In all a reasonably encouraging outing from Young.
If he could have retired the opposing pitcher he'd probably still be in there.

And his PH cashed in his AB too.

Awkward pop-up with even more awkward bounce that DW picks up on a full run and throws across his body... On that failed sac bunt force-play, David Wright just made maybe the most mundane-looking crazy play I've seen since the Eric Bruntlett game-ending unassisted triple.

4-3, one out in the eighth. Francisco on to face Morse with Zim at second.

And Frank Frank's been quietly awesome the last five times out or so. He might be a good deal safer to use here than Bobby, who seems to hang stuff in homer-able position with more regularity.

Heroic inning from Parnell when you think about it. I don't think anyone got the ball out of the infield.

Now the problem is his fielders made him throw like 58 pitches that inning.

Plus that whole inning turned the Nats order over so they get the top of the order up again.

Re: IGT 06/05/12-Mets @ Nationals

You have to think someone is leaving tonight for Beato/Schwinden/whoever to come help out tomorrow.

Besides the Dickey option, the Mets could ask Hefner to give them something and eliminate his start (Mets are in 6 man rotation right now)

yeah, I actually don't really blame the bullpen here. Parnell was real good. Elvin wasn't horrible, and I suspect that was waaay out of his comfort zone there and I imagine he was more gassed than anything at the end. People were criticizing the Nats for swinging, but kudos to Ramirez for getting it at least close enough and hard enough to get them to swing. (although I have no idea what the pticher was doing with the bunting) The game-winning hit was really just a soft liner.

So, a little Second Guess Theater.

[list:19oyxtkv][*:19oyxtkv]Thole's bunt was a bad move at several levels as describe above.

[/*:m:19oyxtkv]
[*:19oyxtkv]If you're going to pinch-hit your backup catcher as the last man off the bench, you might as well swap him into an extra-inning game. Both Thole and Flores seemed wasted and having trouble focusing at the end.

[/*:m:19oyxtkv]
[*:19oyxtkv]Batista is a starter in the pen. Why use him first and why pull him after 21 pitches? Howie or Josh said at the time that Terry needed to get him some work. I'm not so sure the sixth inning of a game, even if you're down 3-0, is the time to worry about getting guys work. They have a game to win and they have at least one reliever that's unavailable.

[/*:m:19oyxtkv]
[*:19oyxtkv]Why not at least get Dickey up? Elvin was left out to dry. Heck, Hefner too. All hands on deck. We're playing for first.[/*:m:19oyxtkv][/list:u:19oyxtkv]

I just wonder if we spend so much time looking down the road that we let the present slip away from us.

Re: IGT 06/05/12-Mets @ Nationals

On Dickey, I suspect he threw a bullpen or something earlier in the day. I know it's a knuckleball, but he's still 37. his legs are 37. etc. I'm sure they figured with Batista doing the long relief if Young went short they'd be fine playing two short in the pen. (also Batista was just back, so who even knows what he would give you) But managers rarely plan for extra innings it seems, and this was where it was shortsighted. At the time of using Batista he was barely considering the option of it. It's one of those 'use everybody every day' thing. Davey did the same, it just so happens his last guy was a long reliever type. We'd have had Hefner (or he'd be down for another reliever) if not for Johan sadly enough. I would've DL'd Rauch given that he hasn't been effective, the pen is short, and it's not like "uhh, just sit there for three days" is a guarantee cure.

hate the bunt, particularly at the bottom of the order like that.

Hefner probably would've been a wise call. Especially after the tie when you needed him anyway if you were going to win. I know it messes up tomorrow, and there really aren't any starters and its' a mess and whatever (I don't think you bring Dickey back on short rest without preparing. Someone floated the idea of a spot start for Familia tomorrow. one and done since it was his day anyway and he's on the 40 man) but Hefner probably could've given you plenty of innings and suddenly the Mets have the bullpen advantage as their guy was tiring as well. Plus Hefner hit a home run the other day, maybe he would've put bat on ball and gotten lucky in the top of the inning.

Yeah, I hoped for more. I think Howie and Josh were trying to say--and you may have a better recollection than I, as I had little Solo chiming in from the back seat--is that Miggie needed to give Terry some extended work here with a short bullpen. It just happened that Terry was also looking to get him some work. Considering that they also double-switched Duda out of the game, I hoped we could get innings 6-7-8 out of Batista.

well, generally your long-reliever is a "hey, that guy sorta sucks" guy that you don't want to use elsewhere. In the Mets case, given Johan and Young starting today first game back and pitch counts and all that, Terry was set to use Miguel, also back from injury, early to keep his 'good' bullpen guys from getting overworked from here. not that it "just so happened" but it was the right confluence of circumstances.

I disagree without double-switching out Duda too.

Re: IGT 06/05/12-Mets @ Nationals

The Nationals added a lefty to their bullpen for the Mets series, giving them four. The Mets are a reliever short in their bullpen. Bad roster management by the Mets. Rauch has sucked lately... give him two weeks off.

The Duda double-switch was strange. Shorty's thinking was likely to have the pitcher's turn in the order come up as late as possible (because he had one fewer reliever) so he took out Duda (last out) rather than Nieuwenhuis (batting 1st) or Torres (batting #2)... but he PH anyway for Nieuwenhuis so he didn't accomplish anything. And he had to use Satin to PH for the pitcher with Torres on 3d, 1 out in the 8th rather than Duda and Satin struck out. Shorty managed the 6th like it was the 8th.

Edgy eloquently speaks the truth: "I just wonder if we spend so much time looking down the road that we let the present slip away from us." Perhaps management doesn't believe so they won't provide the resources for needed reinforcements which leads to what we saw last night.

Re: IGT 06/05/12-Mets @ Nationals

I don't have a problem with lifting young for a pinch hitter - and don't forget TC did actually artfully pinch hitting situations that we got a lot out of. It's Batista that I object to, a) it's for Satin, b) we're in the lead and c) it was with only one out.
This may be easier for me to say for I watched till about the 4th (which was only about 1 am as they were really flying through the innings) so I didn't have to bear witness to the horror show (Valedspin's through the legs was just awful to see even though I knew the result!). It sort of felt like trouble came in 3s much the way buses do in Dublin.
There's a saying in most sports that you learn more by losing then you do by winning and I think that's going to be true for Jordanny Valedspin, Terry Collins, Daniel Murphy, Elvin Ramirez and Sandy Alderson after that.

It's crap to lose, but you can't complain about the effort, merely the execution.
