IGT 8/7/2012 MIA @ NYM: Who ARE These Guys?

Hello, everyone, this is Bob Murphy welcoming you to beautiful Citi Field for the first game of a three-game series as the New York Mets return home to face their division rivals, the Miami Marlins. It's perfect baseball weather tonight, folks. The temperature is a balmy 82 degrees with a light breeze, and there are just a few cumulus clouds up there in the sky as the sun begins to set. It should be a good one, and here with the lineups is my broadcast partner Gary Cohen.

Re: IGT 8/7/2012 MIA @ NYM: Who ARE These Guys?

Thanks Bob. The hot hitting Ruben Tejada leads off at shortstop. Daniel Murphy gets the start at first base with Ike Davis sitting against the lefthander. David Wright bats third, Scott Hairston plays right and bats fourth, and Jason Bay, who is coming off a very tough road trip, bats fifth in left. Ronny Cedeno moves up to the six-hole and plays second, Andres Torres is in center, Josh Thole gets the start with Rob Johnson out with a bruised hand, and pitching and batting ninth, it's Jonathan Niese.

We'll be back with the Marlins lineup after these words from Two Brothers Scrap Metal.

Guys? Guys? Looks like Bob and Gary got on line for one of those new steak sandwiches, so I'll be bringing you the Marlins lineup.

Somebody named Solano is playing second base, Justin Ruggiano, who I spoke with last month, very nice guy, he's batting second and playing center. Jose Reyes bats third, boy if Jerry Manuel were alive today.... Carlos Lee, who is still a Marlin despite their best efforts to get rid of him bats cleanup. Gi-an-car-lo Stanton, boy I love saying that name, he'll be in right field. Austin Kearns - can you believe he's only 32? I was watching him back when I was pledging Delta Kappa Phi, he'll be in left. Nick Green bats seventh and plays third, replacing Hanley Ramirez, but really, who could replace Hanley? John Buck bats eighth and catches, and on the mound, making just his second start of the year, the southpaw Wade LeBlanc.

Guys? Are you back, guys? Well, we'll return with the first pitch, but first a word from Big Bucks Auto

He's got 130 ABs.

If he went 10 for 20 (all homers) in those next 20 ABs, he'd still have a sub-.800 OPS.

In those 130 ABs he has 20 hits. Twenty hits this season.

It's not about his overall numbers, it's about him being out for long enough that you wonder if he needs a "spring training" worth of AB to get his bat going. Timing, reps, etc. He did smack around lefties last year, so it's not that far fetched that he could do that again.

Yeah but if he hit 10 HRs in his next 20 ABs maybe we could trade him instead of releasing him. Either way I can't see this going on for much longer.

LeBlanc's a lefty. I wonder if now that they're home they'll drop him against righties.

It's not far-fetched that Jason Bay could hit 10 homers in his next 20 ABs?

Yes, I suppose if by "not far-fetched" you mean it's "not far-fetched" that I could win the Powerball and buy a suite for the CPF at Citi Field next year.

Not that far fetched that he could have something approaching the .918 OPS he had against lefties last year.

I just read Martino's column and it has instilled in me extended sympathy for Jason. Ill give him four more at bats. All I ask for is one hit. Is that too fetched?

It's All-Star, but it's also stupid. I hate dashes.

And I think All Star makes more sense than far-fetched since fetched doesn't feel like a word.

Made a rare trip out to Citi Field. Didn't get to try the steak sandwich, unfortunately.

Terry Collins' stupid decisions make me at least 50% more frustrated when I witness them in person. Running it down tonight:

1. Not pinch-hitting for Niese with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 5th and the Mets down two.
A defensible move, if you need to get some length out of your starting pitcher. Niese had 82 pitches at the time. The next inning, he throws only 13 more. Then Terry, in his infinite wisdom, removes Niese from the game. So, Terry, if he was only going to throw one more inning...why not pinch hit? Those three extra outs from Niese were that important that you squandered one of the Mets' best scoring opportunities?

2. It continues to baffle me that Bobby Parnell can only pitch one inning. He's effective...and then he's gone.

3. The aforementioned situation where Turner is allowed to bat despite having two excellent left-handed choices on the bench (Valdespin, Baxter).

Righties have a .941 OPS against Bell this season.

Turner has a .712 OPS in his career against righties and .605 against lefties.

Re: IGT 8/7/2012 MIA @ NYM: Who ARE These Guys?

A .712 OPS is not anything to get excited over.

---

Bell's career splits show he is equally effective against lefties and righties. Do you have anything to suggest he's more effective against lefties other than a small sample size in a year where he's pitched badly overall?

Wow. I am now 33.3% more depressed about tonight's loss.

Seriously, I'm not being snarky or sarcastic here.

In the back of my mind, I know that. But when you use that lens to view the game -- and consider that the Mets didn't make those same sort of trades -- it's maddening.

Not sure where Edgy's managerial strategy thread from early season is, but anyhow, with 2 outs and nobody on in the ninth, down two runs, and you have basically committed to PHing your next two batters with the lefties on your bench, don't you go Baxter first, then Jordanny?

Me, I put Mr. 5-walks-in-5-PAs up there first, then go with the guy with the flair for the dramatic HR.

Probably nitpicking Terry here, but I was sure thinking this while watching.
