You Got a Call

So I get to work yesterday and someone hands me a message.
It says:
"Someone called to speak to you. His customer number is xxxxxxxxxx. I couldn't get his name. Bad connection. Call him".

So I go into the customer database, and the name of that customer is someone named-
Russell Martin.

Anyone else get any ribbing from Yankee fans yesterday?
Any of it clever?

Re: You Got a Call

A guy who works for me is a huge Yankee fan. He came into my office on Friday and asked if I wanted to bet on who'd win the series. I said no, the Mets were going to get swept.

He looked at me oddly, with that Yankee fan way of being unable to comprehend that you expect your own team to lose.

So on Monday morning, instead of being razzed, it was, "wow, you were right."

One of the two MFY fans walked into my office yesterday with a stupid grin and said "well I had a good baseball weekend." The other MFY fan didn't say a word.

I gave everyone the stock answer, that I found it surprising that all three games were cancelled due to rainouts and had never happened.

Unless blood is on the line, you gotta take that bet every time. I throw down a lunch bet every Philly series with a my Chase-loving co-workers. Makes for good relations and stand-up fanhood. Mutual respect grows, and self-respect flourishes.

I've never bet on the Mets, and likely never will. Maybe it's silly, but I like to keep my rooting interest pure.

Well, it's just a sandwich roll and a Fresca. I don't FEEL dirty.

I agree. Although I did not make a wager this time. It seems like wagering leads to more intelligent discussion of the merits/foibles of the games/teams than you'd normally get.

Maybe I'll wager on the next series.

I kind of have a general gambling aversion, I suppose.

Oh, I do too. I'm prone to any habit-forming behavior. And habit-forming, life-destructive is the worst.

Any gambling I do is in the spirit of staking stuff I don't mind giving away anyhow. And buying lunch for a co-worker is a pleasure, and actually takes the edge off any hard feelings over the loss. And graciously collecting on a lunch does the same I hope, for them.

Well, no. He's already acquired a condo in Palm Springs from our previous bets. Sometimes you have to draw the line.

I simply solve the problem by not associating with any Yanqui fans.

I got some mild ribbing from a MFY fan who works at the local supermarket, but it was good natured.
