IGT 6/6/12 Mets @ Nationals Hefner v. Jackson Baywatch

A new day a new game... On the bright side Elvin Ramirez throws very very hard and may he be able to command it.

On the other side Tejada did pull himself from the Buffalo game as he felt quariceps tightness and was afraid to run.

Jason Bay returns to the team tonight with Canadian cheer and a booming bat...

Bay and Beato are back, C. Young is on paternity leave and Satin was DFA'd.

I hope that Satin gets through waivers.

Satin's a weird guy. I guess you can blame drafting him but he tore it up last year in the minors, they added him to the 40 man, and now he's expendable? Feels like they should've just taken the chance no one would take him rule-5 and leave him off the roster.

"Need" him? What did he get, one AB? Isn't it entirely possible he was promoted because he was on the 40man and that if he was never put on it, they'd have added someone else?

I have trouble with the concept that Satin was important enough to get a key AB in last night's game and yet be insignificant enough to be discarded the day after.

What does that have to do with anything? Of course they would add "someone else." You want to say you knew who in November?

This is my point. If he's just disposable depth anyway, why ever add him to the 40 man? Why bring him up after the Mets were eliminated last year. Save the 40 man spot. He's DFA'd now anyway, if someone wants him, he's gone. If someone wanted him this offseason, they would've had to keep him on the major league roster or give him back, so if you don't think he's a full time player anyway, chances are you'll get him back if someone does claim him. Now someone can claim him and he can be that AAAA guy for them, as long as they have the roster flexibility the Mets don't.

I didn't want them to cut him, I wanted them to not promote him to the 40 man roster. It just doesn't seem to make sense to me, if you're going to cut him this fast. If this is all you thought his upside was, why not keep F-Mart instead?

Probably. But in a way they removed F-Mart to make/keep room for Satin. Martinez was always the better prospect.

I'm just trying to get a handle on the roster management. It seems sloppy.

Martinez was always the better whatever. Their opinion was that Satin had more value to them going forward. I disagreed. You apparently did too. But until Martinez starts putting points on the scoreboard at the big league level, it's still an open question.

well yeah, I'm just questioning if they really had that opinion given the little rope they gave Satin.

Martinez 1 2B, 2RBI to Satin's nothing so far. Might be an insurmountable lead.

Silliness. People get DFA'd all the time. (Maybe Martinez does next.) Buying an insurance policy wasn't foolish because your house didn't burn down.

Ceetar
Jun 06 2012 02:35 PM
Re: IGT 6/6/12 Mets @ Nationals Hefner v. Jackson Baywatch

This isn't really about Martinez though.

It's about the chance they actually gave Satin. Why is he an expendable 40th man? And if he's not going to stick in the majors, why did you add him to the 40 man roster to begin with? Or is it just the two months of minor league ball have decided them?

Ceetar
Jun 06 2012 02:37 PM
Re: IGT 6/6/12 Mets @ Nationals Hefner v. Jackson Baywatch

Also, Satin was playing first base almost exclusively (and not hitting for any power) in Buffalo. DFAing one of your 40man 1B options probably says something about the immanency of demoting Ike.

Re: IGT 6/6/12 Mets @ Nationals Hefner v. Jackson Baywatch

(1) He's not being expended, he's being exposed. (2) He's being exposed because they need somebody else. (3) What he was then and and what he is now, as far as market value, isn't the same. (4) What he was exposed to then and and what he's being exposed to now, isn't the same, as far as risk.

Re: IGT 6/6/12 Mets @ Nationals Hefner v. Jackson Baywatch

We're going in circles. He was an insurance policy.

The Mets have hundreds of players in their system. Most of them won't play for them. That doesn't indicate a lack of a plan.

Re: IGT 6/6/12 Mets @ Nationals Hefner v. Jackson Baywatch

This is ridiculous. He got on the roster the same way every 40-man player does, because he was one of the 40 best options at the time.

Now he's not.

No he wasn't. The season was 'over'. He didn't even play much, wasn't a part of the offseason plan, had virtually no chance to make the team this Spring. And they've been facing a roster crunch that entire time.

Fine, he was an insurance policy. For what exactly? Like you said, hundreds of players in the system. They resigned Val Pascucci. They could've signed anyone else for minor league minimum if Satin got claimed in the Rule 5 draft. Insurance guys that far down the depth chart shouldn't be on the 40 man.

They may have the best pitching ... okay, they do ... but the Mets were lucky to miss Gio and Strasburg this series. Woulda been nice to have Johan make his scheduled start tonight because you'd rather have him pitch against the division leaders than against anyone else. Let's wait and see if there's any more fallout from the no-hitter.

[*]If the stadium gun means anything, I was really surprised to see Batista consistently hitting 93-94 on it.

[*]With that first inning and our defense, we really looked sunk, and I was mildly impressed to be in it at all at the end. I guess that's part of what Terry may be credited with (falsely or not) --- after losing Reyes, we see three middle infielders land on the DL, and they stay with it. Like Murphy trying to recover on a muffed grounder, this team stays with it.

[*]Whoever said Terry uses the shift more than most was right. Didn't help much tonight, though.

Awful night at the ballpark (other than an excellent meal at Shake Shack). It was over early and there wasn't much hope when 5 through 8 in the lineup is so awful. I agree with Edgy about Beato v Byrdak. I didn't understand using Hairston to lead-off an inning down two runs. I enjoyed the tattooed Mets fan in my aisle who yelled "Omar's Coming!" whenever Quintanillia came up (that's a The Wire reference). Harper's swing is an act of violence (Murphy's swings are like the gentle caressing of a kitten).

(Should I have bulleted these, Edgy-style?)

Re: IGT 6/6/12 Mets @ Nationals Hefner v. Jackson Baywatch

I was fourth row on the leftfield spot just at the corner where the seats curve around to meet the foul line. A few rows behind the ballgirl.

I didn't mind Hairston there, by the way. He was subbing in for the guy he platoons with, we had him matched up against a lefty --- which there was no guarantee of if they pinch-hit him for somebody later, and if we put together any late rally at all, he'd've gotten a second plate appearance. He didn't do anything, though.

Kirk still isn't really a big-league hitter vs. lefties. I suppose you can pinch-hit Rottino there and save Hairston for an RBI situation, but there's no guarantee you get him up there against a lefty if one arises. Just didn't work out.
