Small-Time All-Time Team

Edgy MD

Dubiously saluting the Mets with the best careers at each position, with no regard whatsoever to their Mets performance, except that they all failed to achieve All-Time Mets status. That's the only disqualifier.

c: Yogi Berra
1b: Carlos Delgado
2b: Roberto Alomar
ss: Toughy --- Tony Fernandez, Gary Templeton, Roy McMillan, and Jim Fregosi all have cases.
3b: Ken Boyer?
lf: George Foster (sorry, Jason Bay)
cf: Willie F. Mays
rf: Um... Rusty Staub?

rhsp: Warren Spahn or Pedro Martinez
lhsp: Johan Santana or Frank Viola or Mickey Lolich?
lhrp: Billy Wagner
rhrp: Mike Marshall or Armando Benitez or Jeff Reardon?

Manager: Casey Stengel
GM: George Weiss or Bing Devine or Sandy Alderson

Eddie Murray?

Shawn Green, perhaps. Without thinking about it too much, I'd call it a tossup.

Indeed, yes.

Good call on Murray. Don't agree on Green, however.

I'd like to add Robin Ventura into the 3B discussion. His career numbers are very close to Boyer's, right down to the number of Gold Gloves.

Re: Small-Time Big-Time Team

Baseball Reference sez the most similar player to Ken Boyer, career-wise is Bobby Bonilla. Bonilla started 198 games at 3B as a Met. Just saying.

Excellent thoughts.

Jeff Kent over Alomar? We'll let the voters decide.

I suppose Joe Torre has to get mentioned at 3B as well.

Re: Small-Time All-Time Team

I can throw him into the vote certainly, but I'd guess that the plurality of his career value was earned at catcher.

And a lot of time at 1B as well for ol' Crater Face. Good point.

Frankie Rodriguez for RHRP?

Re: Small-Time All-Time Team

in '63, duke snider played 63 games in right, to 35 in left and 11 in center. i think that qualifies him for right field duty.

Mel Rojas for RP? Over 100 saves for the Expos before he wet the bed with the Mets.

Going over to BBref and looking at the stats, it looks like Fregosi hands down. On the other hand, I remember only Fregosi's Met years, so I reflexively think "suck" when I hear Jim Fregosi's name.

Re: Small-Time All-Time Team

Is there an easy way to make a list of Hall of Famers who have played at least one game for the Mets? That may be a good start for me.

Then that makes my outfield simple - Ricky, Willie and the Duke.
My 1B - Murray, because he pissed off so many apponents and sportswriters, but never a teammate.
ss- McMillan - because in his prime he was poetry in motion at short when it was still a defensive position.
2B - Kent - not exactly poetry in motion, but he could really hit. His best hit was on Barry Bonds, which puts him on my list.
3B - Boyer
C - Berra
SP- righty - Ryan
lefty - Spannie.

Yabbut, what we're crediting him for is his career. His career was not as a rightfielder.

Well then, I'll cast a right field vote for Ken Singleton.
I liked him.
