IGT 77 6/28/12 Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

The Mets two buy low gamble signings of 2011 face off.

Chris Young versus Chris Capuano (9-2, 2.60ERA)

Re: IGT 77 6/28/12 Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

I hope we kick Capuano's ass tonight. I mean, I hope the Mets kick everyone's ass but geez, has any pitcher ever gotten more credit for as much solid mediocrity as Capuano gave us last year?

He gave up a million home runs, always made the bullpen work hard, had an ERA closer to 5 than 4.

One great game and an admirable make-good year returning from injury but that's about it.

eff you, Capuano, and all your friends in the media overestimating your alleged good year with the Mets.

Re: IGT 77 6/28/12 Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

His mediocre 2011 got him 2 years/$10M (2012-13), plus a 2014 option from the Dodgers. So far, it's working out for L.A..

The Mets only paid him $1.5M for one year in 2011. I think that it worked out OK for the Mets, too.

Yeah, he pitched like a 1.5 M pitcher and so far, he's pitched like a 5M guy for the Dodgers. But I can't see that lasting.

Re: IGT 77 6/28/12 Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

One one hand, good move by Alderson by not giving him a real contract off last year, but maybe he should've traded him or tried to extend him through this year in say July of last year?

It's certainly interesting that he signed both these guys and just let them walk and then resigned the one that didn't work out last year.

Capuano is the kind of depth signing I was hoping Alderson would make this offseason to limit the Schwinden/Batista/Hefner starts.

Yep. There's no chance I get more than four innings in before I bag. The only perk to the unbalanced schedule is that it minimizes the number of 10 PM starts for the Mets.

Re: IGT 77 6/28/12 Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

So, is Cedeño still cutting in on Murphy's PT or what?

Does Hairston's slam (which, I repeat, was a routine fly at Citi) further complicate the left field platoon? Because I mostly think that platoon should be pretty strict.

Re: IGT 77 6/28/12 Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

Hairston's platoon differential is substantial and based on an extensive career-long sample size. And, at his age, it ain't going to change. So, I wouldn't start him against RHers, especially when we've got a talented young LHed OFer whose upside is still to be determined sitting on the bench. And Cedeno is a defensive sub, not someone you sit your starting 2bman to play, especially when said 2bman is coming off a 2hr/4rbi game.

I agree with you on both counts, but Hairston's platoon diff was better last year, and he has been excellent this year.

And Murphy had been largely batless for a month, and his glove remains mostly a liability.

So I understand if Jerry might be tempted to play around a little bit. with the lineup. Hope he doesn't. He's hopefully past where he has to provide too much coverage for Torres.

I really think he's done a good job adding to the PT of improving guys and diminishing the PT of slumping guys, while not burying any body.

The kicker is that he's virtually the opposite of everything his father was: Right-handed, huge, slow, no glove to speak of but with big-time power.

Three legacies in the LAD line-up tonight when you add in Tony Gwynn Jr., and then for added attraction they've got Jerry Hairston Jr. on the bench.

I've thought that from time to time. Davis' 90-plus-fastball-chucking arm may get some run... but I'm not so sure it would make much of a dent in our right-field situation-- Davis is marginally slower than Duda, isn't he?-- while worsening that at first.

Davis is slower than several of my deceased uncles. Duda seemed to handle grounders well during his time at first last year, but didn't look like he had mastered the scoop of bad throws. This is based on a very small sample size, plus the fact that I had pretty much stopped paying attention by that point last year.

He can't be that slow. Speed has nothing to do with Dudas problem in right. Sure, he might reach more than Davis but he don't reach the ones he should get if he wanted the ball more. Its like when its hit to him for a second he just watches it, then decides, shit, that's my ball, I gotta catch that.

If Davis can shag flies and has an arm that matches Dudas I don't think we lose aside from having Dudas glove at first instead of Ikes.

He's country, right?

I vote for some vaguely-creepy-religious, you're-about-to-die Statler Brothers shit, like "In The Beginning" or "Lord I'm Coming Home."

Re: IGT 77 6/28/12 Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

Pen numbers from last night:

2-2/3 IP -- Byrdak 0.2, Rauch 1.0, Parnell 1.0,
1 walk -- intentional by Byrdak, after the passed ball moved up the runner he inherited
1 hit -- off Rauch, that swinging/slapping bunt thing that the guy fucked up but got away with anyway right before he was erased on the sweet DP

A few more nights like that every now and then from the much-maligned pen crew and this might actually become a decent team.

That DP, btw, upped the NYM win pct figure from 61% to 82%, the biggest jump from a single play either way in the entire game. So that play earned both difficulty and style points, even from the Romanian judge (doing a little warming up for the Olympics here)

Anyone know a site that does team double splits? like "Mets bullpen in June"? Although they're only 13-13 in June despite having the second best team ERA in the majors.

BB-Ref

Go to the Mets 2012 stat page - click not just on Pitching but Pitching splits - scroll down to reach 'Months' section and see not just where they have Apr, May, June stats, but also each month's GS & GR (games started, games relieved) broken out

Pen ERA: Apr = 5.02; May = 5.82; June = 3.90
The penners are, however, 0-5 in June so maybe those fewer runs allowed aren't always coming at the best of times (although W/L stats for relievers are notoriously inaccurate)

thanks. right, I was looking to compare that to the league average for June, which I couldn't seem to find.

sorta funny, they won in the first two months but with the best ERA in June it might be there worst month to date.

So now, from the main page of BB-Ref, click on the pitching splits link right under the National League Heading (just above the standings) and you'll get identical breakdowns only for league-wide stats.
You can also switch that to MLB-wide in addition to NL only or AL only.

So you slept the peaceful sleep of a man whose team was pitching a perfect game. Nice.

Thanks, I love the site but sometimes I find it a little clunky to navigate. I kept clicking the pitching drop-down but kept going to reliever pitching instead of splits.

anyhow, 4.26 is the reliever league average for June, whereas the Mets are at 3.9. given how every storyline seems to trash the bullpen it's actually been mostly okay.

I did, in fact, go to bed operating under the assumption that the final score would be 1-0 and a no hitter. Except it would be by Chris Young and an army of firemen as he can't throw 135 pitches without falling apart.

Young has now exceeded my expectations for 2012 innings pitched.
