Freakin' Rutgers - It's On! College Football 2012

Today D-Dad and I bought tickets to see the Scarlet Knights play in Piscataway on October 27th. This will be the first regular season Rutgers game that we'll attend, and I'm already psyched!

Re: Freakin' Rutgers - It's On! College Football 2012

CBS's taling head picks RU for 2nd in the Big East..Phil Steele has them with best defense and a third in conference.

2. Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights have defense set. The line will have four-year starter Scott Vallone paving the way for Darius Hamilton -- New Jersey's top-ranked prospect in 2012. The linebackers have Big East Defensive Player of the Year Khaseem Greene, four-year starter Steve Beauharnais, and the secondary is headlined by Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon -- both all-conference picks in 2011. The questions on offense begin under center, where Kyle Flood says he will name either Chas Dodd or Gary Nova the starting quarterback "7-10 practices" from the season opener at Tulane on Sept. 1. At running back, Jawan Jamison won the starting role from touted recruit Savon Huggins last season, but there is no guarantee he has the position locked up in 2012. Wide receivers Brandon Coleman and Mark Harrison were productive opposite Mohamed Sanu, but need to step up in the absence of the Big East's all-time reception leader

Flood's first practice is tomorrow. Make no mistake, he is a take no shit guy.

Didn't have any faith Cuse was gonna win that game until there were maybe 5 minutes left. Strong showing by the SB running game, although SU was able to break a few big runs themselves.

If that TE (Martinez?) had made that wide open TD catch in the 1st quarter, Cuse might be 0-3 right now.

Nassib, strange as it sounds, is obviously the best SU QB in the past decade. Quick release, nice arm... guys just have to catch the ball. This team has some talented parts, but it seems like they have yet to put that talent together as a team.

SU special teams are a goddamn joke.

Re: Freakin' Rutgers - It's On! College Football 2012

Syracuse's D was pathetic in the first half. Maybe Marrone explained to them at halftime that if they lost this game he'd probably get fired because something finally got them going.

And the offense? Sure SU was moving the ball and eventually won by 11 and covered, but 2 missed field goals (one chip shot) and TWO goal line stops from Stony Brook?! Inexcusable.

Lots of my Syracuse peeps are saying this program is headed in the right direction but I've yet to buy into that because frankly I haven't seen it.

Stony Brook is a good, tough team but an FBS school that's 'headed in the right direction' should have blown them right out if the Dome and Syracuse certainly did not do that.

Isn't Syracuse "giving up" on football to play ACC hoops.

Im sure the Orange will make more money but I dont get it. BC made the move and they are the doormat in hoops and football.

Au contraire mon fr่re.

The conference move was all about football and the money that comes with it.

The thinking is that joining with the ACC will - first and foremost - bring in a LOT more money to the athletic department and school as a whole. A chunk of that money is apparently earmarked to
significantly upgrade the football facilities.

Playing hoops in the ACC is nice but all things being equal, fans, students and alumni would've rather stayed in the Big East. Not being part of the Big East Tournament in March at MSG is a huge loss. Also losing the rivalries with Georgetown, UConn, Villanova and St. John's are really devastating.

BC was never the hoops program that Syracuse was so that comparison really doesn't work. In terms of staying (or actually 'becoming') competitive in football, all the signs are there that SU's experience participating in the ACC will be a lot different. First - whether its visible or not right now, the football program really is on an upswing. The recruiting has ben much better since Marrone took over and there is a general sense of positivity surrounding the football team. This combined with the promise of those new facilities, having the south opened up to recruiting because of the ACC and Rutgers and UConn staying in the floundering Big East - for now - all bodes well for the future of Orange football.

Hoops? Losing the BET and the rivalries is a bummer but competing against UNC and Duke certainly won't hurt. There's also the fact that they'll still be playing Pitt and Notre Dame regularly, get to renew the rivalry with BC and become reacquainted with former Big East members Miami and Va. Tech. Also - plenty of rumors swirling that Notre Dame will in fact become a fulltime football member sooner rather than later. That move will necessitate adding a 16th school to the conference. Most likely that would be either UConn, Rutgers or Temple with UConn supposedly on the inside track. All current Big East members.

So no, Syracuse is not giving up on football to play ACC hoops. Hoops should be fine, football should get better and Lacrosse? With the addition of Notre Dame you now have possibly the most dominating conference in any college sport ever.

