Pick GOP VP 2B PDQ

Mets – Willets Point

The news is abuzz that Romney will announce his VP candidate soon, so now is the time to get in your prediction in our quadrennial Pick the Republican VP Candidate Contest. Last time around Farmer Ted correctly picked Sarah Palin in those halcyon days when the rest of us didn't even know who she was.

So many choices for alliteration...Romney/Rubio, Romney/Ryan, Romney/Rice.

I'll take the demon's spawn from my state: Ryan.

Re: Pick GOP VP 2B PDQ

Jindal's right for so many reasons. Looks so false in front of the camera, though.

Ryan would be a great choice for the country, as the debate is going to be centered around how to close the budget gap so he'll be in the center of it anyway. I don't see Romney risking so much on the pick though.

I'm guessing Pawl Enty, for the same reason as JCL. Also, some name recognition and political experience.

I'd been thinking Susana Martinez, but I don't see Romney taking that kind of risk when the election is almost a dead heat. She's more of a "what the hell, we're down by twelve, so let's try a Hail Mary" kind of pick.

Martinez is an interesting pick, but I really think he'll stick with Florida or the South (Haley from SC?).

He's also going to be the keynote speaker at the convention, something you wouldn't think would be the case if he were under consideration for the Veep job.
But yaneverknow.

This is also probably as good a time as any to point out that the VP choice almost never matters on the positive side for the candidate although the wrong pick (Sarah Palin) has been known to hurt now and then.

Re: Pick GOP VP 2B PDQ

It's still in many ways more interesting than the presidential primaries, because candidates are being pursued, rather than pursuing. What makes you a VP candidate is whether you can build coalitions, shatter assumptions, assuage fears, sacrifice your interests for a higher cause. What makes you a presidential candidate is whether you have an astoundingly high self-regard.

I doubt Palin hurt McCain much. She had (and still has) a lot of support from the Republican base who consider McCain a RINO. If anything hurt McCain it was a massive financial collapse under the GOPs watch a month before election day.

Re: Pick GOP VP 2B PDQ

Considering that McCain lost the election quite convincingly, it was far more than the economic collapse. How Palin hurt was that it blunted his best argument: that he had experience and that we shouldn't trust the safety of the country to someone unproven. Then he picked a half-term governor who it seemed had hardly looked at a world map.

Re: Pick GOP VP 2B PDQ

She was a desperate measure in a desperate time, gave the campaign its best two weeks, but ultimately proved a liability. The team was losing hard and had to try something with a potential for a big payoff, despite its risk. She was the political equivalent of pinch-hitting your .220 hitting slugger.

She hit a seventh-inning three-run homer to tie the game, but then they had to send her out to the field and she booted everything hit her way.

Romney's situation certainly isn't that desperate, and he certainly seems far more risk averse.

Re: Pick GOP VP 2B PDQ

I don't think McCain was going to win under almost any circumstance so I'm not trying to claim that the choice of Sarah P is what caused him to lose, only that I think she hurt him more than she helped. Sure she's popular with a portion of the Republican base, but she also turned off at least as many in the middle who really determine outcomes.
Throw in the fact that there's little evidence that VPs sway voters towards their candidate in large enough numbers to turn just about any election and often don't even bring their home state into the win column.

VP choices not picking up their own state for their party would be nothing unusual.

Winning tickets where the VP nominee doesn't win their own state are unusual, however.

Last time was when Nixon won in '68 but did not carry Maryland.

And they have shown up at pro- conservative rallies, too.

Didn't know Ryan was selected until this morning. Probably the healthiest choice we could have had as a country, as much of the debate is going to center around his budget anyhow.

The irony being that Ryan's plan preserves Medicare for anyone born before 1957. Depending on your view of government's role in funding health care, you may think that his plan rocks or you may think that it's the worst idea since the DH rule. But one thing it doesn't do is affect Medicare for people who are currently receiving it.

Re: Pick GOP VP 2B PDQ

The chances that it decides the election are slim, but I don't know if this choice represents a good strategy. The Republican narrative for this election should be "this is a referendum on Obama and his failed economic policies" while this pick instead draws attention to Ryan's own (non-mainstream) policies. I would have gone safe and innocuous, pushed Romney as the economic expert and gone with someone like Sandoval/Portman to try and pull a swing state.
