Cute ESPN intro. This should be a good game. Or torture. It's a tossup.

Heads up running by both Baxter and Wright. And Ike drives in David! 2-0 us.

Hey, Johnson can run a little. Beats the throw for the infield single. Nice.

Re: IGT 8/12/12 - Braves at Mets

I know it's an inconvenience for the local crowd but I enjoy when the Mets are on Sunday night. The ESPN announcers stink, but, at least, it's not a WPIX game and the kids are mostly ready for bed come 8 PM.

Meanwhile, the Mets tack another run on here thanks to some timely hitting by the Rube.

Re: IGT 8/12/12 - Braves at Mets

How can they talk about teams going after Bourne in the off season and not include the Mets in that conversation?

Re: IGT 8/12/12 - Braves at Mets

Because, unfortunately, until the Mets show they are willing/able to spend money, everybody is going to assume (rightly) that they aren't.

So what you're saying is there is a chance, however small, that they could surprise me in a good way this off season...

I fail to see how that's rightly, unless there's an agenda. You can certainly question if the Mets will spend, but they need an outfield and Bourn is avail. At the very least a "the Mets need an OF too" without mentioning finances.

Re: IGT 8/12/12 - Braves at Mets

Edgin getting seriously squeezed and bases are loaded.

Technically a save situation, and so Terry goes to Frank Francisco, because it's the law.

Yeah, and also because Edgin retired just 2 of the 5 batters he faced.

And please re-read the "squeezed" part. Come on.

Francisco, pitching terribly, now has the tying run on third.

Yes he was. That's not an excuse but a reality confronting a manager. If you feel different, that's fine, but spare me the "Yeah, and..." sarcasm. I didn't walk anybody and neither did you.

Edgin threw 20 pitches and hit the strike zone (or got a swing) 9 times. In between getting two guys out (FO + K) he walked a guy on 4 pitches, walked a guy on 5 pitches, and missed the zone by 2-1/2 feet when his 0-1 pitch drilled Freddie Freeman up under the back of his neck.

Even if you're arguing that that S/B ratio should have been - what, 11/9 rather than 9/11? - do you really think there was no justification in removing him and would have left him in to face, in all probability, RH-swinging PH David Ross (.273/.360/.473 -- and .306/.385/.510 vs LHP) with the bases loaded and that Terry did so only because the Closer Alarm Bell in his head went off?

Re: IGT 8/12/12 - Braves at Mets

I think, I think, I think.

I think there were at least two guys I'd prefer before Francisco, and three counting Edgin. They could have been up earlier and been brought into a stabler situation. Francisco needs demotion in his status and is hardly an improvement on anything. I'd bring the right guy in when he can help, not the designated closer exactly when the situation becomes a save situation.

I disagree about how many times Edgin hit the strike zone. I disagree with designated closers. I disagree to going to one there even if he is the best pitcher. I think it's demonstrably evident that Francisco missed the strike zone more consistently or decisively than Edgin or anybody. And I disagree that I deserved your sarcasm. But I opened it up with how I criticized the move, so I guess I'll clean my own house.
