We should trade for him, and release Bay. Or not trade for him and release Bay. Thoughts?

I'd trade Bay for a bag of balls. Just to ensure that Hairston and Newy and eventually Baxter play more. I guess what I'm sayin' is that I'd release Bay. This is where you miss Bobby V's sharp eye for talent: Bobby V could look a player over and in five minutes, know whether he's done or not and the fuck with the sample sizes.

Quentin's a right-handed hitter, $7 M contract is up after this season and the Pads are going nowhere. I think the Mets need a right-handed bat who can play either left field or second base. He's not so old that he couldn't be the kinda guy who'd be worth getting a look-see prior to his free agency.

Den Dekker or Nieuwenhuis, maybe. I was thinking that Doodoo would be an especially fair price but might kill the need from our perspective.

Don't think I want to give up much for a guy coming back from knee surgery, having no clue how serious it was or anything I do know from listening to Fran Healy how important knees are in swinging the bat.

Den Dekker would be too steep for a free-agent to be, I think. Plus, there'll be bats that could be had for less soon enough....Soriano could come cheap, and apparently the Cubs would pay major freight. Shin-Shoo Choo anyone? (perhaps the Tribe could even send us back Joe Smith, or Matt LaPorta if we sent say, Murphy and Davis). Quentin is intruiging but the injury and potential short-term part of this deal worry me

I'd be willing to give up very little...and nothing off the ML roster. If the Mets are buyers, they should be should be looking for additions and not upgrades. I'd rather get some bullpen help for cash and take our chances with the offense we have than give up anything that may help in the future. I'm all for Quentin on the dirty-cheap.

And isn't the "short-term" part of this deal what's appealing about Quentin? He's an affordable rental at the right price for a short-term need, even without any Pod kick-in.

I still don't think the Mets will be serious contenders deep into the season, so I'm not in favor of them trading real prospects for a rental. If we're going to trade youth, I'd rather get a guy like Hunter Pence, who may also be available, and is under control through 2013. But my preferred approach for the remainder of this season would be to try to bolster the bullpen and not deal any blue chips.

(2) taking Hairy and Nieuie's appearances in left (3) taking Hairston's appearances in left, but pushing him to center, where he steals time from Andres Torres? (4) taking Hairston's and Nieuies appearances in left, but pushing them both to center, where they steal time from Andres Torres? Because what he's worth should be weighed in the context of who he's displacing.
