Fargo?

The Daily News has a new contest promotion, where the winner can win an "ultimate baseball vacation" in... Fargo, North Dakota?

WTF? How many New Yorkers dream of going to North Dakota to see minor league baseball?

(Confession: I wouldn't at all mind winning that trip, but still, it seems very strange seeing these full-page promotions in a New York paper.)

Re: Fargo?

Is is a shot in the dark from deep in the recesses of my memory banks somewhere..

wasn't Mickey Mantle? (Or Joe Dimaggio? I mix those two up sometimes..) born in Fargo? Yankee orgins to this contest?

edit: Either it's not recorded or I'm mixing him up with either Chris Coste or Gary Serum.

edit again: checked wikipedia. it was Maris. who apparently doesn't make the baseball-almanac page and Serum doesn't make the Fargo wiki page.

I thought Maris was from South Dakota.

Re: Fargo?

Two big leaguers born in Fargo: Christ Coste and Gary Serum.

(Gary Serum sounds like a made-up name.)

Re: Fargo?

I went to the Rockland Boulders game last night in their relatively new ballpark. Not a bad little place to watch a game. Mrs. Solo got an email alert to a special deal: 4 tix, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas, and 1 popcorn (only 1?) for $30. Oh, and we were in the second row behind the dugout. Very cool, and a bonus Gustavo Chacin sighting!

But I have no idea wtf the trip to Fargo is all about.

When you figure that you can do the baseball thing in Fargo and then combine it with a side trip to the Raccoon Lodge Cemetery in Bismark, well then, it becomes too good an opportunity to pass up.

Re: Fargo?

Looking it up, I see there's a Roger Maris Museum and a Maury Wills Museum.

That would a be a fun thing to do, actually --- build a museum dedicated to outstanding ballplayers not quite good enough for the Hall of Fame.

The Halls of the Very Good, but not quite so good as the Really Good.
It lacks a certain something...

Re: Fargo?

It would be awesome and you know it. We'd get a ton of traffic, as long as we built it really close to something better.

Hey, look! It's Dave Steib!

I wanna do this contest but I'm afraid I will win 2nd prize.

Re: Fargo?

Yeah, second prize sucks. Tickets to a game in North Dakota, but you have to get there on your own.

"So, uh, Margie, you hear about this contest?"

"No, Mikey, what's this all about huh?"

"Well, ya, they got these New Yorkers, you know, they're pretty good and all, and they come here and see a Redhawks game and stuff."

"Oh yah?"

"Yah! And it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, you know, because they have all kinds of baseball back East that they could go and check out, without having to fly on a plane or come to Brainerd here and be surrounded by us hayseeds."

"Yah, that's right! They could just go upstate for that!"

"Yah."
