Josh at Cooperstown

To Cooperstown on Monday to see my grandson Josh and his team, the Olney Pirates, in the Cooperstown Dream Park tournament. These tournaments are held every week durng the summer, 104 teams entered each week. The first half of the week is a full schedule of games for every team, the second half an elimination tournament for the top seeded teams. Twelve-year-olds. With 104 teams, there's going to be a wide difference in quality, but, my daughter tells me, the best teams in this tourney would generally beat the Little League World Series champions.

The Pirates had played and won their first two gameson Sunday. The Monday games were decisive victories...both of them ended in 4-inning mercy forfeits -- 16-2 and 19-3. Josh starred at the plate in both games, and on the basepaths. Once he was the victim of a baserunning mistake behind him -- he stopped at third, and the runner behind him came barreling into third. Josh caught in a rundown, which he danced around long enough to give the other guy a chance to get back to second, then timed his dive perfectly to beat the final throw back to third.

Following the game this morning on their play by play app -- Pirates 10-3. Josh three hits, two runs scored, one RBI (he bats leadoff). I should be able to watch this evening's game on webcam. As of now, they are seeded 10th (the tiebreaker among undefeated teams is fewest runs given up).

Josh is small - half the size of some of the bigger kids -- but a force to be reckoned with, for sure. But this is a bittersweet tournament -- his last baseball game. He's decided to concentrate full time on tennis. He was ranked 120th in the nation for 12-year olds, but he just turned 13 a couple of weeks ago, so he'll have to work at moving back up.

Oh, I also went to the Hall of Fame. That was incredible too. But definitely not the highlight of the trip.
