.58 in 37 2/3 innings out of the pen. 1.088 WHIP, 4.10 K/BB. August: 13 2/3 innings, 3 ER, 2 BB, 21 K. Nice!
Johnson (A- Oakland): 1-0, 1.71 in 42 innings, 3 saves. 1.167 WHIP.

Expected to start in AAA, but most things I'm reading say he'll probably wind up in Houston at some point this season.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

2014 so far:

Majors:
Nathan (Detroit): Struggling early on with some "dead arm" issues. Three saves.
Koehler (Miami): 2-1, 2.13 - has looked great in four starts.

Minors:
Tropeano (AAA Houston): 1-1, 3.32 in 19 innings. Should make his way up to Houston at some point.
Jankowski (AA San Diego): .246/.313/.295 in 61 AB. Has only stolen four bases so far.
Cantwell (AA Texas): .294 OPS in 32 PA. (Not a typo.) Has thrown out 9 of 14 runners trying to steal, though.
Carmona (AA Philly): .220 OPS in 41 PA. (Also not a typo.)
Tissenbaum (A+ Tampa): .275/.310/.330 in 40 AB. Catching now, apparently? Weird. Had no idea. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2014/3/1 ... -with-blog
Campbell (A Dodgers): 0-1, 6.78 ERA in three starts, awful peripherals.
Rakkar (Chicago): hasn't started yet
Johnson (Oakland): hasn't started yet

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

May 9 update!

Majors:
Nathan (Detroit): 2-0, seven saves in eleven games.
Koehler (Miami): 3-2, 1.99 in seven starts. Met killer.

Minors:
Tropeano (AAA Houston): 1-3, 2.94 in 33 innings.
Jankowski (AA San Diego): .254/.324/.299 in 75 PA. Just broke his wrist and will miss "significant time." DAMMIT.
Cantwell (AA Texas): .370 OPS in 56 PA. (Not a typo.) Has thrown out 10 of 21 runners trying to steal, though.
Carmona (AA Philly): .349 OPS in 67 PA. (Also not a typo.) Three errors, which is why he's mostly DHing.
Tissenbaum (A+ Tampa): .305/.341/.366 in 88 AB. Splitting time between C and DH.
Campbell (A Dodgers): 1-1, 4.91 ERA in four starts, but a 2.018 WHIP.
Rakkar (Chicago): hasn't started yet
Johnson (Oakland): hasn't started yet

Still have to figure that Nick Tropeano will see some MLB innings at some point this season, which is encouraging. And Maxx Tissenbaum has certainly taken to catching. But the three AA guys have had a rough go.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

As we get ready to add another player (or two?) to this list, let's recap:

Majors:
Nathan (Detroit): 2-2, 6.86 ERA, 13 saves. Has been booed because he's given up eight runs in an inning and a third in his last three outings. "Still the closer," sez Brad Ausmus.
Koehler (Miami): 5-5, 3.33 in twelve starts. Met killer. Slowed down since his hot start and walking too many guys. I still believe.

Minors:
Tropeano (AAA Houston): 3-4, 2.28 in 59 innings. Houston? We have a prospect.
Jankowski (AA San Diego): .254/.324/.299 in 75 PA. Still recovering from his wrist injury.
Cantwell (AA Texas): .569 OPS in 103 AB. I still believe.
Carmona: .333 OPS in 85 AB with high-A Clearwater. Was released on May 23. Not currently playing anywhere as far as I can tell. (Hey, Ducks?)
Tissenbaum (A+ Tampa): .276/.313/.321 in 134 AB. Splitting time between C and DH.
Campbell (A Dodgers): 1-1, 4.91 ERA in four starts, but a 2.018 WHIP. On the DL.
Rakkar (Chicago): hasn't started yet
Johnson (Oakland): hasn't started yet

All-Star Break Update!

Majors:
Nathan (Detroit): 4-2, 6.16 ERA, 17 saves. Hasn't been great, but has been more or less getting the job done.
Koehler (Miami): 6-6, 3.48 in twelve starts. Made the Phillies look awful last night. AGAINST NL EAST: 58.1 IP, 2.31 ERA, 2.27 K/W. AGAINST EVERYONE ELSE: 45 IP, 5.00 ERA, 1.88 K/W. Faces the Mets next weekend. (Again.)

