Harvey is real and not a figment of our imagination. Get a nap, it's a 9:40 start.

Or maybe 46.

clearly not getting 43. If he wants to go one up sequentially he'll skip Bay and have 45 or 46 depending on if he wants to leave 45 for Wheeler.

I doubt the Mets will let him flip it to 34 even if Pelfrey might be done as a Met.

He could double it and take 86, but that wouldn't lessen the pressure on him ;-)

my bet's on 46. should we do a poll?

He's reached the point that we are no longer concerned with potential and are now concerned with production. Those are the only numbers I care about.

45 was already issued this year to Hampson, and although it seems like a longshot he returns it would nominally belong to him I think. 46 same with Acosta. No way do they give up 34 with Pelfrey hurting and all.

I'm thinking 36 (issued in spring to Chuck James who I think has been released) or maybe 33 (formerly belonging to Rottino).

I like 36. He seems more like a 40 to me, but I think that's taken. 39 would be good too, if available.

Alas, 70 may be the new 30, but according to Rubin Harvey is not the new 70. Permanent number TBA.

OE: It's 33, DiComo says. JCL wins the Vinnie Rottino bobblehead.

It was Rubin that reported 70 to begin with.

Nice one. Here he is sad.

Is that a "The Office" bobblehead in his locker?

Right. He warmed up in a spare 70 jersey while waiting for his bespoke jersey to come back from Mohan's.

70 was his spring training one, so they probably already had that BP one made for him. worked out perfectly.

but fine, 33.

Yes, definitely the unmistakable guise of Dwight K Schrute.

Re: Harvey

Ugh. I guess that Aniston and Jordan are fine but (Serby talking to Harvey)...

Q: Three dinner guests?
A: Jennifer Aniston: Derek Jeter; Michael Jordan.
Q: Why Jeter?
A: He was my idol growing up. I loved the way that Paul O’Neill played. And I loved how everyone respected Derek Jeter for the person that he was and the stand-up guy that he was ...the hard worker and the gamer, and he did it day in and day out, never showed anything, never did anything bad in the media or anything like that. People looked up to him everywhere he went. He was like every kid’s idol growing up. Just getting a chance to talk to him and see how he handled everything and how he went about his business, I think that would be helpful.

Mets need to start negotiating a new clause in all their minor-league contracts:

"1. At no time shall the player, during interviews with members of the media, during games, at spring training, or at any other such time the player knows or should reasonably know that cameras or reporters are present, make remarks (other than disparaging remarks) concerning Derek Jeter, the Steinbrenner family, or any other members of the MFYs.

2. Never give an interview to Mike Francessa"

our #1 SS pick did the same thing. And this is why we/I lambast the media for it's Jeter-sucking drivel, because it tricks these guys (and presumably non-baseball playing kids who grow up to be MFY-loving douches) into idolizing him. It's like they think "Hmm, it's NY, i should pick some really awesome NY baseball player to talk about when I'm asked"

Inside Matt Harvey's Mets debut
By Cody Derespina

Before the season began, the 2012 Minor League Baseball Analyst gave this description of then-Mets prospect Matt Harvey:

“Strong, athletic righty was the seventh pick in the '10 draft. He has a plus 92-95 mph FB that tops out at 98 with good life. He also throws a plus 82-84 mph SL, a CU, and a CB. He has worked hard to develop a more consistent release point and the command improved. Continued progress could mean top-of-the-rotation stuff.”
The Analyst pegged his potential as a No. 1 starter and gave him a 9D designation, meaning he had a 30 percent chance to become an elite player.

Harvey's start against the Diamondbacks on Thursday did nothing to calm those expectations.
Harvey struck out 11, gave up three hits and three walks in 5.1 scoreless innings. His fastball reached 98 mph three times and was still hitting 95 mph in the sixth inning.

Here's the inning-by-inning breakdown of his average fastball velocity:

1 – 95.81 (11 thrown)
2 – 95.58 (12 thrown)
3 – 95.53 (15 thrown)
4 – 95.30 (13 thrown)
5 – 93.25 (8 thrown)
6 – 93.53 (13 thrown)

He threw six different pitches according to MLB.com's pitch/FX data:

Four-seam fastball: Harvey threw 72 of these, by far the most of any pitch on Thursday. Of the 44 strikes he threw with his fastball, 10 were called strikes, 13 were swinging strikes, 18 were foul balls and three came on balls in play. He struck out eight batters with the fastball, two looking. Only one batter managed to get a hit off the heater, Aaron Hill's line drive single with one out in the third.

Two-seam fastball: Harvey threw two of these, one went for a ball and the other was lined for a double.
Cutter: Just one cutter was thrown, an 89-mph pitch that Paul Goldschmidt pulled foul in the sixth. Harvey came back with a 91-mph fastball on the next pitch to strike Goldschmidt out.

Slider: Harvey threw 23 sliders, 14 for strikes. Only two were put in play—a fly out and a pop out—and he struck out three batters with sliders, all swinging.

Change-up: Harvey threw five change-ups, the only strikes were balls put in play: an infield hit in the first inning, a pop out and a ground out. After the game, manager Terry Collins said he'd like to see Harvey throw more change-ups in his next start.
Curveball: Harvey threw three curves, two for strikes, both of which were called.