Yes, I'm aware. I still don't understand why football and basketball conferences have to be aligned. The Big East was a great basketball conference but it's been torn apart. You'd think these geniuses could make another mountain of money by aligning teams for basketball as well as football.

The program hasn't turned around as quickly as I'd like, but considering the depths it had sunk to, I can't complain too much. I feel like he's done a better job than his predecessor at pretty much everything.

Which means USF lost another -- "and the third in which the defense has given up a 75-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes to give up the lead," the Tampa Bay Times helpfully reminds its readers. Bulls were up 23-3 at the half, bowed, 37-36.

In Orwellian/Horwitzian fashion, USF's official site's headline gushes, "USF Offense Shines in 37-36 Loss to Orange."

If you'll excuse me, I have to go boo a couple of my t-shirts.

A win like this makes all those early losses that much more infuriating. Cuse is still in the bowl picture, I guess.

So now that the latest indestructible, unbeatable team (Alabama in this case) shows itself to be beatable, does that show they couldn't compete in the NFL as some claimed recently, or does this merely mean that Texas Tech can also?

"It was Texas A&M" -- Eh, all those Texas schools are interchangeable in my mind

"ESPN still can say that the SEC is more powerful than the NFL." -- And they'd still be just as wrong.

Actually, as far as I know anyway, it was only coach Steve Spurrier who said it this year about 'Bama & the NFL. Most voices almost immediately disagreed with him but it did make the question the #1 topic of conversation among the sports chattering classes for like the next two days.
But, this case aside, this same thing happens virtually every time there's a hot or supposedly dominant team in either college football or hoops. Someone, or in some cases many someones, opine that said flavor of the year team could beat ("compete with" or "make a good showing against", or however they want to phrase it) pro teams and they really sound stupid while doing so. The thing is, since the voices within college sports are more interested in acting as promoters for their sport rather than actual reporters on it, it serves their purpose to every once in a while reanimate the myth even if only to gently shoot it down.

Re: Freakin' Rutgers - It's On! College Football 2012

The Big Ten is presently consists of 12 teams. The Big 12 I believe has 10 teams.

Now the PAC-12 was originally the PAC-8 when it had 8 teams, then added 2 teams and became the Pac-10. It then added 2 more teams and now calls itself the PAC-12. You gotta respect that.

I suppose I can understand the confusion if the two 'BIG's started changing their names to more accurately reflect the amount of teams in its conference, and I can understand the cache that comes with the name 'BIG TEN' as well as the brand recognition, but perhaps its time to bite the bullet and do something.

The Big Ten though actually has. They lessened the emphasis on the 'TEN' in their name at least in the logo - - and people are starting to refer to the conference as simply 'The Big'.

It's the Big 12 that's gonna have the problem. But then again maybe not. All they have to do is add 2 more teams and -BAM - they're right back where they started.

Oh and P.S. - Syracuse 6-5 and bowl eligible for the second time in three years. Pretty amazing after the bad start and several disastrous losses this season. With Temple up next week, its a good possibility that the Orange go 7-5 and 5-2 in the Big East.

Pretty good for a team picked to finish last or next to last in the conference.

Remember back when the post office tried to go to the nine-digit zip code and, in order to sell it to folks as user friendly, they took to calling it 'Zip+5' as if that somehow made it easier to swallow than learning nine digits?
Well the football conferences should take a cue from that and go maybe, in this case, to 'BIG 10+___'. The 'BIG 10' part of the logo should remain constant in a style of their choosing (like above) for continuity sake with the added number changing to reflect the conference's size du jour and in a font to look as if written in by hand as a reminder that it's only temporary and that you never know who's going to join or leave the conference by the next season ... or, who knows, maybe by the next week.

Then, as the conferences grow, maybe higher math symbols could be used: Yes folks, it's the BIG10x2 Game of the Week

As a Big Ten fan myself, I'm fine with the name and pretty much think of everyone over the 10 as "junior members" anyway. :)

In all seriousness, I think there's too much cache associated with the name. They haven't had 10 members since the early 90s, so why bother changing things now.

I could see Pitt in the Big Ten, but I think Syracuse is a better fit in the ACC. Not that anyone who makes these decisions cares what I think.

I will say that if the ACC can get Notre Dame to commit as a full time football member I'd feel a lot better about its stability.