Minors:
Tropeano (AAA Houston): 6-4, 2.38 in 87 innings. His manager says he has "major league stuff." http://nwsdy.li/1mWMnhy
Jankowski (AA San Diego -- DL): .254/.324/.299 in 75 PA. Still rehabbing from his wrist injury.
Cantwell (AA Texas): .588 OPS in 145 AB. Has thrown out 17 of 40 on SB attempts.
Tissenbaum (A+ Tampa): .311/.341/.430 in 193 AB. Selected to the league All-Star Team. Has eight passed balls in his first season catching.
Campbell (A Dodgers -- DL): 1-1, 4.91 ERA in four starts, but a 2.018 WHIP. Still on the DL.
Rakkar (A- Chicago): 14 ER in 10 1/3 innings across two levels this season. Urg.
McNitt (A- Houston): 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 6 K in three relief appearances.
Krause (A- Pittsburgh): .257/.357/.657 with three home runs in nine games (42 PA), five as C, four as DH. CALL HIM UP!
Johnson (Oakland): hasn't started yet
Carmona: .333 OPS in 85 AB with high-A Clearwater. Was released on May 23. Not currently playing anywhere as far as I can tell. (Hey, Ducks?)

Travis is back! And he's got five RBI in his first two games off the DL. Update:

Majors:
Nathan (Detroit): 4-3, 5.31 ERA, 23 saves. 11 IP, 15 K, only 3 R in July/August. Finally turning it around.
Koehler (Miami): 7-9, 3.80 in 23 starts.

Minors:
Tropeano (AAA Houston): 7-4, 2.97 in 97 innings. CALL HIM UP, HOUSTON.
Jankowski (AA San Diego -- DL): He's back! See above.
Cantwell (AA Texas): .672 OPS in 229 AB. Leads the league with 17 HBP, and has a 33% CS%.
Tissenbaum (A+ Tampa): .304/.334/.418 in 273 AB.
Campbell (A Dodgers -- DL): 1-1, 4.91 ERA in four starts, but a 2.018 WHIP. Still on the DL.
Rakkar (A Chicago): Has played at four levels -- include one AAA inning with Iowa for some reason -- this season.
McNitt (A- Houston): 1-0, 3.42 in 23.2 innings. 1.056 WHIP.
Krause (A- Pittsburgh): .268/.350/.545. 7 HR ties him for fourth the NYP League.
Johnson (Oakland): hasn't started yet(??)
Carmona: .333 OPS in 85 AB with high-A Clearwater. Still not playing anywhere as far as I can tell.

Your spring update:

Majors:
Nathan (Detroit): Injured; TJ surgery, will miss the year. Could be the end of the road.
Koehler (Miami): 2-3, 4.62 in 7 starts. Meh.

Minors:
Tropeano (AAA Angels): 1-1, 4.20 in five starts (1.30 WHIP, 28 K). Also threw six scoreless and got a W in a spot start in LA.
Jankowski (AA San Diego): .333/.420/.425 in 120 AB. Second in the Texas League with 13 SB, making Juan Lagares look like Todd Hundley out there: http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp? ... 3&sid=milb
Cantwell (AA Texas): 9 hits in 46 AB, 0 for 25 throwing out runners. Stuck behind a younger guy who's a better prospect, too.
Tissenbaum (A+ Tampa): 10 hits in 48 AB. Also stuck behind a younger guy. Argh.
Rakkar (A+ Chicago): 1.37 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in 19 2/3 innings at A and high-A.
McNitt (A Houston): Just started his season; pitched a scoreless 6th and 7th, then gave up three runs in the 8th.
Krause (A- Pittsburgh): Season hasn't started yet.

James Campbell and Tyler Johnson drop off the list; neither one appears to be playing this year.

