IToVT

Venus passes in front of the sun this evening and that's it until 2117.

Live webcast from NASA seems be the best option where I live because clouds are blocking both Venus and the sun.

If you have better weather where you live there are Six Ways to See the Transit of Venus.

Did you really pass up the opportunity to use the subject heading: 'There's a Little Black Spot on the Sun Today' ?!?

Yeah, I saw somebody use it on Facebook today and didn't want to be derivative.

Well in that case, I'll just play this instead:

I had no idea that this group was Dutch.
Of course I knew nothing about them except for this song so I'm not sure why I should have known that, but they were.

Re: IToVT

Swedes love making pop songs, they lovingly handcraft them like coo coo clocks or meatballs or whatever it is they make out there.

Go to your local IKEA.
You'll see everything else they make.

Don't kid yourself. IKEA crap is made in factories all over the world where labor can be exploited --- mostly in China.

I tuned to the link Willets provided, three guys draped in shadows talking excitedly about " seven hours of great programming ahead".....I didn't stick around.

But Shocking Blue is from the Netherlands, the nation that later gave us the Vengaboys.

Fortunately we won't have to revisit this thread for 104 years.

I turned it on last night and my son was sitting in my lap and we watched a few minutes of some guy talking about several different types of telescope. We agreed it was boring and switched to the Mets game.

So this thread has now touched off a contest of one-hit wonder Dutch bands:

Do you vote for the above 'Venus' by [u:lib8lji2]Shocking Blue[/u:lib8lji2]?

Or do you favor the skinny white boy trying desperately to sound like he's from the American south in 'Ma Belle Amie' by Dutch band [u:lib8lji2]Tee Set[/u:lib8lji2]

[youtube:lib8lji2]nWP_Md78mk8[/youtube:lib8lji2]

And any discussion of one-hit wonders from the Netherlands must include that early 1970s classic bombast of guitar, drums, whistling, flute, and yodeling -- yes, yodeling -- 'Hocus Pocus' by [u:lib8lji2]Focus[/u:lib8lji2]

[youtube:lib8lji2]NGaVUApDVuY[/youtube:lib8lji2]

Other entries in this contest will be accepted but only for Dutch-based bands. Don't go tryin' to sneak no Swedes in here now.

Re: IToVT

The aforementioned Vengaboys with "We Like to Party". Submitted for completionist sake as I don't expect anyone to vote for it or even click play if they wish to preserve their sanity.

The Dutch may do many things well but handcrafting pop songs is not one of them.

Re: IToVT

I think the Dutch are into metal and stuff. The Swedes dig the pop.

The Van Halen boys should count I think.

Re: IToVT

Only really recognized one name in the Wikipedia article on Dutch music: Bettie Serveert. Pretty sure this is the one we played in college:

Well, I recognized Vandenberg too, but don't know any of their stuff.
