I saw this one last night. It is pitched as Ridley Scott's quasi-prequel to the Alien film series, but other than the opening title and the last 45 seconds of the movie, it stands on it's own as a philosophical sci-fi flick.

Earth scientists that discover mutiple cave paintings are funded by an aging, dying man to travel into distant space to find an ancient species that they believe started life on Earth. Things get dicey as circumstances are not what they first seem to be and alien-infested hijinks ensue.

Ridley Scott can still create an amazing visual film. During the first scenes on the huge transport ship, the references not just to his 1979 Alien film, but also the sequels are evident in the design and feel of the shots. The Alien series world is definitey visually represented in the film, even if it is very rarely referenced by the plot or characters.

The story was almost too big for the film. Unfortunately, the philosphical who-are-we and where-did-we-come-from questions were attempted, but were lost in the tension of the action sequences. I definitely sat through the second half of the film with a feeling that I wasn't entirely sure what was going on and that there would be a big "AHA!" moment...but it never came.

The acting was decent, but again, the character development was overshadowed by the action and granduer of the situations. Michael Fassbender playing the obligitory Alien series android was the best of the bunch.

I was amazed at the amount of actors in this movie that were playing characters with different accents than their native one:

Noomi Rapace is Swedish, but had a British-ish accent
Michael Fassbender is German born, but moved to Ireland at the age of two, but had an American/British/Android accent
Guy Pearce is an Austrailian, but had an American accent
Idris Elba is British, but had an American accent
Charlize Theron is South African, but had an American accent
Patrick Wilson had a small role; he is American, but had a British accent

I guess I was hoping for more of a true Alien prequel, so I came away slightly disappointed, although, I would have most likely been disappointed in a true attempt anyway. I will definitely watch this film again when it comes out for home viewing, as I feel there is a lot that I missed in trying to keep up with the action. I wouldn't mind immediately revisiting the original Alien now, too.

This film was better than most but not excellent.

Re: Prometheus (2012)

The more I think about it, there have to be sequels that bridge the gap between this one and Alien. There are way to many questions left unanswered that lead me to believe there will be more...otherwise this movie was worse than I originally thought walking out of the theater.

Re: Prometheus (2012)

i would appreciate it if Sir Ridley just stopped making movies. This was as big, stupid, and stupifyingly pointless as any movie i've ever seen from him, and that's saying quite a bit. The film's horrific elements are ones he's used before; nothing new or innovative there. The theological/philosophical musings are banal, half-baked inanities. The characters are largely ignored, which is ok, cuz most of the performances suck anyway. Noomi Rapace (so good as the original girl with the dragon tattoo) does the best she can as the "true believer" (believer of what? who knows), but when she starts running all over the place immediately after having emergency stomach surgery, things get just too ridiculous (didn't anybody working on this film realize that surgically severed stomach muscles tend to be a hindrance to locomotion?). Guy Pearce is wasted under a ton of LITTLE BIG MAN age makeup (they could have cast his orthopedist in the role, for all it would've mattered). Charlize Theron is doing entirely too many "evil blonde ice queen" roles. And Charlize, take a tip from Noomi... when something huge, long and relatively narrow is falling straight down on top of you in a line, don't run straight ahead; just make a left. or a right. either way. And what is the guy from the WIRE doing here, talking about Stephen Stills' accordian? And if you were a scientist who was too scared to stay in the presence of a dead alien, so much so that you and another chicken scientist decided to walk back to the ship without waiting for the others in the party, and then you and your chicken buddy get stuck in the alien underground to wait out a storm, would you really go up to an alien worm/snake/serpent thingy rising up out of alien black goo and go "cootchy coo" while trying to pet it? REALLY?

Ridley, your narrative sense was always borderline non-existent, but you've gone completely round the bend, without even visual innovation to distract us. You ain't great, Scott. Go back to commercials for the BBC and leave us the hell alone.

Re: Prometheus (2012)

I saw it today. There was so much hype about it being the prequel to Alien that I wanted to see if it could stand on its own.
It could only kneel.

Dumb stuff for dumb reasons, as Vic and Monk have said.

One reason I went was to see the early evolution/ form of the creatures. Ridley has said how they kept evolving when he was interviewed in those "Making of ... " short promos for numers 3 and 4.
I found this version of the creatures, and their "delivery systems". kind of interesting.

Maybe if I had seen it in 3-D, Charlize would have made it more worthwhile.

Re: Prometheus (2012)

if you didn't like it that much, why'd you give it an "8"?

Mis-entered.
Couldn't change it.
Thought I gave it a 6.
And like Monk, I'd probably drop that a point after thinking about it for a day.

I did like the answering of questions from #1 about the oversized space travelers. And I liked the earlier versions/ forms of the alien monsters. And the idea of a (SPOILER ALERT!!) sexually transmitted alien was interesting.
But I also agree with most of what you wrote. While watching, I also wondered about why they tried to escape from under the falling ship by moving straight instead of sideways.

to be sure, its not the only or first film in which this happens. But it drives me crazy whenever i see it. "MAKE A RIGHT!", i yell. But the characters resist my declamations. Except here, the dragon tattoo girl actually DOES roll to the right and out of the path of the falling ship, so clearly its a concept that exists in their universe, which makes Ms. Theron's decision to cling to parallelism even more inexplicable.

But it did explain the only way someone that dumb was able to ascend to the head of a large corporation.
Nepotism.
