Layla Piano Coda, sad, happy, indifferent?

Sad, reminds me of way too many times Murph simply said "We'll be back with the recap after this. 2 votes

Good for a things are changing for worse montage, ala what happens to most of the Lufthansa heist crew in Goodfellas. 4 votes

Happy, could signify the singer moving on from this crappy relationship he is singing about. 2 votes

Eric Clapton's iconic ballad to Patti Boyd is famous for it's nice piano coda playing out the last few minutes of the song.

Normally I always think of how through the 80s, and some of the early 90s, that piece was used under Bob Murphy sending it to a commercial after a loss, saying "We'll back back with the recap after this." With Kool & The Gang's "Celebration" playing under Murph's Happy Recap declarations.

And the demise of Henry Hill brings to mind the nice way it was used in the montage showing the various fates of the members of the Lufthansa heist crew and setting up Tommy's death in Goodfellas, another kind of telling that the piece is meant more of a sober piece of music.

Yet, interestingly, was chatting with someone in England over Facebook, who suggested the coda, a complete change musically from the rest of the hard guitar rocker, can be seen as a change in attitude for the singer. After being in this horrid and chaotic relationship, he is now content and calmer.

I don't know, I still feel like Murph is going to come back on the air in a few moments to give the thumbnail recap of how the Mets lost before sending it to the post game show.

I mean, it CAN be seen that way.

By someone who hasn't seen Goodfellas.

It tells me the best part of the song has just ended.

I like it, though I'm not a big Clapton guy (not a Clapper). Not sure of my musical read on it.

Little known fact: the guy who wrote that part of the song, Derek and the Dominoes/session drummer Jim Gordon, later went bat shit crazy and killed his mother with a hammer.

There appears to be quite a cleavage on the matter.

I saw D&D second keyboardist Bobby Whitlock at the old Lone Star Cafe about 30 years ago. He played the Layla coda -- just the coda -- as part of his set. As of now, the Whitlock songs are my faves on the Layla album, particularly Anyday and I Looked Away.

Heh, and am I'm apparently the only one on here that associates it, well that portion of the song, with it being the music that played under Murph following the final out of a Met loss.

Am I the only one that notices that sort of thing?

I kind of like the idea that a song can actually take a break from lyrics have a long instrumental segment.
It serves as a reminder of when even complete instrumentals were permitted to do things like get radio airplay and be counted on billboard charts and the like.

One of the greatest songs ever recorded. It always gets my attention and makes me a little nuts. Thanks for starting this thread.

My answer is d) all of the above.

I associate it first and foremost with the "Goodfellas" sequence. Having said that, the Derek and the Dominoes is one of my all time favorite albums, and Clapton wouldn't come anywhere close to it on any recording again after that time.

I love Layla. It's my ringtone.

The ending doesn't make me any of the above; it makes me reflective.

It's a good question Steve. It is a very emotional bit of music.

(e) I totally remember learning to play this on piano and wish I still played as much I should. (I should scrounge up the money to have this fricking thing tuned, at least.)
