No. Bad karma is patriotic hats forced on us by MLB and Sunday nights on ESPN.

I just wish the Mets billed themselves as "Los Metros" in Spanish. "Los Mets" sounds dumb, though not as dumb as, say, "Los Suns." Let's work with an actual translation.

"Los Cowboys" = bad
"Los Vacqueros" = good

"Los Islanders" = bad
"Los Isleños" = good

Re: IGT 7/6/2012 CHI @ NYM: Bring The Wood

Why do the Spanish heritage jerseys have to say "Los"? The American tops don't say "The" Mets.

Re: IGT 7/6/2012 CHI @ NYM: Bring The Wood

Spanish just kind of works that way. Nouns sort of almost have to have articles. English speakers say, "Family is important," but Spanish speakers say, "La familia es importante." (Mets fans say, "Don't trade Familia.")

Salute to the Brewers for doing it right.

Yes, but Mexican League teams don't include the article, either on their jerseys or, I think, in their official names. Pericos de Puebla, for example:

Re: IGT 7/6/2012 CHI @ NYM: Bring The Wood

Good point. I guess we're just an uncreative and patronizing country that thinks we can solve all Spanish marketing problems with a definite article.

(The seemingly pointless but somehow necessary article thing is more common with abstract Spanish nouns like "La Paz" and "El Derecho" and "La Verdad.")

but they are proper nouns. You wouldn't say Henry was Enrique when he's over the border. His given name is still Henry. You can't buy a Manzana iPod in Spain.

I think the entire concept of wearing a different jersey is silly anyway, but losmets.com seems cooler than like español.mets.com It's about creating a spanish presense of Mets. adding the article is a tiny part of a marketing presence towards spanish speaking fans.

GM famously ran into this problem in the '60's when they tried to sell the Chevy Nova in Mexico.

Of course, 'No va' translates to 'It doesn't go', which is a great name for a car.

You are what you call yourself.

If teams want to reframe their names in the cause of Latino outreach, I think it would be more poetic and meaningful and substantial and exciting for teams to market themselves under actual translations rather than misbegotten mixed constructions like "Los Red Sox." I see that you disagree.

Right, not what others call you.

I think it loses something in translation. The Islanders are not residents of an island. The Mets are not a densely populated city. The Cubs are not actually baby bears. It transcends language. They've built an identity attached to the one name.
