Mets skipper Terry Collins: We need Jason Bay's bat in the lineup

Jason Bay and his .184 batting average will return to the Mets lineup as soon as possible, which may be right after the All-Star break.

"When he comes back, we will insert him in the lineup," Terry Collins said. "We need his bat in the lineup. We hope when he gets back he's ready to play."

Collins is expecting Bay to start playing games in Port St. Lucie on Sunday, after participating in drills for a couple of days. The plan is for Bay to then move to Triple-A Buffalo "for a few games and then come back (to the Mets)," Collins said.

Re: The (Ugh!) Baywatch

If Bay's return keeps Nieuwenhuis off the field against LHPs [.167/.275/.217], sits Duda every once in a while vs the same [.217/.270/.311], and reduces Terry's once-a-week or so temptation to put Turner on 1B, then maybe it's not such a bad thing.

Re: The (Ugh!) Baywatch

Nieuwenhuis needs to go back to AAA to play everyday and try to cut down on his Adam Dunn-like strikeout numbers. Bay's return sets this up and could possibly help the team against LHP.

Bay had a 900+ OPS against lefties last year. I think the concussion and multiple injuries are the perfect reason to slide him into something closer approximating a platoon role. of course.. I know we love what Hairston has done, but Terry has been using him too much against righties too. Bay's probably/maybe/could be better than that, although maybe you give Torres a couple of those starts.

Tejada
Turner
Wright
Hairston
Davis
Bay
Torres
Thole
Dickey

is probably pretty good against lefties. alternating in Murphy and Duda (and probably Nickeas) into that sometime.

That's not fair. J. Jonah Jameson had a thinly-veiled, ill-conceived agenda that he rarely gave a rest, and... um... Ashie's from Jersey.

vs LHers:

ss - Ruben Tejada (.901)
2b - Ronny Cedeno (.852)
3b - David Wright (1.017)
Rf - Scott Hairston (.952)
Lf - Jason Bay (.776)
Cf - Andres Torres (.804)
1b - Daniel Murphy (.628) - he's better defensively at 1b than Turner, and equivalent offensively against LHers.
C - Josh Thole (.601) - Nickeas is just too dreadful a hitter to play even in a platoon.

Bench:
Justin Turner (.606)
Lucas Duda (.588)
Mike Nickeas (.541)
Ike Davis (.526)
Kirk Nieuwenhuis (.492)

no notice in the game day notes either, where they usually say 'expected to be activated for tonight's game'

just this:

JASON BAY: Went 0-2 with two walks last night for Buffalo (AAA) of
the International League vs. Toledo...Bay played the entire game in
leftfield...Bay is 3-10 (.300) with two runs scored and four walks in three
rehabilitation games with the Bisons...Bay was 0-6 with two walks in two
rehabilitation games with St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League...Bay
has been on the Disabled List after suffering a concussion on June 15.

Somebody posted something to the UMDB today that matches something that I've noticed myself. Doesn't Jason Bay look thin (at least in his face) since his return? He looks almost frail. Or maybe like he's aged a decade or two. I don't know. Anyone else notice this?

Yes. Combed back on top, with a little flourish in the back. IOW, the Roland Orzabal.

Re: The (Ugh!) Baywatch

Part of the frailty of Bay may simply be that he was ordered to avoid heavy workouts during his convalescence, and he has some catching up to do.

Although there may not be enough time left in his career for him to catch up.

Well, that probably has something to do about it. But we're way beyond the excuses part. The Mets are doing their due diligence. They're going to get play him regularly and give him a reasonable shot to actually hit he ball across a meaningful* sample.

But he might not make it back to New York.

I didn't suggest any excuses. It was noted that he looked thinner, and I theorized why he might.

I must've missed that one, or I would've chimed in then. My thoughts on Bay are that it doesn't matter what/who/why/how, he has to produce now or he's gone. I thought he was brought back too fast last time, and probably this time too, but it ultimately doesn't matter. He's had sooo many chances.

of course, if the Mets don't go on a real winning streak, the season will be effectively over and not just almost definitely over, so there might be little reason to cut him just for the sake of cutting him. It's not like any of the other outfielders besides Torres a bit, are deserving much playing time. It's only another month that he's eating a roster spot.

Heck, the two outfielders they just demoted had better stats than Bay.

Has he amassed enough at bats for his 2013 contract to vest?
If not, wouldn't it make more sense to cut him now?
Or is there a golden parachute clause?

Oh, there is no option for 2013. He is fully signed for next year.

The option is for 2014, but he is nowhere near on pace with his ABs for it to kick in...nor will the Mets allow him to get there next year if he is still on the roster.

2014 option guaranteed with 600 PAs in 2013 or 500 PAs in both 2012, 2013

vest is basically off the table. Would need 600 AB next year and even if he bounces back to Boston-Bay and stays healthy it probably won't get that.

I doubt he gets cut, since you're really only saving a month of a roster spot until rosters expand. I imagine though, if he goes hitless, or like 2/30 on the rest of this road trip, they might decide just to cut him. Probably needs to be correlated with like Duda hitting 8 HR for Buffalo or something.

Or, if the Mets go 10 for the next 12 and miraculously climb back in the race despite his struggles. Then you almost have to cut him because he hurts chances of winning the rest of the games needed to actually climb bck into the race. (Mets face the Braves on August 10th. They're 9 losses behind. If they made up significant ground that could be a d-Day point) Obviously their are other teams to climb over, but one of them is the Giants. Two others are the Reds and Nats(probably not the Nats) right after the Braves. If they're desperately making a push and need every last drop of offense..maybe they just dump him (or phantom-DL?)
