IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Because it's Dickey Day.

Because it'll be fun watching new oblique strains silently develop in Nat hitters' haunches.

Because those interns sitting in front of you just won't... sit... down.

Because it was our burger first.

Because all of these replica hats and jerseys are brand fucking new.

Because the only time you should fear a "Gio" is when you're riding in one.

Because it's time. LGM.

Re: IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

Batista after last night's game (quoted by Adam Rubin):

"Our team is going through a bad stretch right now," Batista said. "But my personal belief is we're way better than our numbers are. Baseball is living proof that who you might not expect might be there in October. I know a lot of people didn't expect us to be as good as we have this year. But I believe this team is way, way better than what it's been playing. And regardless of the fact what other people might think, October is not here yet. We'll see at the end of the season. ...

"Right now they're playing good baseball, but I don't believe they're a better team than us," Batista continued, referring to the Nats. "They're playing great baseball. But better team? I believe we're the better team. We just have to play as we're supposed to. Every team goes through a bad stretch, from the greatest to the worst. I remember I told Terry two month ago: 'I haven't seen a team better than us.' ... We just have to believe how good we are and just go out there and perform. I believe we are the best team in baseball. We just have to play like one. That's what we're not doing."

I appreciate his confidence in the team but how about shutting up after "they" beat "us" two days in a row.

The Nationals will designate Rick Ankiel for assignment to create roster space for Drew Storen, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter).

How about signing Ankiel and sending Nieuwenhuis down so he can play every day and hopefully cut down on his strikeouts?

Re: IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

Nooey is 8 for his last 65 (.123), with 2 HR, 4 RBI, and 26 Ks. When a veteran has a stretch like this you expect him to come out of it. When a rookie does, it might be time for him to get back to a level where he can excel and regain his CAHNfidence.

Ankiel is not a savior, but if he has a bit of motivation he can be useful in a platoon and as a defensive replacement.

Re: IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

The flaw in swapping Ankiel for Nieuwenhuis is who goes when Baxter returns? That might be resolved if the Mets become "sellers" and perhaps Hairston or Turner is traded.

Re: IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

DFA doesn't make him a free agent, however. The Nats still own his rights for 10 days and can negotiate a trade, though leverage is obviously compromised. I'm fine with the notion of farming out Nieuwie and gaining Ankiel. We've suited up plenty of other veterans of PED suspensions.

Long day playing hooky for me. Mets and Nats by day, Squeeze and B52s (they dropped the apostrophe in 2008) by night.

I'd do it to just to improve until the point when Baxter returns. If Ankiel isn't doing much, off with his head. If he's a revelation, that's one of those good decisions to have to make, as the cliche goes.

Torres beats out a Lombardozzi double-clutch* for an infield hit.

Then David goes Full Sugar on Gonzalez's first pitch.

*How hasn't anyone on the Nats staff talked to him about that? That's almost given the Mets four infield hits in the first two games, by my (likely incomplete) count.

There were a lot of times in 2007 and 2008 when the Mets needed to close out a series sweep to really build a comfort zone in case they struggled a bit down the stretch and didn't do it. Hopefully this is similar, just in reverse.

The Nationals GM said that they released Ankiel rather than a reliever when activating Storen because they play a double-header on Saturday.

LWFS: True! I think that Davey accepts that you will lose some, this is a loss, so why burnout the bullpen, especially with 4 games against the 2d place team this weekend.

MGIM: the President's Race used to be a big deal but it's not anymore except for kids and tourists. The PA guys says "It's time for the main event!" which makes me wonder about the import of the game I'm there to see. The predictability of Teddy losing grew tiresome two seasons ago.

TotG:

[list][*]Shocked to see Dickey pitching into the eighth. The magic wasn't there today, but neither were the walks. The guts were, though.[/*:m]
[*]Also surprised Terry didn't pull any starters besides Hairston. Thought for sure Wright and Thole wouldn't finish the game.[/*:m]
[*]I don't know if the heat helped it or what, but Wright's first homer was like vintage Piazza --- drive that kep' climbing.[/*:m]
[*]Wright's glove was magnetic all day.[/*:m]
[*]I don't know if Torres is going to Tejada school or what, but he is not getting cheated these days. Having some really good at-bats.[/*:m]
[*]The idea that nobody in the bullpen isn't cutting it, so go with each guy for one batter --- that's vintage Jerry action by Terry. I dinna think that's the answer. Ramirez deserved to stick around if nobody else.[/*:m]
[*]Don't know if the runner was safe on that grounder to second in the ninth, but Turner really didn't charge.[/*:m]
[*]That hit-by-pitch by Parnell was funny. He gets ahead with the curve, and I say, "OK, this time come up and in" --- plunk!*[/*:m]
[*]Encouraging to see the Nats swapped out some starters, and so had the last guy on their bench up with two outs in the ninth.[/*:m]
[*]Not encouraging enough.[/*:m]
[*]It woulda been nice to finish this one like we started, but I'll sure take it.[/*:m][/list:u]

*Or as ceetar put it:

pitch 'em in Bobby.

wait, maybe not that much in.

Think Davey's kicking himself for pulling the 'chute a bit too soon on this one?

Well, it's not like Flores is much of a bat. But pulling Zimmerman for DeRosa is giving up a lot of offense.

Re: IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

He also pulled LaRoche.
Think of how all that would have looked had Harper's AB w/bases loaded in the 8th continued the inning. He wouldn't even have had to hit a GS (even though I know that's what we were all thinking) but if his bloop that Nieuwy caught on the run dropped in instead Davey would have been within 2 or 3 runs, with runners on, and with the 3 & 4 slots coming up, but his actual 3 & 4 hitters already in the shower.

And to think that just a couple of days ago some were calling a stolen base attempt in the 2nd inning of a scoreless game "over-managing".

Re: IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

Good thing we built up a big lead early yesterday.

After 5 full innings the score was 9-1

- The Mets sent just 13 more men to the plate for the remainder of the game, and not only did just one of them reach base (Turner's 7th inning double) but only 2 others even got the ball out of the infield (FOs by Nieuwenhuis & Bay). And if you want to back that up to the final two hitters in the 5th -- Dickey's GO & Tejada's K which followed the one-out 1B & 2B by Turner & Thole -- then 12 of the final 15 failed to clear the IF

- The Nats, on the other hand, sent 24 more hitters to the plate starting in their half of the 6th and 12 of them reached base. Now they weren't exactly smacking the ball all over the park seeing as how that parade included 3 infield hits plus the Wright error and a HBP, but still.

Re: IGT 7/19, @ Nationals: A Quick Turnaround

Did I hear Terry correctly on the post-game: the Nationals are a good bunting team so they tailor their IF so that bunts stay fair. If he thinks that, and I wouldn't put it past Davey and management that went out of its way to get the 1st round pick two years in a row, then did the Mets bunt at all? Is that why Torres had a few IF hits?

No one ever talks about this stuff. Torres is probably the only one (well, Valdy) with the real speed to make bunting a thing though.

The Mets should (they might for all I know) let the infield grass grow a little longer so it slows down the ball and gives guys that extra split second to make plays defensively.

The best part about afternoon wins is watching the encore on SNY at night.

Me: Ok, I'll let you watch just one more inning before your shower. I have a feeling David Wright is going to hit a HR.

Ryan: Really? I hope so, but - OMG DAD! HOW DID YOU KNOW? WOW!!!!