Majors:
Nathan (Detroit): Injured; TJ surgery, will miss the year. Could be the end of the road.
Koehler (Miami): 7-5, 3.40. Still gets no respect despite having the second-best season of any Fish starter. (Jose Fernandez notwithstanding.)

Minors:
Tropeano (AAA Angels): 2-3, 4.67. Back from his rotator cuff injury.
Jankowski (AA San Diego): .313/.394/.392. Currently with the USA National Team at the Pan Am Games, where he's tied for the lead in hits with nine.
Cantwell (AA Texas): .207/.271/.307 in 150 AB. Throwing guys out, but not as well as in previous years.
(FUN SIDE NOTE: Jankowski stole two bases on Cantwell in April.)
Tissenbaum (A+ Tampa): .244/.337/.288 in 156 AB.
Rakkar (A+ Chicago): 2.40 ERA, 10 saves. Currently with the Canadian National Team at the Pan Am Games; has thrown one inning.
McNitt (A Houston): 1-3, 5.63 in 8 starts.

Jankowski (AAA San Diego): KILLING IT IN AAA. .442/.500/.558 in 60 PA. 2016 NL Rookie of the Year.

NOT retired as it turns out. Just signed a deal with the Cubs of all teams, who then immediately placed him on the 60-day DL.
Hasn't pitched since his opening day of 2015, a 4-pitch save he recorded which preceded his TJ surgery later on that month. The hope is that the now 41 y/o will be game ready by July.

At least he didn't get called in to pitch.
The Padres used two position player pitchers (Chritian Betancourt, Alexi Amarista) in the same game whilst getting blown out by the Mariners Tuesday night.
I guess that's one of the privileges of being a 1st round draft pick.

Now that he's getting a chance, he's really running with it, no pun intended. A .365 OBP would put him 24th in the NL if he qualified, and he's fourth in the league in steals.

.340/.441/.400 in August, too. As soon as he learns to hit lefties, he's going to be bananas.

Re: Adopted: Seawolves in the Pros

Tom Koehler to Toronto gives me reason to update.

Majors:
Tropeano (Angels): Will miss 2017 with TJS. Expects to pitch in a Fall League somewhere.

Minors:
Koehler (Toronto): Was awful in Miami, great in AAA... we'll see where the Jays start him.
Jankowski (AAA San Diego): Spending the rest of the month in AAA (.241/.353/.322 in 87 AB) recovering from a foot injury, then back in ten days when rosters expand.
Cantwell (AA Toronto): 5-34 with his two teams, now on the DL. Hasn't played since May 8.
Krause (A+ Pittsburgh): .281/.369/.461 with 9 HR in 256 AB. Has slowed down some.

Might as well keep this alive, even though I'm not *technically* a Seawolf any more.

Majors:
Tropeano (Angels): Makes his 2018 debut tonight against KC. Struck out 7 in 3 2/3 innings in AAA last week.
Koehler (Dodgers): On the 60 for now; should be back over the summer some time.

Minors:
Jankowski (AAA San Diego): 7-25 with 10 K and *zero* walks in six games. Gotta start getting on base if he's going to get the call.
Cantwell (AA Toronto): .154/.353/.154 in four games, splitting time behind the plate.
Krause (AA Pittsburgh): Walked in his only AB in Altoona so far. Not sure why he's not playing more.
Zamora (AA Mets): First outing: 1 2/3 IP, 2 ER. Second outing: 2 IP, 4 ER. Yikes.
Honahan (R MFYs): Not sure where he'll be.

Indy:
Tissenbaum (Quebec, Can-Am): Not sure if he's playing this season or not.
Campbell (Wichita, American Assoc): Signed for 2018; season starts next month.
Parenty (Schaumburg, Frontier): Signed for 2018; season starts next month.

No Seawolves got drafted by the NFL this year (keeping our record of futility intact), but 5 have been signed as UDFAs so far:

Chris Cooper, DB (Colts)
Tyrice Beverette, DB (Jets)
Ray Bolden, WR (Eagles)
Stacey Bedell, RB (49ers)
Timon Parris, OT (Reds***s)

I was really hoping the Jets would pick up Parris. Not only do they need an OT, he's got a great classical name.
