I will be in attendance for this one. The #mets top two draft picks will be taking BP 'with'? the team before the game. I should probably at least remember their names.

Re: IGT Mets vs. Reds 6/15/12 - Buck Up, Little Campers

Deep fly to left. Bay ran after it , speeding up as he went, pretty much dove/lunged head first into the wall, missing the ball and hitting the wall very hard. Head and neck scrunched and he really ended up in what I can only describe as a stupor.

Do the Mets have injury insurance on his contract? (Is that not standard in mlb? I know in the nba it was a big deal that the knicks couldn't insure stoudemire bc of his back)

Certainly not standard and, like Grimm said, often prohibitively expensive.
If there is a policy there's a good chance that it's limited to things like career-ending injuries (too soon to know whether this will be that) and often it doesn't even cover the final year because clubs are most concerned with being on the hook for multiple years of an unusable player and so it's easier to simply save the premium for that last year.

Re: IGT Mets vs. Reds 6/15/12 - Buck Up, Little Campers

Hairston really needs to be starting most days at this point. Torres needs to sit the bench so Duda-Hairston-Kirk can play unless Ike starts looking bad enough to get sent down (he's had the mild beginnings of a rebound but he's not there yet at all.)

The Bay injury reminds me of the old definition about mixed emotions - like watching your mother-in-law go over a cliff in your new car.
I feel bad for Bay and hope he's ok.
Maybe its because he hasn't played enough due to his other injuries so he wasn't familiar with the new dimensions.
That said, every at bat he doesn't have (due to injuries) means the last year on his contract is farther away from vesting.

I wonder - is there a tribute to Pete Reiser in the Rotunda?

34,716 is the paid attendance tonight, highest since opening weekend.

Two weeks ago was Johan's no-hitter, 27,069 paid. 24,498 paid the Friday night before that against the Padres.

I'll guess that REO Speedwagon being on the bill sold...about 3,500 tickets? 4,000?

Keep in mind also that a regular rotation of Duda-Hairston-Nieuwenhuis means more ABs for Kirk against LHPs where he's hitting .200 with 1 XBH,
and also more ABs for Hairston against RHPs where he's hitting under .200 with one (now two) of his nine HRs

The old 'addition by subtraction' theory is rarely as advantageous as it might seem at first glance.

Re: IGT Mets vs. Reds 6/15/12 - Buck Up, Little Campers

Thoughts:

Screw you classless Mets fans booing Jason Bay as he walks off the field with a possible concussion.

That play almost seemed to rattle Gee, who did at least settle down.

Do the Mets come out flat first game after a flight? It seems that way. They've definitely lost 3/4, Washington, NY, not Tampa, tonight.

Mets seem to be heating up power wise. This is a good thing, but they managed to be stifled otherwise tonight. If the power, and Davis, are truly going to be there, this offense will be really good.

Murphy's starting to worry me a little bit. Collins says he's not tired or anything when asked about resting him some, even talked himself into getting to play second yesterday instead of DHing.

The Cleon (patra) Jones Two Boots Pizza Slice was pretty good.

Was interesting to see the two first round draft picks. They didn't really say much beyond the typical "put your work in, gotta work hard. improve 1% every day" stuff. The SS, Cecchini?, mentioned something about why he was wearing #2, but Sandy say his comment was stricken from the record so I don't know what it was.

Not sure what to make of Elvin Ramirez. He seemed okay that first inning, then struggled and then bounced back.

Cleon Jones with a Cleon(patra) Jones pizza slice

Re: IGT Mets vs. Reds 6/15/12 - Buck Up, Little Campers

THOUGHTS ON THE GAME!!!!!!
1. Most crowded I'd seen CitiField in 3 years
2. That said, crowd was dead
3. Reds hit Gee very hard in 1st and 2nd
4. Bay non-catch also sucked wind from building
5. Fans who booed were idiots but the frustration with Bay was palpable even among those of us polite enough not to boo. It's time he stopped trying to be an everyday player.
6. Was seated in 508. Just across the aisle in 507 were Greg Fafif and UniWatch Paul.
7. Jolly guy in Tony Perez jersey confessed to me in men's room line that he became a baseball fan by getting a signed ball from Red Tom Seaver at age 11. I had just turned 11 when Seaver was traded.
8. Said Citifield reminded him of Great American.
9. Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin sung first 3 songs wearing blue Mets pullover style jersey with CRONIN 11 on back.
10. Josh Thole needs to start hitting.
11. I'm gonna keep on lovin you. Cuz it's the only thing I wanna do.

The Mets best hitting catcher this year, admittedly a low bar, was Rob Johnson who they sent to Buffalo and kept Nickeas. Thole is not a good player--name one thing he does well of the 5 tools--so the opportunity is there for someone in the system to step up.

Re: IGT Mets vs. Reds 6/15/12 - Buck Up, Little Campers

Thole's demonstrated to be a capable LH singles hitter in the past and in the minors. Doesn't look like he'll be a whole lot more than that, but he hasn't hit much since Wiggy rung his bell.

I was not at all impressed with Johnson defensively (and his track record doesn't suggest he'd be appreciably better than the other 2 options). I think the team is resigned to having a lousy hitter as the reserve catcher and went with the better glove/pitch-handler of the two in Nickeas.

Re: IGT Mets vs. Reds 6/15/12 - Buck Up, Little Campers

It was OK. You know, they worked pretty hard for a band doing the same 10 songs for the millionth time, I sort of appreciated that from them. Maybe it was the lighting but their guitar player had this crazy look on his face the whole time, sorta like he was a kid getting away with doing something he knew he wasn't supposed to be doing, but the look was like, permanent. He also had an unfortunate combover thing happening that was another reminder that the whole thing was sort of artificial.

Cronin really isn't a great singer, he's barely a good one, but he tries to make it up for it with hokey Midwest enthusiasm. At one point during the jammy finish to "Roll with the Changes" he left the stage with a wireless mic, went over and sung to the crowd by the railing in shallow left, then waltzed down the third base line and sort of finished with a jump onto home plate. He acknowledged REO's bar-band roots playing "Son of a Poor Man" and "Ridin the Storm Out" from 1973; and one song sung by the bass player (who also wasn't much of a vocalist but my god his hair was beautiful: Long flowing and snow white). They played for about an hour with most of what you'd expect from their greatest hits (opening of course with "Don't Let Him Go"and including "Can't Fight This Feelin" "Keep Pushin'" "Take it on the Run" etc)

The stage behind 2nd base was such that nobody could really see the musicians themselves very well from the stands other than on the big screens. They never bothered focusing on the keyboard guy, you'd think they were a quartet.

The crowd was into them! I could barely find a seat down low but I was by myself and wound up behind the 3rd base dugout, 2nd row. (all 7 of the work people I attended the game with with didn't stay). I was sorta being a detatched douchebag and enjoying it ironically but I got into "Roll with the Changes" I gotta admit it. That song really rocks.
